Hi There,
I am trying to install OS X on a used MacBook pro.
Went through informative post below about setting up used Macbook
.....and had a question on this :
" If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. "
How do you get an Apple ID ?
When I setup my ipad, my iPad Apple ID was created during the setup > xyz at icloud. com
My understanding so far is that if an used MB is bought , for setting up a new Apple ID following link needs to be used -
https://appleid.apple.com/account
It says " Enter your primary email address as your Apple ID. This will be used as the contact email address for your account."
So does this mean that the new Apple ID for MB will be my gmail ID eg. 'johndo at gmail. com'
and not a new 'abc at icloud. com' ?
My apologies for so many questions , little confused ..with half knowledge😮
Thank you .
Hey guys
So I tried to install OS X using newly created iCloud apple id ( also added credit card information), but still get 'this Apple ID has not been used wi App Store ' error.
When I tried to use my ipad Apple ID I get ' this item is temporarily not available '
Is Apple updating its system or something, Any thoughts ?
thanks

Did he use YOUR Apple-ID to do the download?
- No ( It was a she though 🙂)
Do you now have El Capitan showing on your "Purchases" page in the Mac App Store?
- NO
If you do not, you may want to "Buy" it again (still on sale for $0).
Then make a Backup copy -OR- create an Installer thumb drive.
- Yes, do see it . Thanks for the tip !
To avoid having to return to the genius Bar every time Mac OS X gets clobbered, you want to have El Capitan showing on your "Purchases" page in the Mac App Store. "Purchases" is accessed by clicking on the "Purchases" heading at the top. It will look something like this -- but yours will have different items on it:

You own the MBPro now - use your own Apple ID - I think there is some limit to the number of devices one can authorize per Apple ID though (5?) - Oh look! I guessed right!

Sep 24, 2015 - You can have 10 devices (a maximum of 5 computers) associated with your Apple ID and iTunes at one time. Computers and devices can be associated with a different Apple ID once every 90 days. Each computer must also be authorized using the same Apple ID. You don't need to authorize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Houston, we have a problem...
That Mac probably shipped with 10.6.6. It might have shipped with 10.7. AND it cannot boot from the last "full retail" DVD (which contains 10.6.3.)
If you cannot get it to re-load 10.7, you may have to call AppleCare and ask them to send you a copy of the original Mac OS X (10.6.6) about US$20. Or ask the seller if they have the original gray discs.
| MacBook Pro | Date introduced | Original OS X included | Later OS X included | OS X Build(s) |
| MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011) | Feb 2011 | 10.6.6 | 10.6.7,10.7, 10.7.2 | 10J3210, 10J3331a, 10J4139, 11A511a, 11C74 |
| MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011) | Feb 2011 | 10.6.6 | 10.6.7,10.7, 10.7.2 | 10J3210, 10J3331a, 10J4139, 11A511a, 11C74 |
| MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2011) | Feb 2011 | 10.6.6 | 10.6.7,10.7, 10.7.2 | 10J3210, 10J3331a, 10J4139, 11A511a, 11C74 |
Or maybe you can get the guys at the genius Bar to re-load something on it to get you going. You need at least 10.6.6, which can be updated to 10.6.8, where the Mac App Store appears and you can download properly from there.
Grant is referring to these features about 'resetting' & 'restoring' (others?)

an Apple-ID identifies YOU to Apple.
If you bought a used MacBook, you have the right to re-load the ORIGINAL Mac OS X it shipped with, and no other. No Apple-ID is required, just a real Mac.
If you want a different version, you can "buy" it from the Mac App Store using YOUR Apple-ID. Most are US$20 or free.
If you like, post the specs for that Mac and Readers can tell you what Mac OS X it shipped with.
You already have an Apple ID for your iPad - it is best to use the same one for all things that have to do with the app store as all your purchases and downloads are tied to your Apple ID. So, you can simply use that one; if the seller actually wiped the drive, then this should work. However, if you do not wish to use that one, you can easily create another of your choice - I know people who maintain up to 10 IDs, each one for a separate account; I'd find that much too confusing.
The limits mentioned above have nothing to do with downloading an OS - the first link merely has to do with how many devices can be used to play music and the second one refers to iTunes content (downloaded/purchased music, movies, etc).
Unfortunately, that kb article omits some extremely important information and I've forwarded the concern to Apple as the article is partially in violation of the licensing agreement. My concern is mainly that it should not referred to unless the missing information is supplied as well.
As for Yosemite, neither it nor Mavericks are available any longer. Each was withdrawn the day its successor was introduced.
I am sorry to be splitting hairs over this, but...
I still have Mavericks and Yosemite available to me and they show on my "Purchases" page.
I think the correct statement is "Mavericks and Yosemite are not available for purchase as new". You can RE-download them, but only if you bought them previously.
