Microphone not working with Siri or voice recognition in texting

iPhone 6 - 9.2.1 firmware - - the mic input is not providing a valid signal to Siri, nor voice dictation in Messages. It *does* work fine for the new Music Memo app, so that would indicate the hardware is not broken.

When in Siri or Messages, the indicator of signal shows erratic noise, when in fact, there is no input, and does Not change or respond when there *is* talking.

On off chance you have Onavo installed, delete it. After much headache and grief and wipe to factory settings followed by iTunes restore, further failure, apple chat, and finally genius bar appointment, Onavo was the culprit. It seems to install a profile in VPN that completely stopped dictation/Siri. Onavo had NOT caused a problem until the latest iOS update in Sept., 2016. After that install, dictation/Siri no longer worked.

One other thing: it might not be Onavo per se; look in Settings, under VPN, and see if there's any profile listed there. If so, try deleting it. Genius bar advised that Onavo had done this on my phone but also said they'd seen a few instances where someone had a profile created under VPN (e.g., someone who worked for a health care organization and had a specific profile created that was the only way they could access their employer's website). Probably only a remote possibility, but might be worth checking.
