I recently updated to El Capitan yesterday and had problems with my safari ever since. Every time I type anything on safari's address bar, nothing shows up and it's very inconvenient as I use it to do google searches and visit websites.

Same problem here 9.0.3 since this morning
I unchecked all checkboxes, closed and restarted Safari and then afterwards without re-enabling them it is working...

I just started to experience the same issue not being able to type anything into the address bar.
This is what helped in my case.
- Go to the menu bar and openSafari --> Preferences --> Search tab
- Disable / uncheck Safari Suggestions (should be the 2nd checkbox)
- Restart Safari.
Let's hope they will fix it soon.
Indeed, suggestion of flyingA did the trick. Hope this annoying thing is fixed soon.
Same thing fixed me - Uncheck 'Include Safari Suggestions' - many thanks I was pulling my hair out and didn't want to trash Safaris plist and lose everything!

Still it's a weird bug. You uncheck things that don't work when they are checken and when they are unchecked, they function like they are checked. Hope Apple will solve this issue quickly!

Same here … turning off Safari suggestions worked also for me.
The problem is also on iOS if you tap the address bar. In my case safari crashed every single time. Switching off the Safari suggestions works on iOS as well.

I have the same issue, but in addition Safari on my iPhone has become unusable. I can select from favourites or reading list, but the second I tap the address bar the app crashes. Was working fine until I saw the issue on my Mac, then since then even after unticking the options as described above to dodge the Mac issue my phone is still unusable. Several restarts on each device.
