iPhone 6 battery dies in cold weather

Battery dies on my iPhone 6 in cold weather. Phone is about 15 months old, and dies from good battery 50% to 30% down to nothing and auto switch off. ON normal weather the battery is still very good and doesn't show sign of weakening on any normal day. But if it is cold outside, phone will dye in minutes if used outdoors. I first noticed when we went skiing around -5C (20-25F) and it was really bad there. But now it started doing it when it's around +5C (41F) shutting the phone down from 30% battery. When I plug it in, it immediately turns the phone back on and shows 25 or 35% remaining....

Anyone? Design issue? Specific app to kill? Running iOS 9.3, but it was already doing it on iOS 9.2 .... Thanks

Same issue here. iPhone 6s, 1 year old and 10 days out of warranty when i first took it in, shuts off in temperatures below 45 degrees F. When plugged in for charging battery shows 30%. Up to date iOS, 10.2.1 but happened with previous iOS, and all battery saving features in use. I'm told I must pay to have the battery replaced and 'Perhaps' if it does not fix the issue I would be refunded the battery and installation fees. Frustrating to find other users with similar problems and no resolution from Apple.

I have this issue as well with my 6S--not as noticeable as we live in Texas, though. The first time it happened, we had "cold spell" and it shut off at 28 degrees while I was on a run. It's always had poor battery life compared to my husband's iPhone 6, but this was the first time it completely shut down.

Last week we went to Colorado to ski...it was cold 3-15 degrees the whole time we were there. My phone would consistently shut off after a few minutes outside. I put it under two layers of clothing next to my body and that wasn't enough--I had to go into a building and warm up for 15 minutes before it would turn on. Interestingly, tons of other people had no issues using their phones in the same conditions--including my husband and his iPhone 6.

I went to the Apple Store today and was told to restore the phone. It was clearly having software issues on the diagnostics, but they insisted the battery was fine and it had to be the software. I'm restoring it now and we will see if that helps, but I kind of doubt it. Going to be hard to test now too!

I'm peeved--the Genius bar rep insisted that these batteries are not reliable in temps below 40 and it must have been my "high usage." Am I really supposed to believe that half the country shouldn't be able to rely on their phones for half the year?

I live in Toronto and have an iphone 6s 128GB that I've have for about a year and a half. My iphone constantly shuts down if I am outside in temps below 10 degrees celsius. It will go from 100% battery to dead in less than an hour in my pocket. I fish alot and this is very problematic since i'm frequently outdoors in these temperatures and if i need my cell phone it will be in emergency situations since I'm off the beaten path!

Iphone 6S 128G user here. My phone is not among those affected by the recall/replacement issue.

My phone is about 18 months old now. I used it skiing last February with my drone (Hexo+ drone is controlled by the iPhone via bluetooth, using the phone's GPS so not exactly battery-friendly usage). I got around half an hour of flight time from the drone before it's batteries (the drone's) were depleted during which time the phone was in the top pocket of my rucksack, so not protected from the cold in any way. The phone remained in the chest pocket of my mid-layer the rest of the time and retained sufficient charge to last all day, without having to turn off 3G/Wifi/Bluetooth or resort to low-power mode.

This year, my phone is going from a full charge to dead within 3 hours, while in an inside pocket, with airplane mode and low-power mode enabled.

When I plug in my charger at lunchtime, and the phone warms up, it will wake up with between 60% and 80% charge.

I can see it go from 30% to dead in my hand in the time it takes me to try and make a call or check the weather forecast while outside.

There's definitely an issue here.

I forgot my Iphone 6 on Monday in the car. On Monday night we were hit by the blizzard so I couldn't get back to my iphone until Thursday. I have been trying to charge it for 2 days in a row it is completely unresponsive. Contacted apple and they say the iphone doesn't tolerate cold temperatures because of the chemicals in the battery. At this point I was told to leave the iphone in a warm place for at least 48 hours to see if it charges, if not i have to go through repairs.

I had the same issue with my iPhone 6+ for a long time but finally solved it.

This is what I did:

Make sure you have a backup, either on iCloud or your computer

Plug your phone into your computer and via itunes restore your phone to factory settings. Important that you do this from iTunes and not just on the phone as that will not reinstall the firmware.

Set up your phone as a new phone and re-download your apps again, they will be found in AppStore under purchased.

Photos will download automatically as well as your contacts if they are in the cloud, but you will have to set up your email accounts again.

Not only did this solve the battery issue, the phone is now faster and more responsive again.

If anything goes wrong you can always start over with a new reset and install your old backup, mind the risk that you might download the original problem again.

My phone has a battery that dies as soon as it is any way cold . Phone shuts off and I need to plug it in . Once plugged in it is back to around 50 percent . I took it to apple and they said the battery is running at 95 percent . I am a business owner and feel cheated by apple once again , they have no reason for me at all why my phone is doing what it is , but yet you log in here and it's happened to millions of people . Am I stuck dropping another 1000 dollars on a phone so I can do business outside without my phone dying ???? Someone help because this is rediculous . Thanks

Here we go again.... Days after installing the new iOS to my iPhone 7, it started dying, without warning. It has happened twice when hiking in moderately cold weather, i.e. 37 degrees. I used to have this issue with older iPhones where when skiing with adequate power it would simply die, without warning until I plugged it into power, and then it would show 30%+ battery life.

This JUST started happening, coincidentally? I called Apple up and they told me "it is a known issue for phones to die in cold weather." I disputed whether 37 degrees is cold. It is clearly not. To be clear, the phone is in my pocket mostly during my morning hikes, but when I take it out briefly, it just dies, no warning whatsoever and now way to turn back on, even though I am certain there is power remaining.

I was told that I need to backup and uninstall everything and reinstall the OS, which takes HOURS, to narrow the issue down before they will investigate further or replace my phone with the Apple Care I have paid for.

I love/hate Apple!

This has been going on since the iOS 10 update. I have tried everything and nothing works. It's a software issue and Apple just doesn't care because it affects older models like the 6. I am living with the problem till I get a X, but will take it out into the elements right away and see if the X is any better. If not I will have to change platforms because I am outside a lot.

I have posted graphs in earler posts that show this behavour in Colder weather.

Apple have huge problems with their batteries when they start to get a bit old (like 1 year).

When the battery is new, there is no problem at all to use it outside in 0 degrees C (32F).

If you do the same test 1 year later when the battery have a few 100 charge cycles, the result

will be that the battery goes from 100% to 0% in a few minutes.

And when you take it inside again and warm it up (without charging it) it will start up again and

have maybe 50-70% battery left.

A new battery will solve the problem, for a while...

Yes, batteries do lose performance, but this started to happen right after an early iOS 9 update, did not have the problem before. Also, my other devices that use Li batteries do not have the same issue, including my iPad. I am in Canada so am well aware of battery performance in the cold, and although I am not an electrical engineer, the symptoms scream software not hardware.

Was on vacation, getting ready to take photos of a beautiful sunrise and my phone battery plummets ffrom ~80% to dead!! It was only in the 50sF so not even that cold. For the amount of money we py for these phones the reliability is an ultimate fail. My husband had a Samsung and a Huawei with him and they both worked!!! Been an iPhone supporter for quite sometime but I'm hopping off of this bandwagon. And this battery drainage with every upgrade is a joke
