iTunes crashes on launch everytime - El Capitan

Yesterday I synced and backed up my iPhone 6 with iTunes. The next day iTunes immediately crashed on launch producing an error report similar as the one below. Ever since I have not been able to launch iTunes without it immediately crashing. I only use iTunes for backup and occasionally transferring audiobooks to my iPhone.

It have the latest iTunes version: 12.3.2 (12.3.2.35) on OS X 10.11.3 (15D21).

My actions leading up to the crash:

  • sync and backup op iPhone (via cable).
  • ran CCleaner with 'iTunes' checked to clean.
  • removed DivX from my Mac.

What I've tried so far to fix it, and unfortunately didn't work:

  • Restarted Mac... obviously
  • Reinstalled iTunes with the installer package.
  • Booted in Safe mode and launched iTunes from there.
  • Removed all iTunes preference (.plist) files from the Application data user folder.
  • Created new iTunes library by booting with option key pressed.
  • Restored from previous iTunes library.
  • Repaired Disk Permissions (via Terminal).

After those attempts I now get a dialog stating the following:

"The last time you opened iTunes, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?"

Which of the two options "Don't Reopen" and "Reopen" I select doesn't matter, the crash still occurs.

What did work: created new user and launched iTunes successfully from that account. Unfortunately this is not workable solution for me.

I hope someone can help me with this problem.

Followed most of your recommendations, removed them and then some.

  • I kept Java for development purposes. I know it's almost end of life, b
  • I love my Synology downloader plugin, therefore keeping it 🙂
  • Scrollreverser is necessary evil to keep my professional workspace aligned.
  • I have NO idea wat iOSinstaller is, but removed all bits and pieces of it (quite a search) - unfortunately it didn't fix the iTunes problem.
  • Checkpoint is our VPN client and is not up for discussion (unfortunately).
  • I enabled System Integrity Protection. Don't know why it was disabled... maybe our sysadmin is to blame, I'll make some inquiries tomorrow.
  • Yeah, loads of Adobe history, I know, heavy user. Not sure about keygens though, all software has always been legally purchased for professional use.
  • And well, iTunes is still crashing 😟

Read this whole message before doing anything.

Back up all data.

Quit iTunes if it’s running.

Step 1

Hold down the option key and select

Go Library

from the Finder menu bar. Move the following items from the Library folder to the Trash, if they exist:

Application Support/SyncServices

Caches/com.apple.iTunes

Caches/QCCompositionRepository-com.apple.iTunes.cache

Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService

Saved Application State/com.apple.iTunes.savedState

Leave the Library folder open. Try iTunes again. If it works now, stop here. Close the Library folder.

Step 2

If you still have problems, quit iTunes again. Go back to the Finder and move the following item from the open Library folder to the Desktop:

iTunes

Note: you are not moving the iTunes application or the iTunes library. You’re moving a folder named “iTunes.” Test. If iTunes now works, delete the iTunes folder on the Desktop. Otherwise, quit iTunes again. Put back the folder you moved, overwriting the newer one that may have been created in its place, and continue.

Step 3

In the Preferences subfolder, there may be several files having names that begin with either of the following strings:

com.apple.iTunes

com.apple.mobile.iTunes

Move them all to the Desktop.

Also in the Preferences folder, there's a subfolder named "ByHost". Open it and do the same thing.

Test again. This time iTunes should perform normally, but your settings will be lost. You may be able to put back some of the files you moved to the Desktop in this step. Relaunch and test after each one. Eventually you should find one or more that causes iTunes to malfunction. Delete those files and recreate whatever settings they contained.

If the issue is still not resolved, quit iTunes again and put all the items you moved to the Desktop back where they were. You don’t need to replace the items you moved to the Trash. Stop here and post again.

If you later decide that you don’t like the results of steps 2 and 3, you can undo them completely by quitting iTunes and restoring the items you deleted in those steps from your backup.

- Does Checkpoint work correctly with SIP back on?

- About Java: this thread is interesting: Update Ruined How my Java Applications Worked it is a long thread but halfway there is an interesting discussion about Apple's Java and Oracle's Java and whether Java is needed.

- Adobe: there must have been something with it in the past, Adobe itself does not change the Hosts file. You don't have to do anything about the Hosts file now.

- What is Adobe ARMDC doing for you?

- what is doing One Apple Task?

Look at:

1. There is still an entry in the Users&Groups->Login Items: SecureClient. Remove with the minus sign?

7. MemoryClean is still there, it is really conflicting with OSX memory handling.

going on now:

10. Internet plugins:

-- is Citric still in use:? if not, trash the plugin

-- Remove all, except: (Citric?), Flashplayer (2), QuickTime, Silverlight(?), DefaultBrowser, Java, OfficeLiveBrowser(?).

especially the PepperFlash must go !

11. Synology and Simbl should be removed: Simbl is not very compatible.

  • Used Adobe's tool to remove old stuff and fix the hosts file.
  • Removed Citrix client; never used it.
  • SecureClient is the VPN client in my understanding; removed it from login items and everything kept working fine.
  • Kept Moom and ScrollReverser as login items -- grown to love them.
  • Endpoint sercurity (VPN) works correctly after SIP was enabled.
  • I removed MemoryClean in the first go. Any thoughts where any remnants may be?

Adobe OK, good job, what was the Adobe tool you used?

Citrix OK.

SecureClient is not running now, are you sure that it has anything to do with your VPN: perhaps ask the IT manager.

Moom and Scrollreverser: 😁 Harmless, but old hat 😁

Endpoint and SIP OK.

MemoryClean: I don't see it anymore, It was in the first etrecheck2.9.3 list under "other apps" and it was running.

If you want you can delete all reports in

Apple SSD->Library->Logs->DiagnosticReports

Then only new reports are seen. But the total size is very little, so it is not really necessary.

Rather clean now. I am satisfied. I hope you too.
