Windows 10 Boot Camp BCD Missing/Errors

  1. clean upgrade of Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 Pro (no apps, all updates) using Boot Camp Assistant (latest) on El Capitan
  2. Used EFI install option - no issues install went smoothly
  3. Have latest XCode, etc. installed, all OSX updates installed
  4. Didn't install any Windows updates until after Boot Camp drivers installed (disabled Windows Update until those were complete.)
  5. Win 10 install was clean except for Steam and Chrome installed. No other apps.
  6. Installed all available Windows updates
  7. Today installed latest Windows Updates (not sure what they all were, one was Windows Defender definitions, one was Malicious Software Removal tool, and one was a C++ redistributable update)
  8. Machine rebooted to finish - display was 'off' though - didn't have right dimensions, didn't fill screen, lower res than before updates.
  9. Went into display settings to try to set it back to a higher res
  10. Machine crashed; back into Windows 10 and tried to run the NVidia Control Panel
  11. Crashed again into loop of 3 crashes
  12. Now get blue screen immediately after boot saying "Boot Configuration Data ... missing or contains errors":
  13. User uploaded file
  14. When holding down Option at boot no longer see Windows drive either:

User uploaded file

Here's output of diskutil - list (I do have a 3TB backup USB drive attached that I did not have attached during Windows install; however, it's worked fine for a week or more and is not used in/by Windows 10):

User uploaded file

Here's output of fdisk:

User uploaded file

Here's output of sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0:

User uploaded file

When I run diskutil cs list I get, "No CoreStorage logical volume groups found"

Finally, sudo dd if=/dev/rdisk0s4 count=1 2>/dev/null | hexdump -C gives:

User uploaded file

Any help appreciated! Not sure what to do next.

Then the Windows 8.1 logo appears (the white windows logo on the light blue background), followed by a dark blue background with 'Setup is Starting' across the bottom. The system then starts Windows setup.

You cannot use W8.1 to Repair W10. You will need to use BCA to create a W10 installer using a USB and W10 ISO (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/home) .

Ah, I see. I created the thumb drive and did an in-place upgrade after installing all updates for Win 8.1. Whoops.

I think I'm going to just start over so this doesn't happen again. So, to ensure this, I should:

  1. wipe existing partition
  2. use Disk Utility to create a new partition while still in OSX
  3. reboot with thumb drive in place
  4. reinstall windows using EFI option (using same thumb drive I've already used, this worked fine)
  5. on partition screen, select partition created with Disk Utility
  6. format as NTFS
  7. install

Is this correct? What's the difference using BCA to create the Windows partition vs Disk Utility?
