iMovie 10.1 : Can't Delete Older Project

I have an older "trailer" project from 2012 that I'm unable to delete which I believe was corrupt to begin with after upgrading to the most current version of iMovie. I deleted all the media from the project but the outline | storyboard | shot list seem to be intact and can't be edited. Do I need to re-import the media and place in the outline in order to delete? I appreciate any help.

I've solved this in iMovie 10.1.5

I had this issue where the projects were showing as grey boxes which I could not delete. I opened a Finder window, went to my users/<username>/movies folder, right clicked on iMovie library and selected "show package contents".

In here I could see folders for the offending projects, so I deleted them.

When I restarted iMovie, it warned my me library was damaged, and I clicked on "repair" (not continue!).

Hey presto - undeleteable projects gone.

My existing projects were unharmed.

Hope this helps!

I've had the same problem: unable to delete iMovie projects (in iMovie 10.1.4) that were updated from a previous version. The only solution I've found to fix this problem is ugly, but it repeatedly works for me. Please don't try it if you don't feel comfortable with it; you could mess up your movie library if you delete the wrong thing. That said, it's pretty straight forward:

  1. Close and back up (or duplicate) your iMovie library, just in case!!
  2. Right click on the iMovie Library and select Show Package Contents
  3. Go to the Updated Project Media folder
  4. Delete the folder of the project you want to remove.
  5. Reopen iMovie. You will get a warning message: The Library “iMovie Library” is damaged. (may be different if your library has a different name). Click "Repair"
  6. After a few moments, the library will reload and you'll get the same warning: The Library “iMovie Library” is damaged. This time, Click "Continue". The unwanted project will be gone, but you're not done yet. Other projects will look blank until the next step.
  7. Close and re-open iMovie. Everything should be ok now.

Like I said, this is an ugly, ugly solution but it's worked for me multiple times when nothing else has. I'd be happy to see a real solution that doesn't require going into the package. Apple...?

I'm not sure why this worked for me, but I've been tearing my hair out trying to solve this issue too.

By chance, I've found a solution for myself.

1. At the very top of iMovie, select 'Media'.

User uploaded file

2. On the left side of the window, select 'iMovie Library'

User uploaded file

3. There should be a list of your different projects and the media you used for it. Go to the project that you want to get rid of and delete the media contents (Command + Delete). This should get rid of the project from that list.

4. Return to 'Projects' and find the project you want to delete.

5. Select that project and delete the contents inside, leaving it completely blank.

User uploaded file

6. You should be able to delete it now.

I have no idea if it'll work for others, but for some reason it's working for me. Hope it helps.
