Can't boot into windows after resizing partitions

I tried to resize my bootcamp and mac partitions recently

I cannot boot into windows now

Get an error about missing MBR

Do you think you could help me here?

I read about using GPT fdisk on another thread

These are the results I got from it

Wanted to check before doing anything

exit code 8 is back ..... unfortunately.

so I will reinstall OS 10, however i'd like some advice on how i should go about it without impacting my windows installation or my dual boot status ?

use recovery ? if someone can give me some details on what to expect or what to look out for that would be great. i've never done a reinstall of OS 10 before.

Feb 5, 2016 10:48 PM in response to Loner T

ok, just got done with the reinstall and all my files/apps and settings were intact after the reinstall.

i didn't see where i could choose to do a clean install, maybe i missed it. but maybe this reinstall that was done might have fixed any corrupted kext or other OS files .... i will periodically check diskutil to see if exit code 8 comes back.

i checked the GPT and everything appears to be exactly the way it was before, no errors or mismatches.

so everything seems fine in OS 10, i will reboot several times into windows to check that also.

Hi,

Hopefully someone can help with with an issue I am having.

I found an old Apple discussion on how to resize a bootcamp partition, by reducing the size of the OS X partition and then using a Windows based tool to then expand the Bootcamp partition. Big mistake! I ended up with the same problem as this thread's creator, with my Windows partition no longer being bootable.

I followed the steps outlined by Loner T, which worked perfectly! Thanks so much!

I then went into Windows and used the Mini Partition Tool to extend the Windows partition into the unallocated partition which worked fine in Windows.

However when I boot back into OS X and open disk utility I can now see 3 separate partitions.. 1) Mac HD; 2) Untitled (the one I created) 3) Windows HD (Bootcamp). So OS X is not recognising that I have extended the Windows HD partition into the Untitled one.

Is there a way to fix this without ruining the now expanded Windows partition? Windows doesn't seem to see two separate partitions, only in OS X.

Thanks in advance!

Do not use any tool to manipulate partitions further, other you will lose information and files. Please post the output of the following OS X Terminal commands.

diskutil list

diskutil cs list

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

The "sudo" commands will prompt for your password, and it will not be echoed back. You may also see a warning about improper use of "sudo" and potential data loss due to "abuse" of the command.

i'm not familiar with how Time Machine actually works and what it backs-up. is it similar to Windows restore ?

I like using clonezilla because it's incredibly easy and painless to save and restore entire disk images. only downside for me to using clonezilla is that i have to attach my optical drive to run it from CD while i have connected a USB hdd to save the image onto. it's just cumbersome to do that, so I don't do it often. I need to figure out how to run clonezilla from a flash drive.

but it has saved my machines in the past and saved me from the headache of reinstalls and setups that sometimes took hours ...

Feb 6, 2016 5:55 AM in response to zero7404

bad news .... AGAIN.

file exit code 8 reappeared. this just happened after i boot into Windows 10, checked my email and used my browser, then rebooted back into OS 10.

what might be causing this ? I also have paragon HFS+ driver for Windows, which I use to read/write to the HFS+ partition. The reason why I have this is because I use firefox and thunderbird, and I have my profiles stored on the Macintosh HD partition. I have my windows firefox and thunderbird set to read directly from the profiles on the Macintosh HD partition ....

I suppose that I can put my profiles on my NAS drive .... in my experience i had lagging and slow performance in mozilla apps when i loaded them from the NAS. but i was able to use the same profile from windows or mac os.

Loner T do you think this might be causing this issue ?

It possibly can. It may be difficult to identify if it has already happened.

Can I suggest creating a USB Flash drive/SD Card with a FAT32 file system and using it for you Profiles? I have seen minor to major issues with third-party file system drivers which do not close open files, directories or devices and cause havoc with inodes and directories.

Feb 6, 2016 7:04 AM in response to Loner T

im going to try to keep away from using firefox and thunderbird in windows for a few days to see if the issue disappears. if so, that could be a cause ...

perhaps a FAT32 or extFAT partition added to my computer in order to share data without corruption might work ? i dont know if these fs's will work seamlessly with both OS's ? if it is possible i need to figure out how to (1) shrink my windows partition by a few GB and (2) add the partition sucessfully ...

Feb 6, 2016 3:21 PM in response to Loner T

i've been looking for ways to try and make my browser and email profiles shared between windows and mac, but even if i tried going back to putting the profiles on the NAS, i've read it's not recommended to let multiple sessions on different computers share the same profile .... even if those computers have the same OS, same version of browser/mail client and even if they are not simultaneously accessing the profiles.

so perhaps the better option for me is to keep the profile for access on one OS only and use it only there. With firefox, there is the sync feature, which comes in handy to sync various sessions on different devices .... but for thunderbird i will leave it on mac OS, because it's more important to have my email rather than risk corrupting the profile ....

i removed the HFS+ driver from windows. so let's see how that goes over the next few days of dual-booting.

given this, i do have my itunes library on my NAS and I do access it from both windows and mac OS. should i be concerned ? the media folder pointer in both OS's is the same location on the NAS.

so i guess i do not need to add a sharing partition to the macbook's hdd because i have the NAS, which both OS's can easily access.

But now back to my desire to redistribute space between os 10 and windows .... i have my doubts about doing it safely with Camptune ....

i read that disk utility can be used to shrink the macintosh HD partition, but I would not be able to increase it with disk utility ? would i be able to shrink my windows partition within windows first - then go into os 10 and try to claim that space with disk utility ?

or just use camptune ?
