Dark areas on iMacs Display!

I have noticed a small grey degrade on my iMac left bottom corner about a month ago. Recently I noticed the same problem on the top left of the screen, though not at the corner but a few centimeters close to the corner.
Does anyone know what this is? Can I fix it? Do I have to sent it for fixing?
Does anyone else have the same problem?

it should work if you try the following link, choosed
already Italy and italian for you. For the serial
number click on "About this Mac" and then 2x on the
text under Mac OS X.

Hmmm, ok. If it doesnt work, you might visit an italian AASP (Authorized Apple Service Partner) close to your Hometown, or if its to far away, ask him via Phone Call to send in your iMac with UPS or ask him for a UPS Pickup Order.
Thats what i did, because the nearest AASP is in 68 Kilometer distance to my City in Germany.

Same here, I have the same problem with the iMac screen and the support page drop down menu. 🙂

I guess my only option is to call Apple Support. -_-

Hello

My iMac returned from repair yesterday afternoon
(after 11 days), the AASP replaced the Display. Had
luck, the new Display is 100% errorfree, no
pixelerrors, all parts of the screen have the same
good brightness, no problems with black backgrounds,
black is really black, im a very happy Mac User
again. 🙂

Well i was happy for a few days, but only 12 days later was a dark area visible again (left side bottom in the corner) and on day 14 after repair was a very small dark area in the upper right corner visible.
Both are weakly visibly, especial the one in the upper right corner. Assume they will increase again, i have to wait and see.

Do you know the part number for the Screen they
replaced? I busted my screen or my 5 yr old Grandson
did.. Need to replace it, but don't want to pay $650
for screen and $200 labor.. Ebay, but need the part
number.

WWW search showed a few results in the US, but the price isnt much lower.

The lowest was at:
http://www.applepalace.com/newsite/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=7260

I think its a risk to replace it self without experience and instructions.

I have this problem since I bought the iMac 20" Core
Due. First time I reported this incident and I got a
replacement. I have the same problem after I have
the replacement for about 3 months. Unfortuneately,
Apple only arrange the replacement of LCD only and
the LCD parts are out of stock right now with no idea
when it will be available. Shame on Apple to
deliever this poor "Q" iMac.

Hello

As i wrote, a local AASP replaced my Display and only a short time later had the new Display also the dark areas (stains). I send my iMac to the AASP for another repair this week.
How was it with yours, was it ok?

I have the same problem, my computer is 6 months. I contacted Apple to request assistance and they told me to bring the computer to the nearest AASP, which is more that 100KM far from where I live. This is a shame, I have to pay to contact Apple (here in Italy we pay for the telephone call, and I have to pay (gasoline, time etc) to bring the computer to the AASP on my own.

No more apples for me.

Hi,

my iMac began displaying the same dark areas about 4 months after I purchased it. After a lot of searching, the cause is now obvious. A user from Spain with the same problem took his iMac apart to investigate and discovered that these dark areas are actually on a layer of reflective material which is directly behind the display. This material seems to tarnish in certain spots due to heat. These stains then become visible on the display. This is also why many people who had their displays exchanged reported a return of these dark areas after a while. It is possible to remove the stains, however, that requires taking out the entire display and disassembling it, which of course void your warranty.

I wonder how many apple owners experience the same issues with their displays?!

This is not what i would expect from a 1600Euros piece of hardware! I was left quite bitter after, and I am beginning to doubt myself about ever buying another apple computer.

Do you know what should be done in order to avoid, or postpone these 'meltdowns' ? (For example, does the extensive use of the built in speakers have any impact on this issue?)

I know of 13 other iMac owners with the same problem. It seems to affect both Core Duo and Core2 Duo models.
These dark areas appear mostly in the lower and upper left corners of the display. Some users also observed them in the area of the internal cd/dvd writer after extensive use of the writer, but they seem to be most common in the lower left corner. These seem to be the "hot spots" (Although I don't really see why the lower left corner would be one of them, I believe the only component in that area is a fan). I do not think extensive use of the built in speakers has any effect as they do not produce heat. As to how they can be avoided, it should be possible to use some kind of heat resistant foil to provide some extra insulation, perhaps simple aluminum foil would do the trick. However, I do not really consider this a "solution", you have to take the iMac apart and lose your warranty.
