Iphone 5 battery swelling, opening the phone

My wifes iPhone 5 was working like new when we recognised the front cover was lifting up for no reason. After searching a bit online we found the battery is swelling and might possibly explode one day. We still have older iPhomes, even the original 1st generation with not problems (other than the lower capacity). I think this is not normal and Apple should replace the battery even the serial number is not in the range for the iPhone 5 battery program. Do you know whom to contact ? We dont have an Apple store here, just retailers.User uploaded file

UPDATE:

After I was flatly rejected for a free iPhone 5 battery replacement at the Vancouver Apple Store, I went to the Burnaby Apple Store. Armed with this article (http://www.techradar.com/us/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/you-ve-n ow-got-until-january-2016-to-replace-you…) I talked to one of the Apple Geniuses. He readily agreed that my iPhone 5 qualified for a free replacement. Not only that, he said that Apple doesn't replace only the battery after it has bulged the screen. Apple replaced my entire iPhone 5 with a new one, out of the box. This has restored my confidence in Apple's customer service, and that they do stand behind their products.

In summary, I suggest that you click on the link above as it states that this 'out of warranty' extended replacement program will only last till January 2016. Each Apple Store has their own discretion and quotas, so be persistent.
