Ipad Pro shuts off while charging and requires a hard reset to turn on

Hello,

I got my iPad Wednesday, spent the evening getting it all setup. Restored from back up, ensured everything was there, wiped my iPad air 2 (sold it), deleted it's back up and went on with my normal routine.

At night it was down to 40% so I charged it and went to bed. When I woke up it was "dead". It wouldn't wake up. I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to come to life. Worked on it for a couple of hours and had to run an errand. Plugged it back in as I was going to need a full charge later that day. Came back to it, same thing. Dead. I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to turn on.

Used it more, then last night plugged it in and this morning, same thing. I am thinking that there is an issue with this iPad.

I am now restoring it, since that it what online support recommended I try. Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Thanks.

My ipad pro did the same after I swapped a bad charger out the box. Put on charger about 10:30pm and went to grab it next morning with black screen. Did a hard reset and immediately went to battery usage and notice that the battery usage and standby info was blank after it had charged all night. Let it sit from time I went to work at 2pm until 10pm and ipad still 100% and still battery and standby info is blank. What my theory is that it is either the battery, charging ic, or firmware in which how the charging ic is controlled. Seems like once the ipad gets 100% instead of stopping the charge, it is powering down the ipad pro. Personally I think it's a software and hardware issue. I plan in going by apple to see the version of ios they are running on the demo units because there is no way they haven't experienced this issue considering the ipad are alw a ys plugged in.. But at the same time if it's 100% when it is already powered on it would drop below 100% therefore never powering down. With siri off the issue is definitely there. Going to try my 10 watt charger with siri off and see what happens. Also check your battery usage to see if it records hrs and minutes and not blank. I will post back my findings on a 10 watt charger tomorrow. I will then conduct the same test with siri on and both chargers. Considering loosing sales I could see why Apple pushed this product and seeING that 9.2 was right in the mix afterwords to find a fix. Apple definitely knew of issue to some aspect but due to shareholders demands wanted to push it out anyway. All about money and not about the consumer. Invested want to see profits and I am sure they agreed but due to this forum and many more, I am sure sales will decline and they will learn a valuable lesson once money is lost. If not fixed I could see apple dropping the price or doing what they did with the iPad 3. I'm not worried because I bought applecare so I have time on my side

Also the reset isn't painful and I can live with it till it is fixed. 32 ipad pro gold

This fault appears to be widespread with the iPad pro. No software fix, if it can be resolved that way, and no rest assured we are working on it from Apple, not even an acknowledgement that I can see as of yet. If they dont wake up soon, I am off to my local Apple Store and do it the old fashioned way, Go in nice and early on a Saturday (being this close to xmas is a bonus) I won't leave without a full refund or a replacement for which is fit for purpose and is without fault. Best of luck little people 🙂

I have the same issue + one more. Before charging iPad Pro for 6 hours, the battery indicator was at 57%. When I unplugged the charging cable, the iPad was dead, so I had to hard reset and came back to life with a LINE going across the screen and the battery indicator only showed 87% charged. The dark display line was very noticeable.

I took it to the Apple store and they did some diagnostics and found nothing wrong. At this time, the line faded but wasn't completely gone but later on the line reappeared. Appler personnel said, this may be the faulty display and recommended to replace it.

I had the same problem, so I called Apple, they arranged for a replacement, and then the replacement did the same thing. Really regret now trading in my iPad Air for this expensive flawed product. When I called Apple Care about the second iPad, the customer service person said that doing a hard restart was not good for the iPad, but that is the recommended method for dealing with this issue. So this is more than just an inconvenience--I could be slowly destroying my iPad every time I charge it to 100 percent.

Update:

128GB Gold WiFi

No Smart Keyboard

Setup as new

Never enabled iCloud backups

  • Turning on Hey Siri only worked for about 3 charges, then it was back to dead Pro.
  • Turning off the iPad Pro before charging has worked for 2 charges so far. Will keep observing.
  • Charging with my iPhone adapter + cable instead of iPad Pro adapter + cable worked for 1 charge so far. No need to turn off. Will keep observing.
