iCloud photos gone from albums and all photos?

Today I looked into my iCloud Photos albums to try and find a photo - only to discover there were only a few photos left in each album, and they had also disappeared from the 'All Photos' section. I haven't changed any settings recently, as far as I am aware, they've just gone. I've attached a Screenshot to show the issue. It is around 500 photos lost, maybe a few more or a few less, but I don't have any other copies of them due to my Mac not wanting to upload anything - since fixed without doing anything.

Previously that album had more than 100 photos in it, all gone but four? If anyone knows how to fix or restore then please help as these photos were very important to me, particularly from this album.

JJust this one unfortunately. It seems the rest may have gone forever, unless there's some way Apple can recover them?

How have your photos been taken? Did you import photos from a card or a camera, or did you take the photos with an iPhone or iPad, and transfer them using My Photo Stream?

Did you import the Photos before you enabled iCloud Photo Library? Is it only recently that you switched to iCloud Photo Library?

The reason I am asking this is I know of only three reasons how photos could be deleted from a Mac's Photos Library without appearing in "Recently Deleted".

If the photos have been transferred with My Photo Stream, but not imported to the Photos Library: After a month iCloud can remove them if they had not been imported. iCloud Photo Library will import them automatically, but if you streamed them to your Mac, before you used iCloud Photo Library, they may now have been removed, after the month was up.
If you deleted the photos on your iPhone and emptied the recently deleted album there. If the mobile device is syncing with the same library, the photos will be missing from iCloud Photo Library and from your Photos library on the Mac.
Or cleaning software to save storage may remove photos from the library, if you used software that is not save for photo libraries.
