Gaming Question (Couldn't find anywhere else)

Sorry if this was posted anywhere else, but I couldn't find the answer. I am looking into buying a MacBook with at least 1GB RAM. As I know the Pro series is much better for gaming, I want to know if a few games will run under the MacBook, as I can't afford even the refurbished Pros. I understand I will have to install XP to get most of these to work, which is what I use now. Here goes:

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (Windows vers)
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast (Windows vers)
Lego Star Wars II
Star Wars Battlefront II
Area 51
Worms 4
Planetside

With the Jedi Knight series, I can shell out the cash for the now increasingly rare mac vesions if I need to. Can anybody give some help on these? I know I will have to make some sacrifices on graphics level for most if not all of them.

Thanks a lot.

i have the lowest end macbook (1.8ghz processor and 512 mb of ram) i can still play call of duty and age of empires 3 at decent settings, i dont know what you guys are all worrying about, if i had 2 gb of ram they would run very smoothly, i get a feeling that my shortage of ram holds back the processor a bit, but maybe thats just me. i aa've also been playing around with crossover and i've found i can play vice city and some other games through that. in conclusion, i dont know what everyone's worrying about, you can play the games, just not on the highest settings.

Just to give you a hint of what I play and how it runs.

Alright, to start it off, I have the Black Macbook C2D with 1gb of ram. I can play Half Life 2, has great graphics, i can play it with full graphics on, its a little low on the fps side but i can deal with it, with medium settins on it runs fine. I have vista on it, I use aero, runs great. This laptop outruns my desktop, its a vaio, not the greatest desktop in the world but it gets the job done. I personally think the Macbook is a good choice for gaming if you dont need the greatest graphics and fastest ever gameplay. Its nice to know that you can take it with you and play it on your lap.

There are some games that run very nice on it, because they do not demand a very powerful computer, yet are very fun online games, like Day of Defeat, and Counterstrike. Im a big fan of Day of Defeat, and ive never had problems with it. There can be a downside to some games though. sometimes even if you set the graphics lower, it still runs slow, one game really comes to mind, Half Life 2 Lost coast. That is a very demanding game, most of my computers cannot play it without going frame by frame. I personally think the Macbook is great for gaming, just as long as the game doesnt go all out with graphics.

I think its a very fast, powerful laptop that gets the job done. If you are talking about some serious gaming, i would recommend what everyone else is, save up some more money and get a mbp. I was really close to getting one for college, but i had to pay some unexpected bills, i just ended up getting the mb. Goodluck with your choice, i hope this helps you out, feel free to email with any questions at ianisyourmaster@gmail.com

i am the kind of guy that loves to push my machines to the limit, i can also recommend some great software for your new little mac if you get it.

Sorry man. I have a CoreDuo MacBook. I've used
BootCamp (the ONLY Windows option for 3D gaming). The
MacBook has an integrated graphics card, which means
it shares memory with the system RAM and cannot be
replaced or upgraded.

Not only do Call of Duty 2 and Battlefield 2 require
128 MB of video RAM, but they also require DEDICATED
graphics cards, like those found in the iMac and
MacBook Pro. Thus, you will NOT be able to run these
games, even in Windows.

The prices of refurbished MacBook Pros are falling,
but they still have yet to match the hardware value
of comparable Windows laptops. Being on a budget, it
is an unwise decision to buy a laptop for gaming, but
if you must, you had best go with a PC laptop.

Prior to July 2006, I was all Windows, and an avid
gamer. Then I made up my mind and quit gaming (High
School was getting pretty time consuming). Since
then, I'll treat myself to a game of Halo or Call of
Duty while in Boot Camp. They run beautifully, and
much better than my PC with a dedicated graphics card
(128 MB nVidia GeForce 5200). I'm talking about all
settings maximized and at 1280x800 resolution

Speaking of PCs, my personal preference for any PC-
whether desktop or laptop- is made by Dell. They are
a Apple of Windows to me. A great reviewed gaming
laptop is the Dell Inspiron E1505. Add a dedicated
256MB ATI Graphics card ($99) to the $999 model and
you've got a great, affordable gaming laptop for less
than the 2.0 GHz MacBook. In fact, with a $99 screen
resolution upgrade, you've got enough to challenge
the MacBook Pro in regards to gaming performance.
Windows may suck, but when you're playing a game it
doesn't really matter. The Dedicated GPU more than
makes up for the Dell's slower processor.

PS: Differences between CD and C2D MacBook:

Fast processor (duh)- faster than most PC laptops
Faster DVD burner, now capable of Dual Layer
802.11n Wireless Chipset
MUCH CHEAPER (argh!!!)
am I missing something?

As you can see, the MacBook is an excellent deal for
anything but hardcore gaming. For something like Halo
and Call of Duty in BootCamp, its still a steal,
however...

My advice may not matter to you, but I'd suggest that
you get a Windows Laptop for your hardcore (CoD2,
BF2) gaming- or just see that the hi-end gaming world
is not very nice to those of us without a lot of cash
(and get a Mac!)

CoreDuo (White) Mac OS X (10.4.8) 2.0

Just for you info, Call of duty 2 works very well on my macbook core duo on normal settings.
If you have a look on apple's website about the vram on a macbook you will find that if a programe needs more vram to run better it will automatically. ie. if you run a game that needs 128mb of vram then it will get it, right upto 224mb.
I have tried many games on my macbook and they play very well. Of course some better than others but that is like any computer and of course the game.

I was actually wondering the same thing, I will be buying the cheapest mac book and upgrading it to 2 gigs of ram. I'm looking to play counterstrike and I'm assuming I will need to use boot camp. Now the question I have with using boot camp is, how to get a copy of windows xp. I have plenty of the installation disks but will I need a new Key Code? Thanks and sorry for hijacking!

I have a brand new macbook with 2gb of ram. I am however not using bootcamp and in fact using parallels 3.0. I have old pc games that i did not want to rebuy for mac. Halo pc would not work through XP, however a game that uses less graphics like roller coaster tycoon did work no problem. What kind of graphics chip does my computer have? Are there any windows games that i can play smoothly through parallels 3.0. (Like Knights of the old republic or any of the other star wars games for pc? Y wont halo work?

uhmm About Battle Field 2 and Need For Speed Carbon no matter how much RAM you've got there and Processor Speed you have still you can't play this games because they require atleast Shader Model 3.0 Technology, inside this technology is Pixel Shaders and Vertex Shader if your GPU doesn't have these you won't able to play those games Since Mac Book has a GMA950 GPU on it I think it could run NFS Most Wanted according only to my game files it should run I haven't tested it because I don't have a Mac yet but if your main reason is only playing games you should build a desktop pc that can run most of the games in the Market and I want to break the Myth that if you have a Core2 Duo Proc. and a 2gb of mem. you don't have the Ultimate Computer in your life check out forums for gaming and not business machines here. Because Laptops are only for business except customized one's and Desktop's are the universal machines but not versatiles one's just remember it that way in buying computers you should sacrifice a factor(s) not all things will be included in just 1 package.
