iPhone dialer 'keypad screen' shows random contact numbers

iPhone dialer 'keypad screen' shows random contact numbers when opened after exiting the app. And these contacts are probably people whom I haven't contacted in the last few months. I've tried restarting [soft/hard] the phone, to no use.

iPhone 5s, iOS 9.2

The same has happened to me. I've tried the fix suggested here so hopefully it will work.

I was wondering whether my phone had been hacked? The person who's name comes up is someone who has quite likely had her phone hacked due to the work she engages in. I was wondering whether by association either government, police or elsewhere were checking out my phone too!

Nope ... Thanks for the reply but it still does not solve my problem.

The random contact comes up in the keypad screen ... I'm unable to take a screenshot as it flashes for a couple of seconds. I've attached a screenshot of my dialer screen and the problematic contact being displayed on the multitasking window insteadUser uploaded file. The last i contacted the phone number displayed was months ago. And since then I've dialed numerous contacts through the keypad screen. But don't know why this contact keeps coming up in the dialer screen 😟

I have exactly the same problem.

The Dialer pad opens showing an apparently "random" number/name which disappears too fast for me to snapshot an image.
However, with the dialer screen open as blank (i.e "random" number/name has disappeared)....
if I then <double click> to show all open windows,

it shows the dialer pad window with blank name/number
but if I then swipe across the open windows to select the iPhone Home Screen, and do:

Option 1. with iPhone Home screen selected
<double-click> it gives me a view of all the open windows again

BUT, this time the "random"number/name is frozen... [which allowed me to take the snapshot provided]

With all the windows open, if I select the dialer the "random" number disappears to fast to snapshot

Option 2. with iPhone Home screen selected

select phone from Home screen bottom banner

dialer opens again defaulted to the "random" number showing which disappears too quick to snapshot

However, the "random" number isn't random

It apparently was to me initially because I didn't recognise or save it myself and I have NEVER dialled it

In actual fact, when I checked my contacts directory the "random" number/name is stored there

Then I dug deep into my memory and recognised the number as an Assistant from the shop I bought me phone at (Axiom: Dubai) who helped set up my new 6S Plus and transfer onto it all my old iPhone 5S contents

It doesn't stop the problem

But it might be a clue?????

Has a bug been loaded onto my new phone by the shop with sold me it and set it up using their "special" transfer software??

p.s. I have to say it is a reputable shop with a chain of stores: this one in second largest shopping mall in Dubai but they seemed to take a long time and deferred to one person in particular who seemed to be their "go to" man.User uploaded file

Hi smartkidAPN,

If you want to clean up the recent calls on your iPhone, you can tap Recents, tap Edit, and delete individual contacts or tap Clear to remove all contacts from your Recents list.

iPhone User Guide - Make A Call

Return a recent call. Tap Recents, then tap the call. Tap User uploaded file to get more info about the call, or the caller. A red badge indicates the number of missed calls.

You can also reach recent and favorite people you’ve been in contact with from the multitasking screen—just double-click the Home button.

Dial manually. Tap Keypad, enter the number, then tap Call.

Paste a number to the keypad: Tap the screen above the keyboard, then tap Paste.

Happy New Year!

Had the same issue, this did the trick for me:

  • on your phone, go to Settings > Display & Brightness > View > Zoomed > Set
  • wait for phone to quick restart and apply changes
  • Settings > Display & Brightness > View > Standard > Set
  • wait again
  • >> phone app should not display random contact in dialer tab any more

Worked for me, iPhone 6 on iOS 9.3.3

I would like to add my name to this list and hoping any of you following this thread may be up to some more conversation to get this issue more traction on the forum and/or elsewhere.

My symptoms are the same, there is a contact and number stuck at the top of the dialer screen when looking at open apps and occasionally when I open the phone app from scratch. It mostly shows there when double pressing the home button to see what is open and then if I select the phone app from there, it disappears once it goes full screen. Very odd. I cannot put my finger on how long this has been happening.

So I wiped out my mail account and all my contacts. Hard reset. That contact no longer exists on my device.

Problem persists with the same contact (whose information is no longer on my device and is technically not a contact any longer). It is always the same contact/information and is never replaced with different info.

Not sure if it is a caching issue or not and do not want to reset my device or set it up as a new device to potentially have it resurface and pick a new contact to freeze in cached seemingly permanently.

Cannot believe how long it took me just to find a relevant thread on the search engines. This is the only one I found. I highly doubt this is high on any Apple engineer's radar if it is even a blip.

Has anyone else reported this issue or gotten any feedback from anyone at Apple on it? Any additional information available that someone is aware of that may not already be posted?

Using an iPhone 6 Plus fully updated to latest iOS public release.

I suppose it will disappear on my future iPhone 7 and will find out if the issue returns, but I would really like to make it go away sooner than later. Sick of seeing this person's name and phone number every time I switch apps!

Thanks in advance for any dialogue from everybody.

Hi, I don't know if you still have this issue. For those who still do, i was facing the same problem for quite a while. Initially I tried all solutions posted here but did not work. However what did work was - I went to "edit" mode for the contact and changed the "label" of the phone number that was showing up on the screen and disappearing. For example it used to "mobile-+1-XXX-XXX-XXXX". I changed the label from "mobile" to "home". After this I checked and the problem went away. After that i switched the label back to "mobile" and the issue did not come back. I hope this helps anyone who is still facing the same problem.
