Assuming you're talking about the iPhone 5s, follow these steps.

Try to reset your device. This won't delete your data stored on this device.

  • Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button
  • Press and hold on the Home button
  • Keep holding both buttons until the display turns off and back on with Apple logo on it.

Alternatively, you may go to Settings - General - Reset - Reset All Settings

If this does not help, restore your device to factory settings. Note that this will erase the data from your device.

Take a look this Apple Support article: Use iTunes to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support.

As a final step, try the recovery mode. Turn your device off, then plug it to your computer with the home button pressed. Keep the Home button pressed until you see the iTunes logo on the screen of your device. After that on your computer you should see the iTunes window saying your device needs to be restored to factory settings. Click on the restore button.

If these steps don't work, contact Apple and ask for help. This may be a hardware issue.

FYI, iPhone 5 is not equipped with a fingerprint scanner.

Hi, I have iPhone 5s running 9.2.1 my home button work just fine on this iOS. Until the home button and screen had to be replaced. The screen works fine but not the Touch ID. I have replace the charging port hardware and still nothing. I've reset the settings, factory reset, started my iPhone a fresh setup not restored with backup. Still nothing, Very confused but hopping that the new iOS 9.3 will have the fix for this problem.

Thanks for any solutions.

Who replaced the home button and screen? If it was not Apple, that is probably the source of your problem. If this was a 3rd party, they cannot perform the steps necessary to get the home button, Touch ID, and the motherboard to work together. You will not be able to get Touch ID to work in this case. If it was Apple that replaced it, then you need to contact Apple. The other thing that concerns me is the statement about what appears to be you replacing the charging port. If that is correct, and a 3rd party replaced the other hardware, then Apple will not provide any support for that device at all. Opening the device as voided all post-warranty support for the device.
