iPhoto crashes after clicking INFO on any picture

Hi,

1. go to the /Applications/iPhoto.app/Contents/Resources folder

2. right mouse click on iPhoto.app > context menue > choose: view paket content >> now the folder Contents is visible > double click on Contents > double click Resources

3. delete the files ' googlemap.html ' and 'googlesearch.html'

>> Maybe the files are in a different folder? - all the others worked with iPhoto 9.4.3 - you have a different version!!

I may be wrong, but I think the defaults for Finder's preferences has "Show all filename extensions" UN-checked. If so, the files in question may indeed be in the Resources folder, but may look like "googlemap" and "googlesearch" (i.e., without extensions). You might want go to Finder-->Preferences-->Advanced, check the option "Show all filename extensions", and look in the iPhoto.app again.

If you are familiar with Terminal commands, you could use 'cd' and 'ls' to see the files in the Resources folder -- that would certainly show the full filename.

If that doesn't explain it, perhaps you unknowingly have two copies of the iPhoto.app on your system? This seems unlikely, though.

Edit: just noticed barbfish II's suggestion:

try searching in other places within iPhoto.app.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I followed your suggestion to "Show all filename extensions" and found googlemap.html and deleted it.

However, there is no googlesearch.html file anywhere in iPhoto.app. With that said, in the Resources folder there is a file named 'localSearch.html' and when I clicked on the file it opened a tab in Safari (the tab stated Google Maps) and four boxes appeared on an otherwise blank screen - see bottom of this post. For less than a second a small map appeared and then vanished. Do you think this is the other file to be deleted?

There was only one other html file in the Resources folder - it was named blank.html. I opened it and saw a blank screen.

You have a different version of iPhoto (v8.1.2) and so this fix (for a specific issue with v9) does not apply. Essentially you have a different problem.

So you need to describe the issue you have, and if possible include the first 150 - 200 lines of the crash report.

This is what has been happening: when editing my photos I have always clicked 'info' and used the Photo Places 'box' to drop a pin on the map. The next step would be to go to the separate description text box below the Places 'box' to add any additional comments. Sometime ago the Photo Places stopped working and after checking these forums I learned of the Apple vs Google Maps issue so stopped using Places but continued to use the description text box to make note of the location the photo was taken. About three weeks ago I was editing some photos and clicked on 'info' to make a note in the text box but when the photo flipped over and I clicked in the description text box iPhoto would either crash or it would freeze and I would see the 'spinning ball'. I kept trying and eventually I was able to write comments in that group of photos. This week I have more photos to edit but now as soon as I click on 'info' iPhoto crashes before the photo flips over. I have tried repeatedly but each attempt results in a crash.

With Places gone I really need that description text box to add comments about the photos!

I just went to iPhoto to click on 'info' so I could get a crash report for you……but it didn't crash! I clicked 'info' on several photos in several Events, the photos flipped over, and I was able to add text to the description box. This is the first time I've gone back into iPhoto since moving the googlemap.html file to the Trash yesterday. Is it possible that deleting that one file solved the problem?

Later today I will continue editing this group of photos and will make an additional post to report if it crashes or if it continues to work.

Adding my thanks to the general consensus, here. After iPhoto repeatedly crashed this evening I was quite worried and looked here first - so glad I did. Thanks for the help and for you clever people who figured out the fix! The iPhoto app is no longer crashing and I'm quite okay with the Places feature disabled.

Frankly, I wish they would make all that fancy crap optional. I don't need it and if someone does they can optional select it rather than digging around finding a solution to something that has suddenly become obsolete. It would make it easier for a lot of us. Take note of those who had to jump though multiple hoops and get no results, wasting their valuable time. It's not a fun game, it's a pain in thy arse.

Apple aren't here, they don't promise to read anything here. That was explained when you signed up to the forum. This problem only exists because you choose to run out-of-date versions of the apps and OS.

Yes, I choose not to update each and every time a new version comes about. I say it again, they should make these options optional and let each and everyone choose to use it or not. I don't know if Apple reads this or not. They might have said they don't but how do you know they don't? Don't believe everything you are told.

is what I wrote. All of these options are optional. I never used Faces or Places. But if they are reading they're hardly likely to be reading posts about apps that went out of date years ago and are no longer developed, now would they? Especially when they have already issued updates that don't have the issue.
