iTunes movie rental not working

Renting a movie on Apple TV is not working.

I click the rental button, then the Rent and Watch Now button as I usually do, and it just hangs. The status wheel just spins, endlessly, never making the connection.

Everything is up to date. I've logged in and out. I've restarted everything. My internet connection is fine.

It's been like this for days. What's the deal?

Yep, it's been three days now and I'm having the same issue. I experienced it this past weekend and it continues today. I guess Apple doesn't want money from people trying to watch films that just won the Oscars...

What's the story here, Apple? One can rent on iTunes else and use AirPlay or Home Sharing, but that's an extra unnecessary step. Is there a timeline for a fix please?

Nope, there are community hosts that monitor to make sure there are no violations to the TOS, but you will not see involvement here from Apple nor will they be reading this.

Again, other devices working does not rule out the network. It is working just fine for the majority of users. You will need to do some troubleshooting on your end to fix the issue.

When is the last time you tried to rent a film directly via AppleTV? If not within the past 3 days, then you are not providing any helpful information. I can access everything else on my AppleTV -- Netflix, HBO GO, Showtime, etc. Even the iTunes Movies app loads just fine. The issue I'm having (and plenty of others as can be seen above), is that after renting a movie, the app just hangs and the movie does not load. The issue is with Apple.

I rented a movie yesterday. Those other services adapt to the connection. iTunes, is at a fixed rate, higher quality and needs to load a portion before playbacl begins. There are a couple reports here and select groups of users for every generation of ATV, but the majority of users are not experiencing this. There is no widespread issue as would be the case if it was on their end. If you were to take the unit to another network or Apple for testing it would also work fine. Again, proper troubleshooting needs to occur.

VAzandrew, thanks for your feedback, but I don't think you understand the ussue we're having. I have three Apple TVs (two 3rd gen and a new 4th gen). I can rent movies through iTunes just fine on the 3rd gens, however the 4th gen just shows the spinning wheel after I've punched in my code to order the rental. It's not a network speed issue or any other peripheral problem. It lies in the new Apple TV.

I do understand the issue you are having. It may be working on another device, but that does not rule out a network issue and the majority of users are not experiencing the issue. This type of report has been posted from certain users on the 3rd gen, the 2nd gen and the 1st gen and I have worked with a number of those users to rectify the issue.

You will need to troubleshoot the network, or feel free to take it to another location/Apple for testing.
