Can't mount external USB SSD drive after shutdown

Community,

Loner T you out there!?? ;-) I have a MBP running Bootcamp/W10 and sometimes boot off of an external USB SSD drive. The other day the laptop powered off (I forgot the power cord wasn't plugged in) and now the drive shows in Disk Utility but is greyed out and I don't see it in finder when I powered back up. I did a First Aid on the drive and it checks out fine and did try to unmount it and mount it through the command line. Thoughts? Thank you!

I just couldn't get the Asus working so I gave up on it. I am going with this monitor today and if this doesn't work I am done and back to my old monitor. I definitely will try the Screen Sharing set up (I do that now) but the quality is so so.. I actually couldn't use the Cable Matters MDP to DP cable because it has a bulge on the side and you can't hook a HDMI cable up. I guess I will go with the Monoprice or Rankie MDP to DP adapter since Amazon Basics is out of stock.

This monitor allows P2P and PiP and is NOT 4K..

Yes.. Me again LT.. Welp I am now trying the headless option you were talking about but don't know how to do it. I have tried several VNC viewers trying to connect to my Mac from Windows via Sharing but it doesn't seem to work. I have seen forums talking about loading VINE? Recommendations? I did try Paralles Access but that was about as bad as Teamviewer.

BTW this thing is AWESOME BUT $500 is out of my range..

If you can provide details of your topology and provide the client and server information, we may be able to address performance issues. OS X Screen Sharing is essentially a VNC Server. Windows-to-Windows is much better served using Remote Desktop. Windows-to-Unix (Linux, OS X,...) is better served with TightVNC on the Windows side.

I had much rather spend this kind of money on a Mini Server. The 1924 has no support for TB or USB3, so it is not worth it. I had much rather spend a bit more and get an Apple TB Monitor, which has much better features.

Good morning LT (not sure where you are at 😁) So this is what is going on!!! .. I do audio production/live sound and am redoing my physical wiring/workflow (I usually do it once or twice a year). I have as you know a Late 2012 Mac Mini and a Early 2013 MBP both with Bootcamp. I do a lot of work on both Windows and Mac. The MBP is mostly a mobile workstation and I use it for virtual instruments on the Windows side and to control my Apollo Twin TB card, do administrative work and record sessions on the Mac side. So in a Use Case sense (at my home studio) I basically have been recording all tracks and doing administrative work (email, websites, etc) on my Mac Mini Mac side and then I reboot to mix down and do various other tasks and the Windows side. I really want to stop rebooting and get off of Bootcamp for most part because I don't really know how to backup and restore successfully. I was using Paragon's HDM for Mac but it is failing for some reason right now. I have not tried Carbon Copy or others yet but needless to say I wasn't able to restore via my Windows backup one time which was a nightmare. I DID buy a new Mac Mini to see how the workflow is working. For some reason my MBP is getting really hot and the fan is kicking on causing a lot of noise so I hope to take it out of the loop and only use it live/on the road in the near future (excess fan noise and stuff is really important). I originally beefed up my Mini with 16 GB of mem and put an SSD drive in it and tried running Fusion but couldn't get the sound jitter to go away on my audio software (Pro Tools, etc). THAT actually would work. I did download Parallels yesterday and was going to try that.

So I guess after all that drama: I want to super quickly switch between a full Windows and Mac load. Using macros (such as Command Right Arrow) is awesome on the same machine or even a switch box (I would LOVE a monitor with KVM'ish capability built in). Honestly I like using two different solid boxes instead of using Virtual Sessions (my MPB kinda always stays with me everywhere and I use it for testing and stuff). I ALSO want to beef up off of my older 27 inc IPS monitor (giving it to my son for gaming) and go to something that supports 2560x1440 for more screen area. I did try using a 4K monitor and the font was just too small and I don't know how to do the upscale/downscale options like you can on laptops). I do own a OWC TB 2 dock so I can get 2560 (actually 4K) and I have an extra TB port on my MBP so getting 2560 won't be an issue. What I DON'T want to do is to switch inputs on the monitor to toggle back and forth which is a real mojo workflow killer (even though it's good for your health ;-)..

My thoughts? Apple Monitor with Kanex TB would work or Parallels if it actually does work after I test it or go headless somehow from Windows to Mac or vice versa (which I haven't had good luck with YET). Windows Server Terminal Services (or whatever it is called now) is/was fantastic but I don't believe a lot of my software was supported so I couldn't do it (TS actually is awesome and has pretty no lag). I love the Apple Monitor but it does have a bit of glare (probably not that big of a deal) and is 1K. I am not sure why they are so expensive but they just look good and I don't know why technically. Wait for 5K and then just keeping chasing technology like 8K? Honestly though I just want to get this done and move on! If there is a way to get things set up and I need to put a bit of money into for the long haul I will.

I am super interested in your thoughts..... Thanks for the 100th time...

Wow.. This is a longwinded. Yuk...

1. For Windows backup and restore on a Mac, consider Winclone or Terabyte Image for Linux, if Paragon is not working. CCC will not help with Bootcamp. CloneZilla will clone your entire drive.

2. You can always replace the Mini with a Windows Desktop, if necessary.

3. Anything OS X can be done on MBP, while Windows can go to a regular Windows Desktop. You will have a dedicated machine for each OS. Microsoft Desktop on the Mac will let you access Windows from the Mac.

4. The Windows desktop can have a dedicated monitor with an additional DP port (or you can consider a TB/DP station), which can be used as a monitor for the MBP.

5. You may want to look at LG monitors, which Apple OEMs for their Macs.

Thanks LT.

1. So CloneZilla will let me recover Bootcamp and Mac together if the whole drive crashes? WinClone looks fantastic so far...

2. You mean go without a Mac completely and go Windows?
3. Understood.. I just like sticking with Mac hardware to always have options to go to the Mac side since OS X doesn't load on anything else (without kits, etc).

4. Definitely don't want two monitors. Too much gear on my desk. I am looking at Duet Display and Air Display to use my iPads as alternate monitors.

5. Do you know if LG monitors have any integrated KVM's? I still want to skip a KVM and use macros if possible to switch inputs into the same monitor? Recommend any LG's? Is the Apple Cinema Display made by LG?
