white lines (with nonresponsive touch) comes and goes randomly

Hi,

i have iphone 6 plus.

Sometimes vertical whitelines come on 1/random th of screen starting from top.

meanwhile they are showing, touch doesn't work sometimes and sometimes it works gibberish.

i press somewhere else and something else gets pressed.

Then suddenly this problem goes away until i am using the phone. (no whitelines or nonresponsive touch, everything becomes perfect)

Once i put it on standby and leave it for sometime the problem will come again sometimes.

Its not software issue since i have reinstalled ios 9.2.1 again and again with full reset. (removed all my apps just to be sure)

There is no hardware fault, since the problem is not persistent and my screen and touch works all other times. I think some wiring or connection is loose. since this problem comes and goes randomly. I can live with it, but its **** annoying. One sec i am talking to someone and i can't cut the call.

Please Help me out, Service center says i have to replace my phone. They dont want to figure this out and just want to replace it for no reason.

Hint: I live in India where these people are not capable of even diagnosing the issue and want me to pay for something i clearly didn't cause.

And since my warranty is out, i have to shell out appx ~ 470$ for a problem which nobody can tell me, and looking up on internet or applying basic logic is just because some wiring is at fault.

I repeat, there is no hardware or software fault. Its some loose wiring and noone at apple service center wants to diagnose what the issue is.

All they want to do is replace the **** phone for no reason.

The problem is very similar to loose wiring. It is like having a string of Christmas lights that will light if you position them just a certain way.
The touch chip is an integrated circuit chip that sits on an array of solder balls. Under the balls is an array of solder pads. On many Apple iDevice boards, there is a substance that is squirted under the chip, surrounding the balls, then hardened that secures the chip to the board. On the iPhone 6/6+ the touch ic chip does not have underfill, so that means that it is susceptible to a cracked joint on one of the balls. This is very much like loose wiring--in the right position it can make electrical contact.

So the Liability is at my end because its susceptible to a cracked joint?

i have this iPhone since 1 year 5 months and now the problem comes up.

There is not a single dent on the iphone, its not bent. I dont even play ping pong with it.

How come suddenly this issue comes up when my warranty is gone.

And even now looking at the issue and another post https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7028290?start=135&tstart=0

it seems this is a widespread issue, why should all of us shell out out of warranty repair for something they clearly did while not testing

the phone properly prior to its release.

Even now if i get out of warranty replace, what if 90days post this problem reappears? I mean its bound to happen sometime right?

If this is not the most horrendous way to earn business i dont know what is.

I'm sorry, but loose wiring is a hardware issue. Since there are no Authorized Apple Service Providers that handle screen repairs, their only alternative is an out of warranty replacement of the device, since your warranty is expired. To be honest, even here in the US, if Apple attempts to replace the screen and it will not correct the issue, their response would be the same, an OOW replacement. They do not do wiring at the Genius Bars. Your response is further handicapped because of your location. You can see if there is a competent 3rd party repair facility that may work on the device. That decision is up to you.

This is a hardware fault. It is a known defect in iPhone 6/6+. The touch ic on the board needs to be replaced. You'll get more information while you're googling if you use the phrase "touch ic" and you'll find thoysands of others with this exact problem. If you are out of warranty, Apple will give you the out of warranty swap option. Your other option is to find a qualified person that does board repair to change your touch ic. While there are people that can do this for you, I would use extreme caution locating someone in India---there are many low quality places that will just reflow your touch ic which means the problem may come back.

Your warranty expired five months ago. If a one-year warranty was not sufficient for your needs, then why did you purchase the product under those terms?

Apple promised the device would not have any issues due to defects in material or workmanship for one year. And by your own admission, it performed for that time frame properly, plus an additional 5 months.

Whether you caused the issue or not is not relevant whatsoever. All that is relevant is that you've reported the problem to the manufacturer after the warranty expired. Your choice is to either obtain service from Apple or an authorized service center, ask for them to grant you an exception based upon a gesture of goodwill, or to seek an alternative resolution.

This is not a point open to debate on this forum. Your technical question has been answered. Have a pleasant day.

You have every right to be frustrated--this stinks for you. But on the other hand, it isn't really feasible for Apple to test the devices by walking around with them for a year to see what fails. They learn as we do and you can see the design improve with each generation.

iPhone 5 had components on the edge of the board behind the SIM tray that commonly got knocked off the board at battery change. In the 5s these were moved and the SIM tray is at the edge of the board. In the iPad 2 there is a tiny flex that fits between the glass and frame and was easily damaged. In the iPad 3 this same flex is now covered with a piece of metal. In the iPhone 6 the frame was initially bendy, but now the same frame is made with a different material that is stronger.

If we really wanted Apple to do enough testing to ensure that our devices would work for more than a year, then the price for the phone would be much higher. They do offer an extended warranty for 2 years for $99, with a $79 deductible---but even still, you can fix this defect for less than that.

It is what it is, with a tight annual cycle to produce innovation, the long term testing of the device comes down to the users. Their deal with us is that it will work for a year, and it did. I know that is still super frustrating for you.

@TJBUS***

We payed for something, we payed good amount. I'd like a ROI on that. its not good enough to say apple provided 1 year warranty on a phone that cost so much. Here in India you can feed 15 families for a month on what we pay apple for 1 single phone. Maybe even 20, if you asked for subsidized ration.

And i am saddened by this act from Apple, because they are known for their service and innovation. And right now it doesnt seem like they are focused on that.

@mendonipadrehab

I am not asking apple to test devices like that, but with the money they get the least they can do is prevent consumer's from frustrating once 1 year expires.

i never had this problem with my iphone 4 or 5. Infact till date they have not been repaired once, in 2 years i get their battery replaced and they function perfectly. Then why does this issue come on iphone 6plus? Clearly there is negligence on Apple's part.

And forgive me for saying this, but what apple is doing after iPhone 5 is not product innovation period. Innovation was iphone 4s, 5. fitting everything into such a sturdy construction, making software like ios 6 which is seamless and absolutely perfect. The iOS after 7 is just focused on fancy UI to lure people like children to candy. Its just fancy UI, nothing innovative.

Tell you what, operate on iphone 5 with ios6 and iphone 5s or any above on IOS9/8/7. You will throw iGadgets above 5s straight into the dumpster when you look at the performance they give.

Nevertheless coming back to the topic (sorry), Warranty doesn't imply apple committed its product lifecycle to be of 1 year, people complain even before 1 year. look at the other thread i referenced. Warranty is nearly equal to insurance from apple. And that is debatable. Hence my concern, issues like the one i mentioned are not due to my usage of this phone, but how they were tested for. Another example : bendgate issue.

Just because people were rampaging on social media, apple claimed to replace those for free. If it didn't gain media traction, they will not do anything.

One more time: If you did not approve of the one-year warranty conditions, then why did you purchase the iPhone?

You talk about a ROI? That's completely on you. If you do not feel that 1-2 years of proper working service is fair for the price you paid for the device, then do not buy the device.

You cannot afford the ownership costs of an item, then do not purchase the item. I could stretch my budget to the limit and purchase a Lamborghini and pay for the insurance premiums. But that would be far too exorbitant and a waste of my money. No one forced you to spend your money on an iPhone. The Return of investment is your issue, not Apple's.

If you have issue with Apple's policies or procedures or warranties, then take it up with them.

No, you're not talking to Apple. If you had read the terms of use of this forum (which you agreed to), you would know that Apple does not monitor these forums for feedback or input from customers. You are (figuratively, but I really want to say literally) talking to a bunch of strangers in the parking lot, not actually talking to anyone from the company inside. We are ALL just users like yourself, rp00.

You have been given excellent answer from users in this thread. The fact that you don't like the REALITY of those answers is not relevant.

You have a hardware issue. Your device needs to be serviced or replaced. End of story. Either get it serviced or replaced, or don't. Up to you.

But ranting and complain about Apple's policies or your local repair options is a complete waste of your time. Now, if you want to keep that up, by all means, friend. It would be mildly amusing. But other than that, it will have no purpose. Unless maybe it makes you feel better to continue to complain someplace that no one that can do anything about it will see.

Once again: Your technical question has been answered. Have a pleasant day. Thank you and come again!
