I am new to Mac - my email has stopped showing the number of unread mails

- I have looked at the settings and all looks fine but I re boot the computer it works for a few minutes and then stops showing the unread number?

When it clears the unread number it also clears my iPhone

MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11)

Hi Linc

I did confess at the start of this exchange that I was new to Mac and its op system and I now confess that I cannot find where and how do do the Guests tests in your last message however- reading it I gathered the detail that you wanted to test a new account - what I did was create another IMAP account on my mail server this I did and sent some test messages from it and picked them up on my windows PC and my Mac Book Air - what I have found is that teast and normal messages sent to my original and only IMAP account loose the unread marker after a short time sitting in the inbox however the test messages sent to the new IMAP account have had the unread marker siting there for an hour or more I have closed mail and re opened it - I have jumped between the accounts and the Inbox and the marker stays showing on the new account - I also have unread marker showing on the spam and junk mail folders.

Could the answer be to simply delete my original IMAP account from my Mac and then just reinstate it?

Best regards

Dick

Morning Linc

I appreciate your patience!

OK

I carried out the Guest and Safe Mode tests

Set up Guest Mode as instructed

Sent test email to it and the unread marker showed for a while but eventually (maybe 5 mins) disappeared

All my old mail came into the account which was read and unread but no markers showed for the unread items

I then checked my iPhone which was showing unread markers but as soon as I started using that the unread markers disappeared

Safe mode test was around the same result - trial mails showed the unread marker for a while but when left for a short time they cleared down.

???

I said yesterday should I delete my main account and re renter it - to test this idea I created a new IMAP account and loaded that onto the Mac in my normal log in mode - I did that yesterday and the test mail that I sent to it still show the unread marker even with all the trials I have conducted which leads me to want to try deleting my main account and re entering however I cannot find "delete account" in any menu I can find the "de activate" check are but not delete?

Await your kind thoughts

Well I have done it all including deleting the account and reinstating it but I still have the marker issue - at a loss!!!

The new account I created is still retaining the unread marker on the 5 emails I sent to it??

I am glad my windows PC is still running and showing me which emails are unread.

Thanks so much for your efforts - just wonder if it is as a result of downloading El Capitain last week - can it be forced to re download might be worth a try?

Yes thats correct I have a lap top and desk top windows PC's and both of them have the same account that I am running on the Mac and it is only my iPhone Ipad and Mac that are affected by the disappearing marker - windows still retains them as unread?

Does that give you a clue as I am way past stumped - should I take it to the Apple store?

Hi Linc

I thought the problem had resolved itself as when i awoke today there were some 20 unread emails on my ipad iphone and my Mac so I thought I would see what happened.

I sent an email from my iphone to a contact (not a reply to theirs just a fresh email) and as soon as I did that the unreadmarker disappeared from all 3 machines?

Unread flag still persists on the Windows PC - is this any more help - not sure when I can get to an Apple store

Dick
