Ran Bootcamp, now have an invisible 30gb partition

Help needed. I ran Bootcamp to install windows (obviously). All went well, rebooted, and nothing. The straight Mac experience. No sign of the win. All I have is a missing 30gbs. This partition is invisible to Disk utility.

Any suggestions as to how I can delete this partition? Thanks.

Was the previous repairDisk executed in Internet Recovery? In Disk Utility, if you click on the outermost disk and click on the Partition tab, do you see any Free Space at the end of the pie chart? Here is my test run.

1. Resize an external CS disk. Notice the gap between GPT2 and GPT3 on disk2.

Sorry for the delay, busy teaching English in Bangkok. (Which is why I tried to install windows in the first place!).

Below is the info requested, as I understood it. If you can tell me exactly what to type, I will proceed. But, not sign of the missing 30gb?

I do have a backup, if it would be easier, can I do a complete reformat?

Thanks.

Ian

No sign of the missing freespace on my diskutil, but it is missing.

If you notice, the current size is ~467 GB. Can you type 499 or 500 in that box and click Apply? If it does allow the number to change, also run First Aid and repair the disk and check.

If that does not work, then instead of further diskutil gymnastics, to get you up and running, the quickest, simplest and safest alternative method to get your disk space back is

1. Backup OSX and all your files - Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support .

2. Boot into Internet Recovery (Command+Opt+R) - OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support .

3. Click on Utilties -> Disk Utility and Erase your internal whole disk.

4. Restore OSX and your files - Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support .

This requires a separate external disk which can accommodate TM backup - Backup disks you can use with Time Machine - Apple Support .

It takes quite some time doing it this way, but it is less labour-intensive compared to the diskutil methods. Your CS volume is not Revertible, otherwise it would be bit easier.

Feb 15, 2016 10:06 PM in response to Loner T

The resize option is greyed out.

Thanks. haha The direct method. Ok. I will try it tonight, now using the comp, and let you know how it goes.

To prevail on your assistance again. I still want to install windows on my Mac in order to run teaching software. Can you direct me to a website that explains better how to do this? I followed the instructions and prompts, but ran into this trouble. Ian.

The official links on Apple work. BCA should be used and it formats the partition as FAT which Windows Installer will convert to NTFS. Please see Boot Camp: Install Windows on your Mac , How to install Windows using Boot Camp - Apple Support and https://help.apple.com/bootcamp/assistant/6.0/ .

This failure of El Capitan BCA 6 is documented and bugs have been filed to make BCA recover gracefully.

Ran Bootcamp, now have an invisible 30gb partition
