Mac Pro really not booting - IS THERE A FIX?!

I have a Mac Pro (Early 2008) running Mavericks that refuses to boot and I seriously need some assistance. It froze a couple of times with a 8bit-style colour palette, shortly before a text warning in a grey box, and needed forced restart. Today it will not boot. It hangs on the grey screen with Apple logo, the spinning wheel spins for around 20 seconds and freezes and goes no further no matter what I have done.
I have tried the following:

• Safe mode: the progress bar goes half way and hangs.

• Resetting PRAM - no change in behaviour

• Booting from a recovery drive – I can see the drives as options but again it hangs on trying to boot to them.

• Booting from a CD - as above, or holding C on boot, again hangs

• Cmd-Opt-R with a wired connection does nothing

• Terminal disk verification (/sbin/fsck -fy) says everything is ok, 'reboot' continues the issue
• Tried removing and rearranging RAM.

Via Firewire Target Disk Mode (connected to a MacBook) I have copied off the important files, I have also used Carbon Copy Cloner to make a clone and a HD recovery partition. I again cannot boot the Mac Pro from these (t's just a static pin wheel).

A few other things - one boot-up brought up a large black and white checkerboard (see images below) and in general there are often green lines down the screen (not when it's grey though!)

Importantly, Using Target Disk Mode I have booted the Mac Pro hard drive onto the MacBook, which appears to be running ok (so I'm assuming the Mac Pro HDD is ok?) - I've repaired and verified the Mac Pro HDD through Disk Utilities.

I also copied the Error Report when booting the Mac Pro HDD with the MacBook (see this log below)...

So, what are the next steps to get the Mac Pro booting and working again on it's own? Can I diagnose anything via Target Disk Mode on the MacBook? PLEASE HELP!

I don't see how it can be that since you are on 10.9.

Can you connect the backup disk & try to reboot holding 'option' (a.k.a 'alt'). Select the external when it appears & see if it boots. If that fails remove all internal disks & retry.

The Carbon Copy Clone'd disk should be bootable provided the partition is setup correctly.

That looks like it tries to boot up, and gets very far along. Then it tries to re-draw what is on the display, and blam-o, the display card dies under the pressure of re-drawing the whole screen.

I think your display card is the main remaining impediment to making more progress.

So far you also have a pile of dead RAM, but enough working to start up.

but your basic computer appears to be sound.

Hi, this is booting from the recovery partition of the External hard drive - it hangs at this point. Any thoughts?

Regardless of the drive (internal, external, another Mac) it refuses to boot. I think I'll try to find another compatible graphics/video/display card and take it from there.

It is starting to look more & more fatal to me. You have removed all internal disks & tried the external only?

Remove the graphics card, clean it carefully & reseat it to see if anything changes at all (provided you know about anti static precautions).

It could also be something on the logic board, which makes this an expensive game of 'whack a mole' to find the issue. Are you sure you want to pursue this? You could speak to an Apple store about finding an authorised service centre to take a look? The Mac is getting old though so they may not be willing to look at it (or have trouble getting parts).

There are places that do refurb parts & may part exchange parts if you want to go the route of DIY.

Sorry I'm not seeing anything useful in the verbose log, the SMC errors are a concern, but they may be normal they don't always appear, yet it still hangs.

I respectfully disagree with Drew Reese. A Mac Pro 2008 will run the latest Mac OS X, and is certainly worth replacing its graphics card to get it going. Apple only replaces like-for-like, so they will be no help with a graphics card for this Mac. DO NOT install the original graphics card that shipped in this Mac, it is quite failure-prone.

I see no fatal error messages in that log from Recovery booting. That boot screen you show looks like a successful boot-up, except that the NEXT screen does not appear.

But you demonstrated previously that when your graphics card is asked to re-draw the entire screen, even in Simple mode, it may go bonkers instead of complying, and not draw the correct screen. So you may be left looking at the last successful screen drawn by a successful Recovery Boot.

Hi Grant,

Thank you so much for all your advice (and everyone else!).

I have a possible graphics card I can test and wondered if you would be able to advise ago whether it might be compatible with my Early 2008 model... The links you suggested don't appear to list this card nor do others I found.

Unfortunately all the person I spoke to could only ascertain that it had the serial 603-3254 (which on Googling appears to be a 'Power Mac G5 AGP Video Card GeForce FX 5200 64MB' as listed on an eBay sale).

If I can rule this option out, it's either Genius Bar or bust!

It will not work or even insert in the Mac Pro.

The Mac Pro uses PCle cards and the G5 video card is AGP

I once went to an Apple Genuis Bar and had my iMac diagnosed. They plugged a cable in and it checked for hardware errors.

Is this with diagnostic tool just a prettier version of AHT (which I ran and said everything was fine!) or is it more advanced do you know? If it's the former, there's little hope.

There really is no good way to test a graphics card since the mac cant really tell what happens after the signal goes to the video card.

I has a similar problem years ago when I was running a 2008 8 core Mac pro. turned out to be a bad hard drive.

Interesting... Well, I can boot the HD via target disk mode onto another machine though and it works ok.

Also even without any hard drives IN the machine, I cannot boot to a recovery external drive, nor from the installation disk.

So I *think* I've ruled that out here... could be wrong.
