You have a few options here.

1. If your only concern is to have a working phone and cost is not a factor, then your best option would be to have Apple replace the device under their out of warranty replacement program.

2. If, however, your data is important then you'll need to pursue a 3rd party who specializes in liquid damage data recovery.

3. Take it to a local 3rd party repair shop to have it diagnosed. Often liquid damaged devices can be easily repaired by replacing a few parts or a simple cleaning. It is important to find a place that will remove the EMI shields on the logic board and properly clean the entire board though. Often these places will not charge for the time it takes to look at and diagnose the phone and if repair is possible it will be much cheaper than replacing the entire phone

Repairing a liquid damaged device for the sake of the device is always a gamble though, and I'd recommend the first option for long term reliability, the second option if your data is the most important factor, and the 3rd option if you can't afford the first.

Hello everyone! Thanks for this long and fascinating thread. It seems to be the most active one around here so I thought I'd add my question to it rather than starting a new thread, and hopefully some of you experts will be able to offer some advice.

I dropped my iphone 4s down the toilet last week. I didn't bother doing any of the stuff people usually recommend, like putting it in rice whatever, because it was already a bit smashed up and I have a new one on the way, arriving tomorrow. However, I just plugged it in on the offchance before throwing it away, and lo and behold it turns on as far as the flashing apple logo screen. Unfortunately itunes and image capture don't recognise it though.

My questions are as follows:

- Can I retrieve any data from the phone in the state it's in? I would like ideally to retrieve those contacts and photos which were added after my last backup to itunes.

- Does my itunes backup include contacts? I read a thread where people were saying very adamantly that it does not. I don't use any other system of backing up my contacts.

The stakes are fairly low for me, because I last backed up to itunes fairly recently, and I didn't have any particularly important photos on there. I also have a new phone on the way given to me by a family member, so either way this isn't going to involve spending lots of money on a new phone or worrying about warranties or anything. I guess the main thing is the contacts. Oh, and the other thing to note is that I live in North Africa. On one hand, IT services are pretty cheap here; on the other there are plenty of cowboys. I know people who've been blackmailed by IT repair guys who've taken photos from their phones, eek. Luckily I don't think I have anything on my phone that anyone could blackmail me with 😀

And yes, I know I'm one of those dumb people that doesn't operate a very careful backing up policy. That will be a priority when I set up my new iphone 🙂 For now, I would love some advice on how feasible it might be to retrieve the contacts & pics from my old one.

Thank you in advance!
