What do you need to do put thoes little icons in your URL.

I'm sure I'm asking an entirely dumb question here, but it's something I haven't figured out. How do I put an icon for my site to be with my URL when someone visits it in a browser. For example there is the little white Apple when on Apple sites, a G for Google, and so forth.

Thanks

I could really use some help on this one.

I've done everything, and this still isn't working.

I created a favicon (.ico) image through a favicon website directly from a picture. It sized it up all pretty like for me. I then followed the directions *to the letter* from the link listed above. They were very intuitive, and got me using MassReplaceIt for the first time.

I'm not sure where I went wrong, though, or if there is some step that is missing from the instructions (I also tried out instructions from other websites, which were, more or less, the same).

So, a step by step of what I did:

1. Created a favicon from an image at http://www.chami.com/html-kit/services/favicon/
2. Placed the icons (both of them, the .ico and the .png - as some folks mentioned that .ico doesn't work with safari) in my online folder (idisk->Web->Sites->iWeb It is in the iWeb folder along with my index.html, and the master folder that contains all of my web pages.
3. I used MassReplaceIt to place the new code lines into the html files of the web pages. I tried copying and pasting the ones provided by Will Englefield (with my link info replacing his); typing them out by hand; copying the format that Michael Wong of Rowan-Cottage uses on his pages; placing the code in various spots between the <head>..... <head> area; using code formats suggested by other outside sources on the web; I tried using both .png and .ico formats at the same time, singly, etc. Nothing.

Nothing worked. No matter where I put the code, what form of code I put in, it never worked on my webpage. I emptied my cache, I reset safari, i checked the website on a pc, I refreshed, I refreshed, I refreshed. Nothing.

I do mask my web.mac.com/merchandise1 address to merchandiseonline.org But, it seems that rowan-cottage masks his, too. I checked my forwarding domain provider (directNIC) and found nothing on their site to suggest any interruption from them. I don't see why it would, as this is no different from putting an HTML box of some type on a page.

What am I missing? I don't need to publish, do I? That seems to be completely unrelated.

Ideas?

Thanks a bunch,
James

Hi there,

If you have the page bookmarked, delete bookmark, empty cache, close browser and re-open, that might help. Most favicons will not display if the site has been previously bookmarked...

FYI - Graphic Converter allows you to save as .ico , it's a free download and almost free to use and a decent image editing software...

Thanks to everyone for the quick replies. I seem to be making a little progress. I have placed the icon in my iWeb folder. It sits atop my index.html and my "merchandise" folder. When I head to web.mac.com/merchandise1/iWeb/favicon.ico, I don't get a nice page with my icon on it, but a "404 not found" AND my Preview application loads up and shows me the icon.

So, obviously it's detecting it to some degree. I've put <link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="http://web.mac.com/merchandise1/iWeb/favicon.ico"/> into both my index.html and my homepage html, but... it's still not working.

Suggestions?

Hi again,

I took a look at your icon here: http://web.mac.com/merchandise1/iWeb/favicon.ico - I donwloaded and it is 32 x 32 pixels, a favicon is always 16x16 pixels... try sizing down 16 x 16 pixels and saving 256 colors. I tried to actually look at this address: http://web.mac.com/merchandise1/iWeb/favicon.ico - and it gave me a dialog box, which isn't normal. I actually had to download to see the icon.

I don't use iWeb, so I can't advise as to why I got the dialog box. But if you go to here: http://artundergroundstudio.com/favicon.ico you should actually see the favicon in yor browser.

Try downsizing first, upload, delete bookmark and try again, they are tricky, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't

Yes, that happened to me, too. When i go to http://web.mac.com/merchandise1/iWeb/favicon.ico, it downloads the icon to my desktop and opens up my picture preview applicaton.

I resized it to 16x16, and replaced the old .ico file, and i'm still getting the same results.

I'm continually trying new methods to get this to work, but I'm still not having any luck. I wish I wasn't so stubborn, as it's a nice day outside.

Marchandise DUDE!

I just looked up your website and YES, it does work in my browser Firefox using an iMac G5... so you do have it working, you just don't see it on your end, hopefully not yet but sooner or later...

http://web.mac.com/merchandise1/iWeb/Merchandise/HOME.html

Try clearing your cache, DELETE the bookmark, history, history in bar etc etc etc but it does work, nice favicon... Rick

BTW - I can only get it on the HOME.html page and not the other links... but not on Safari 😟

MARCHendise? lol

yup, i see it on my pc's browser (IE), but not on my mac's (safari). And I only put the code on my hope page to test it out before i started doing massreplaceit work. So, that's why you only saw it there. 🙂

Some folks mentioned that .ico's don't work with safari. I wonder if I should put a .png in the sites folder as well, for sake of safari. Some people suggested that on other sites, but I cound never get that to work, either.

Have you heard anything about the .png option? That's odd, though, because when I look at other sites in safari, the icon comes up; and if i look at their source code, there is no .png.

Mar 22, 2007 11:58 AM in response to Merchandise

I no nothing about PNG's

My sites all have favicons and they all seem to work on every browser out there including Safari. You might have to surf your site a few times before it adds the favicon.

This is the actual link I use on one of my pages: <link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="favicon.ico" > this site has @ 400 pages and I did not add them to any other page... technically speaking, you should not need to add any link as most browsers will look for /favicon.ico automatically and when found will cache this ico for future use - I have done w/o the link on almost every site I work on and they do show up...

Good luck, Rick

do you put that link on any page in particular? or a specific page?

one more thing... i noticed that when i go to merchandiseonline.org (the cloaked domain), the icon doesn't show up. It only shows when I go to web.mac.com.merchandise1

I've been analyzing other people's pages without much luck in discerning what the difference between mine and their's is.

For example, mwong here on the forums has a site, and has a nice icon showing up on his masked domain name. When you view his source code, there is nothing out of the ordinary about it. I, for the life of me, can't figure out why that one works, and mine doesn't.

Just used that link the first time I tried favicons...

http://artbabyart.com/ - has that link on index page but not on any other page on this site, this site is over 400+ pages
http://artundergroundstudio.com - no link anywhere
http://http://roscovanheusen.com/mypics/v/artunderground/ - no link anywhere

The common factor is just upload favicon.ico (this is the SPECIFIC name of file browsers look for) in root directory (or folder that contains all you pages and other folders) and within a few minutes to a couple of frustrating days they all worked.

Merchandise,
I just went through the process listed in this thread, used massreplaceit as discussed and used a png as well as a ico. Initially the favicon didn't come up in Safari, I was getting the default Safari blue ball. The favicon did work in firefox. What I did to get it to work in Safari was this: after each page loaded without the new favicon, I added a "?" at the end of the html in the address bar and hit the return button. The new favicon then appeared. I did this for each page. This was suggested somewhere in these forums if not in this thread. It worked for me.

Good luck, David http://web.mac.com/phelpssculpture/iWeb/

I ran across that post myself. I tried that last night, with no luck. I've since removed the code line from my pages, and am testing it out with having the code in my index.html only.

I'm really starting to wonder if it has to do with my forwarded domain address. The icon works on my pc when i type in my actual mac account address, but not when i type in merchandiseonline.org - which is the forwarding address that I use through DirectNIC.

<nearing my wit's end>

Thanks again for all the help so far.
