iPhone 6 battery dies in cold weather

Battery dies on my iPhone 6 in cold weather. Phone is about 15 months old, and dies from good battery 50% to 30% down to nothing and auto switch off. ON normal weather the battery is still very good and doesn't show sign of weakening on any normal day. But if it is cold outside, phone will dye in minutes if used outdoors. I first noticed when we went skiing around -5C (20-25F) and it was really bad there. But now it started doing it when it's around +5C (41F) shutting the phone down from 30% battery. When I plug it in, it immediately turns the phone back on and shows 25 or 35% remaining....

Anyone? Design issue? Specific app to kill? Running iOS 9.3, but it was already doing it on iOS 9.2 .... Thanks

Hmmmmmm, I dunno maybe use higher quality batteries that don't suffer in the cold as much, like the ones used in the iphone 4 s for instance, I have an old 4S that is used for work it has far more charging cycles on it it is physically much older in years and doesnt go from 100% to flat in an hour outside in temps barely below zero like my iphone 6 does outside in the same pocket of my jacket. All these apple geeks who keep on saying it just works have their heads in the sand. There is a problem with these batteries, Apple are just too obsessed with making people buy the next generation item all the time they can't be arsed. Apple customer service amounts to just about sweet FA.

Does this?

Apple geek alert. Tell me something I don't know I am fully aware of the type of battery. Please tell me why an iphone6 uses more power with everything shut down in my pocket then an iphone 4 in my pocket with everything shut down. Both phones are doing nothing both phones are in my pocket one phone goes from 100% to nothing. The iphone 6. One phone is still at 98%, the iphone 4s. Both phones are doing nothing, everything is shut down. Your argument doesn't stand up and Apple do not admit a problem. The iphone 4s does not have a battery problem the iphone 6 does, get you head out the sand, why defend something that is obviously not fit for purpose. I will leave you to tell apple. I have better things to do than waste oxygen on more Apple geeks. It just works Hahahahaha! In fact dont bother telling me anything I'm not interested.

my battery is 2 days old, just got it replaced on Monday with a new one. 87% charged, left it in the car at 29F and powered off, came back to my car 9 hours, turned it on and down to 10%. SO MUCH for meeting the storage specifications!

checked out "battery life" app and it says the battery wear is 15%!!!

turned on my car, jacked up the heat, stuck the phone to the vent. After warming back up, the battery remain near dead but the battery life app says the wear is 0% now.

let's just say don't depend on your iphone in cold emergencies. and let's stop ignoring that there's a real problem. Otherwise they WON"T do anything about it.

That lithium powered devices don't work at temperatures below freezing is not new, until battery chemistry comes up with another electrolyte it is unlikely to change. And it is not something the manufacturer of the device being powered that way can change. Unless of course they also make batteries in which case they can invest in research.

You are quite right, any lithium powered device is not to be trusted when operated beyond its acceptance range.

Alex my previous phone worked well in cold weather then all of a sudden when it was cold it would lose power fast , my new one was working perfect in the cold , never had and issue in the minus 20 temps but since last update appears that I no longer can take my phone out even when -5

Yet people I know with same phone that do not do the updates it works well in cold , very interesting in my opinion

I've never heard any of my friends having this problem on any of the other Smartphones that are equipped with lithium ion as well. I own an iPhone 6s and had its battery replaced last year in the recall program. Since then I face exactly the same issue. Shutdown in 0 degrees C. Can't use it. I need to use my Xperia in winter times because of that. Ridiculous. No more Apple. I'm done.

I too have had this problem rendering my iPhone 6s unreliable as an emergency back up for 3-4 months of the year and useless as a camera in the snow. I know this isn’t consistent across all iPhone 6s ( comparing with friends in same conditions at the same time). I therefore to to the Aberdeen Apple story where I bought the phone. I was told categorically that there are ultra sophisticated sensors in the phone to shut down and prevent the circuitry damaging itself - the salesman went on to suggest it didn’t happen in later models and that I could cure the problem by buying a later model of i-phone. I considered the explanation to be techno-BS as it was not always unreliable in cold weather and as pointed out was not occurring with other 6s phones. The proposed solution to upgrade is outrageous for a phone that was less than 18 months old. Unless I get a proper response the next phone will not be an Apple.

I consider the battery has deteriorated and Apple are not responding here for fear of the cost of replacing faulty batteries.

Come on Apple either reply with official explanation or offer a fix.

Cold temperatures adversely affect batteries. I don't know what the exact specifications are for the 6S temperature range and I will leave it up to you to find some online. It would surprise me if it couldn't take temperatures in the range you mention. You could take the phone to an Apple Authorized Service Provider for assessment in case you got a bad battery. In the meantime keep the phone in an inside pocket.

I just began researching this same problem. I also have an iPhone 6 approximately 1.5 years old. The phone battery is at 50% or more inside my house with an average temperature of between 20-22 degrees C. Within 10 minutes outside the phone battery drops to below 5% and shuts off completely. The temperature outside was approximately 5 degrees C.
