I cannot start Back To My Mac Since Wed Last Week

I noticed almost a week ago that back my mac had turned itself off. I cannot start it again on either of my two Macs. The errors are always the same.

When I try to turn it on it gives the message something is wrong with my account and tells me to turn it off, log out, restart, try again which Ive done 100 times and does nothing.

Some things I have tried and have not worked is:

- reset keychain

- changed location/date/time still fail

- deleted keychain entries dealing with icloud

- deleted preferences dealing with icloud

- created a new admin account on my macs and logged into icloud on that and start BTMM and same fail result

- started up from an external drive containing Mac OS 10.10.4 and log into icloud and try to start BTMM from that and still fails

- logged out of all instances of icloud on all my devices, changed my password logged back into every and tried to start again and that also fails.

I cannot fix this. Is this a problem on Apples end??

Here are my console entries from when I got into icloud in system prefs and try to turn on back to my mac on one of my Macs.

The log entires are very similar for my other Mac that fails as well.

Interestingly, even with BTMM not signed in, I can still screen share with another mac in my house.

That's not surprising. Macs on the same LAN use local Bonjour which does not require BTMM at all.

Assuming you followed the instructions (sign out / in / restart / etc) I doubt that you are doing anything wrong, and it may be a temporary condition that we will just have to wait for Apple to fix.

Thats the same dialog box I am getting on both my Macs as well. When did you notice BTMM had stopped working for you? From my test of starting up from a drive using Mac OS 10.10.4 it doesn't seem like the OS version matters. Ive tried a multitude of things to try to get it to start up to no avail. Ive never really had much of a problem with BTMM until now.

I started noticing the issue a few days ago. Then today narrowed it down to BTMM in system preferences.

I'm now having the same issue, I've wiped my keychain of everything and thought I'd start fresh. Still no luck. Tried all of the "fixes" I could find to no avail. And I'm getting the same errors as you are in Console... The httpstatuscode showing 503 is worrying but potentially pointing to the issue being with apple? And I'm connecting to the same p33-btmm address I guess other people who are fine might be connecting to a different server? Anyway if anyone finds a solution I'd be very grateful if you could share it 🙂

Thats interesting. As of today (a week now) I am still having the issue as well. I have been thinking this is something on Apples end as well. You post helps to confirm that. I still cant help but to think if they were having a issue a LOT more people would be complaining about this though? I hope if it is on their end the fix it soon. Its very frustrating. Like yourself I have also tried everything I can find and think of over the last week and still no luck.

Read Fail to restart Back to my Mac with my Apple ID. There may be other reports; that's just one I happened to come across. The symptoms you describe are identical.

Not necessarily. BTMM is a somewhat esoteric feature that not many people rely upon, while others often do not understand its purpose. There have been similar problems in past OS X releases that affected a far greater number of people, and still it did not result in an overwhelming number of complaints. This particular complaint appears to be isolated to specific Apple IDs, which implies something other than OS X itself is the cause. I have no idea what it might be, but it's not something you are going to be able to fix on your own.

I might have suggested changing your Apple ID but I have no idea if that would have any effect. I rather doubt it will, and it might compound your difficulties.

Contact Apple and tell them about it. They'll probably have you go through the motions of performing all the troubleshooting steps you already performed. Of course that won't solve the problem. That's all you can do.

Ive gone ahead and called Apple Support a bit ago. They are super nice! 🙂 Explained everything I have done so far to try to fix on my own, etc, etc. After a couple transfers had someone who sent me a method to send up my system info/console logs etc to them and are sending it up to an engineer. I will be sure to let you all who are having the same issue know what fix happens and if it ends up being something you can do for yourselves. Thanks.

Yes, same exact thing has happened to me -- not sure how long ago I noticed the problem but at least a few months.

To add some more info here, I have a MacPro with El Capitan, a MacMini with Yosemite and an iMac with El Capitan and this SAME error happens when I try to select BackToMyMac on any of these computers. However, it works fine on the same iMac when I log in under my wife's AppleID. So it's definitely AppleID related ONLY.

Hello All following this. About 8-9 hours ago I updated to 10.11.3 on one of my Macs and was hopeful it might fix whatever this BTMM issue I have been having. After update I restarted and clicked on Back To My Mac in the icloud preferences. It failed to start up with the usual "problem with your account" message. A couple hours later I updated my other Mac to 10.11.3 and tried to start BTMM on that Mac. Results again the same.

HOWEVER! Just about 10 mins ago (about 6 hours after updating the 2nd Mac) I tried it again on one of my Macs for the heck of it and IT STARTED UP!!! I grabbed my other Mac and tried on it and it also started up!! 😮 I dont know if Apple fixed this somehow or the update fixed it and something took time on their end to sort out or whatever but after about 2 weeks now I have finally been able to get BTMM to start up and run on both my Macs! Happy day!

So all I can say at this point is: If you have been unable to start up BTMM the last few weeks update to 10.11.3. If it doesn't start up right after update dont completely despair. Wait a few hours and give it another try! 🙂

I cannot start Back To My Mac Since Wed Last Week
