In the last couple of weeks I've noticed that when I send an iMessage from my iPhone 6 to my best friend, it first shows as delivered, as usual. She then reads it and it'll show as read. Then I'll go back into message later and it's turned back to delivered again, as tho the imessage hasn't been read at all.
Does anybody have an idea as to why its doing this?? Or what I can do to correct this???

Dude, thank you, not only did you explain exactly why this is happening, your reasoning makes perfect sense. All people need to do to correct the situation is actually open the message when sent a text vs read it by the shortcut Apple made... I wish everyone would stop posting back & forth about the hard reset/turning the phone off & on, someone want to update one of the "Genius Bar dudes?" Thanks again man!
I think this has finally been fixed with 10.3 beta 3. I'm on a 5s and have had this problem since 9.3 and it seems to be working!! I'm not going to jynx it though because then I'll go back in messages app and it'll say delivered...
Hi, I tried restore in recovery mode without backup and issue persists. Closing iMessage receipt is delivered not read. I tried with another iPhone with iOS 10.2.1 with my Apple id and my sim and issue persists! So issue is related at apple id or sim?? AppleCare said no issue about apple id, but no solutions. Why another iOS device has same issue with apple id and sim?
I have the same issue. When I use iMessage with one certain contact they read the message then all of a sudden if I close the message app it goes back to delivered when they already read it!! So frustrating! Do you know if they figured out a solution?
Hi, issue is related at iOS sw 9 and 10. Issue appears with two iPhone with my apple id and my sim. I checked another phone with another apple id and another sim, it has same issue. So it's a bug started from iOS 9.3.5, never resolved.
I have a iphone 7 plus and i notice it more when i double text. I send 2 text messages and then they read both and don't reply. i go back and it only says the first text message was read. It's been a while that has happened
Here's what I THINK is causing the problem. If you turn off "read receipts" globally in Settings\Messages\Send Read Receipts but only turn it on for SOME of your contacts (since iOS allows this feature on a contact by contact basis) then the problem will manifest itself as you described.
I had my send read receipts feature turned off globally and only turned it on for some of my contacts. And sure enough, those were the one's I was seeing the problem of the status changing from "Read" to "Delivered."
Once I turned the "Send Read Receipts" on for ALL contacts, the problem seemed to disappear. Now I realize this isn't necessarily a good answer and certainly not an acceptable work around. I'm merely presenting it as a way to help further troubleshoot and re-create the scenario. I'd be curious to see if others try this and get the same results.
I have only had my read receipts turned on globally and not per person or contact. I have been experiencing this issue for over a year now. It's very frustration that Apple hasn't done a fix for this. Every time there is an IOS update I cross my fingers. Maybe next update.
I just upgraded iPhone 6s Plus 10.3.2. The same problem has just now started on my phone. Sent my daughter a text, it showed delivered then read. A few minutes later it went back to delivered. FIX THIS PLEASE.
I've been having this problem as well recently on my iPhone SE. Check that message reads "delivered" before holding both the home button and off button down simultaneously. The phone should automatically shut off and then on again by itself. Go back to that message and check that it changes back to the read time:) hope this helps!!
Send Read Receipts can be changed by the receiver, it cannot be controlled by you.
The receiver isn't doing anything!! If I send another iMessage the first one goes back to showing as read. surely once it shows as read, whether the recipient changes their read reports to on or off, it won't change from read back to received and vice versa??!
True, but what's your problem then. The Read is confirm and delivered.
Why does it do it?? i see it's read, then go back in later and I question myself as to whether it was read or was it another thread I was looking at!! It makes no sense!!!
