Subtitles on my AppleTV4 are on by default. For example, I start an episode of a TV show and the subtitles are on; I turn them off; then, when I start the next episode, they're back on again. I see this behavior on both Netflix and Hulu. I don't see this when I watch the same content on other devices so I know it's an Apple TV4 issue. It's very frustrating.
Have you checked your preferences for both of those apps.
I once heard a rumor that Apple monitors these discussions. I don't believe it, though.
They monitor to keep them in order, not to join in with a discussion.
OK, let's take a few steps back.
It's been suggested that you can change your subtitle settings from the website, I don't see any such settings, but this might be because of my location, so could you tell me where you are and what options you see at www.Netflix.com --> your account --> my profile --> playback settings
I am located in the USA and I have no option to change subtitles on/off on the Netflix website. The options related to subtitles only pertain to font size and color, etc.

OK, if you start a movie, then go to the subtitle settings on the Apple TV while it's playing and turn them off, then stop the movie, then resume the movie, does that movie start with subtitles or not.
Pausing does not toggle the subtitles back on. Neither does stopping, as long as I restart without leaving the particular episode or video. If I stop and go to another selection the subs are toggled back on.
OK, that's what I was going to ask next.
So then why if you start a movie, turn off the subs, go to another movie (subs are on, I know), then go back to the first movie.

OK, I had been wondering. I'd found a very small number of movies that started with subs on, I was wondering if it was related to the movie rather than anything else.
I suppose you've done all the quitting the app, reloading the app, resetting settings etc etc.
Yep, all that. I chatted with Netflix support the other day and they said they had other reports and were looking into it. We'll see.
So, at this point, (knock on wood) it appears Netflix has done something on their end to remedy the situation. As of yesterday evening, I am able to move through episodes and videos without the nagging subtitle issue. Haven't had a chance to check Hulu yet. I'll post those results later.
John is not alone in this... and this is still happening as of today.
Only on Netflix App so far (do not have Hulu so cannot speak to it). It must be something wrong with Netflix App itself as can play movies from iTunes, HBO, and other apps with no issue... only Netflix.
It is not about settings on ATV4, though for some reason it was defaulted to "subtitles on" when I started the ATV today. I had previously not had subs turned on. I am very say with the unit (had since launch) and no issues up until 1 week ago.
I have sent an issue ticket to Apple & Netflix... we'll see what happens.
I am still having the issue with Hulu. I don't use HBO or iTunes so I can't speak to that but, as I mentioned in an earlier post, I chatted with Netflix support about the matter and several days later the problem disappeared. Don't know if they actually did something or if it was coincidence. I haven't had a
chance yet but I plan to contact Hulu to see if there is something that can do on their end.
I'm having the exact same problem as OP, can switch the subtitles off during the program, but they default back on as soon as I start watching another episode/program
Subtitles constantly revert to on (Netflix, Hulu, etc)
