So, the issue has been officially recognized by Apple, and it has nothing to do with what is happening in China as I previously surmised. It is a battery defect that applies only to certain phones manufactured during September-October 2015. If your phone qualifies, they will issue a battery replacement free of charge.

I brought mine and my wife's phones in this morning and got them replaced for free. It's a good thing I went in early, because I got two of the three remaining batteries they had in stock at that location. 🙂

Hope this helps everyone!

Took my phone in and it "qualified" for the replacement. I'm a bit ****** because I had followed their advice about soft resets, hard resets, turning off location services etc, and even went so far as a total erase with clean install, which was a royal PITA. They clearly knew for a while that this was just like their iPhone 5 problem but were waiting to see it hit a critical mass before they acknowledged it. I also find it odd that they are requiring folks to bring it in rather than just listing the affected serial numbers. Makes me wonder if there is more going on than just a battery issue. For some this will be a major inconvenience since there are not Apple stores or authorized service centers on every corner. Their consumer service has really gone down the dumper.

I don't think this is acceptable since the instructions on the Apple website state, "(y)our iPhone will be examined prior to any service to verify that it is eligible for this program and in working order." I read this to mean that you have to get your phone to them. If it turns out your phone does not qualify, you are out shipping costs and use of the phone. If you are correct, then perhaps the statement should include mention that simply providing the serial number will be enough, although this will still not establish that the phone is in "working order" since it cannot be examined.

I've been suffering from this issue, Apple advisor told me to wipe my phone do a fresh install of ios which I have, but a week later phone has once again started to shut down at 30%.

It's nice to see Apple will only replace batteries of phones released over a certain period, I think this is issue is clearly bigger than they have let on. Also this is a fault caused by a battery failure which should be covered under EU law for 5 years warranty, but they claim, as my phone is over a year old I would have to pay to replace a faulty battery they installed in a phone I've paid a lot of money for.

Apple are doing a recall on iPhone 6s, they have a known battery problem and Apple have kept quiet about it, I only found out because my battery started dying at 40% so I phoned Apple and the lady said "Apple has a call back program on the 6s but it's up to the customer to contact Apple"

This is poor customer service at least Samsung publicly admitted they had a problem with batteries, to make matters worst my local Apple Store told me there's no appointments available for the next 2-3 wks over Christmas, in other words they've had my money who cares...
