iPod Classic 160g does not sync

My iPod stopped syncing all of a sudden after my iTunes was updated to 12.3.2 . Tested both USB ports, they work fine. Tested with different cables to connect, even bought a brand new cable, no connection. This exact thing happening is, I plug it into USB, iPod lights up, states "Connecting" and right away goes to "Ok to disconnect with the bar at the bottom" and automatically goes to my main screen. All music thats in it still works. Everything functions fine with the iPod. It just won't sync to my iTunes anymore. Its also, in a way, the back up for my entire iTunes library.

Is it set up to sync automatically? Select iPod in iTunes (click its device button on horizontal bar) to show its settings screen on iTunes window. Along left side (in the sidebar), under Settings, click Music. To the right, the iPod's Music settings screen is shown. Is the checkbox for Sync Music checked? If it's not checked, your iPod is not set to sync music automatically.

NOTE: When you change that setting, any songs on the iPod that are not in your iTunes library will be lost.

If the checkbox for Sync Music is not checked, checkmark it. Below that, if your iTunes music library fits on your iPod, choose the option to sync Entire music library. Then click Apply. iTunes may remove all of your songs from iPod, and then sync your entire music library back. If your iPod has a problem with its hard drive, this may cause an iPod that functioned "as is" to no longer function. If it works, your entire music library will be on the iPod and iTunes will keep it up to date with changes, when you connect it (or click Sync if already connected).

Yes, usually he show that "select language" page. Yes, and also took this time to answer you because I gave it another try, but nothing. When I connect it, he goes to the "Connected" screen, his battery is ok, I suppose, it doesn't. I connect the iPod, nothing happnes (iTunes setted to open up with device connection). If I unplug the iPod, and connect my iPhone, iTunes opens up, although, if I connect the iPod right after that, iTunes will freeze. I mean, until I Disconnect the iPod from the USB port. Do you know if there is a way to reseting its factory settings? Do you believe this might be helpful, or we have another solution to this problem? Don't want to make drama, but this iPod is one of the best things in my life.User uploaded file

As a test, shut down (power off) your Mac and disconnect all USB devices. You can leave standard USB keyboard/mouse connected, if used. Do this to Reset (restart) the iPod

Learn how to reset your iPod - Apple Support (see section iPod with a click wheel)

Start up the Mac, run iTunes, and connect iPod to a direct USB port on the Mac. Is there any change in the iPod being able to stay connected?

Does the iPod still operate as an iPod when disconnected? Even if it does not have any songs on it, does it show it screen menus?

Did you try the later suggestion, copied below

When you do this and connect the iPod, watch the iPod's screen. Does it say "Do not disconnect" or give other indication of a connection? Does it only show the battery charging symbol? Does it not react at all to being connected?

That image shows your iPod has a data connection with the computer. That's good. Eject and disconnect iPod. Then, try putting the iPod into Disk Mode.

Putting iPod into Disk Mode - Apple Support

With other USB devices still disconnected, run iTunes and connect iPod (by itself) to a direct USB port on the computer. If iTunes picks it up, it may prompt you to do a Restore with a message about "recovery." If you are OK with erasing the iPod, tell iTunes to proceed with the Restore.

See this post on reinstalling either the current version of iTunes or a recent one that works better for you: Re: Re: iTune Crashes on latest release.

You do not want to sync if there is content on the device that isn't in your library. See this guide on recovering your media from your device: Recover media from an iPod. As long as it shows in Finder when in disk mode you can get the content off it now before worrying about iTunes.

Connect the device to iTunes and select the icon that appears on the top row.

Then check the sync selections on the various pages such as music, movies, etc. before trying to sync once more. Perhaps it is only syncing one rarely updated playlist. Make sure the content in your library is checked and downloaded. iTunes cannot put Apple Music items or anything that is in the cloud onto an iPod classic. If needs be restore the device and reload it.

It is set to sync automatically from my knowledge. I haven't changed those setting ever. Prior to this, it was simple. I plug the iPod thru usb. It shows up in my itunes. The problem now is, it's not even showing up in my iTunes or my desktop. When I plug in it into usb, the iPod will say "Connected" and within a few seconds "Ejecting" into "Ok to Disconnect". Before, soon as I plug it in, the "syncing" icon and word would show up on my iPod and into my iTunes. Now Its not doing anything now. If I remember correctly now, this happened after my last OS X update on Dec 19.

I'm having the same problem except I'm on windows 7 (and hesitant to upgrade to 10). I'm running up to date itunes and ipod software (itunes 12) for my ipod classic 160gb which is only a couple years old. I've troubleshooted restarting computer, itunes, ipod, different cords, usb ports. Windows recognizes my ipod as an ipod. However itunes doesn't. The iPod itself works fine. I've been having issues for a couple of months. Everyonce and a while it will sync, but I can't find the reason for it. I've also tried turning automatic sync on and off in the preferences.

I'm wondering if it's worth the effort to go back to itunes 11? I'm really unimpressed with Apple at this point.

So, I tried this disk mode thing, and it kind of worked (I tried to flim what was happening, but it wasn't very good). Let me try to explain you: I did this and my iTunes recognized it imediatilly, but there was a window saying something like "iTunes recognized an iPod, which seems to be corrupted, you might have to restore it", and the iPod screen on the back, with the option to restore it, but as soon as I clicked "ok" in this window, the iPod went to the Apple logo screen, and the connection between him and iTunes was gone. I'll try to do it again, maybe try to be a little faster this time, but I'm affraid this won't be 100% helpful.

I am having exactly the same issues. I have a 160gb classic which synced perfectly until recently. I have checked all the drives and they are working correctly - it's just not being recognised by iTunes. If I'm in iTunes it freezes completely and does not provide an iPod icon or anything.

I use an HP laptop so not a MAC programme. Getting very frustrated that nothing is working.

Could someone advise me in as simple terms as possible what else I can try???

I've uninstalled and reinstalled and I cannot even reset the iPod..........any ideas gratefully received

I have tried doing this too but iTunes freezes and the 'devices -> sync icon is greyed out so I cannot click on it.

Normally my iPod was recognised automatically and synced automatically - basically iTunes appears to be the issue not my iPod or my computer. Basically it's pointless at the moment as I cannot update my library to my iPod at all. I'm reluctant to reset my iPod at the risk of losing 1000's of song content because of an Apple software issue ..... which from what I've read and heard seems to be quite widespread.
