my battery frequently dies at 40% but am unsure why?
iPhone 6s, iOS 8.2
Having the same problem here after installing iOS 10.1 Starting shutting down at 30-40%. I installed a complete restore as recommended by Apple Support web site. After a few days the phone started shutting down at 70-80%. Every time I plug it in it restarts and show 70-80% battery. I don't think this is a problem with the phone as much as a problem with the iOS that need to be fixed. Phone worked fine BEFORE update.
On Friday (11/4) I installed IOS update 10.2.2. Until then I had no problems w/ the battery etc. After the install the phone shuts down at about 40-41%. Time was set to auto update and no time zone changes were involved. This happened both Saturday & Sunday, before and after the DST change.
I posted in this thread earlier (10/25) and subsequently went to the Genius bar. They said my battery was fine and that I must have a firmware problem. I had already done an erase/restore from backup without improvement, so at their suggestion did an erase/clean install but with only the bare minimum of apps (i.e., I installed only half of what I originally had). It seemed to make a difference until a couple of days ago when it again crapped out at a battery level of 60% in 60 degree weather. Warming it up (in my armpit for about ten minutes) enabled it to restart, with the battery indicator again showing 60%. Right now, my battery is currently 47% with less than 2 1/2 hours of actual usage and 15 hours of standby. My usage over the past 24 hours shows my main drain is due to "Home and Lock Screen" at 44% with Safari at 11% and Mail at 10%. According to Apple's website, I am supposed to get:
Talk time: Up to 14 hours on 3G
Internet use: Up to 10 hours on 3G, up to 10 hours on LTE, up to 11 hours on Wi‑Fi
HD video playback: Up to 11 hours
Audio playback: Up to 50 hours
Standby time: Up to 10 days
I believe they have a problem with their software or hardware but are trying to blame it on the consumer, kind of like they did with the iPhone 5.
I know this issue is months old, but has anyone found a more permanent fix?
Facing the same: iPhone 6s dies at about 40%, after recharging it runs fine and also later it runs down to 2% in battery with no issue.
My feeling is that I observe this in cold climate, like just not freezing cold. Maybe a temp sensor issue?
I'm also having this problem - went into the store and they said Apple is aware of this problem, something to do with the battery sensor not working properly. They are supposedly issuing a firmware update "soon", maybe by the end of this week. Cold comfort while I've got a phone that will randomly die at anything between 20% and 60% battery! If your phone is in warranty just go in and demand a replacement - that's what I'm going to do if there's no update by Friday.
Really hope that's true. I have been going nuts since updating to iOS 10! I've used apple products for almost 15 years and have never had to visit the genius bar, until my phone started inexplicably dying around 40%. On the street, in the subway, in the office, at home. Brought my 6S in and was told the battery was fine because it passed the diagnostic without issue. The genius personnel then proceeded to patronize me on how to save battery life (including, yes, putting my phone on airplane mode whenever possible), but I basically walked out of the appointment thanking them for essentially doing nothing about my battery and shaming me into thinking it's somehow my fault (when I am in fact militant about my battery usage from location services to background refreshing). But airplane mode, you guys, that will fix everything....? Also was told my Touch ID sensor is broken due to a mysterious hardware malfunction (when it stopped working right after the iOS 10 update), but that's another story unrelated to this thread... Really fed up with Apple these days. T-T
I got the same response over Chat support, with Apple Diagnostics stating hardware is fine. I see the many responses about this since the upgrade to iOS 10 with battery life functioning wonkily at anywhere from 20-60%. If you haven't had success at the Genius Bar, how do other users insist that it be replaced? Annoyed here as well, have been switching between iPhone and the Nexus line of phones since its first debut. Apple needs to fix this issue sooner than "soon"
Hey folks,
I am having the same frustrating problem as you all. My phone is dying at a charge of anywhere between 10 and 60%. When I try to restart, it says it needs to be plugged into power. When I plug it in, it still says it has the original charge, whatever it was between 10 and 60%.
AppleInsider has been following a similar complaint by users in China. A result of the preliminary investigation has been faulty third-party chargers actually damaging the phones.
I know that I am using a number of different charging cords, ranging from higher-end Belkin and Anker chargers to a few cheaper ones. I believe I have some Apple charging cords in the mix, too. I only use apple charging blocks, however.
I'm just curious, how many of you having issues are using third-party chargers?
Hey Bobby,
This is interesting info. I use an Anker and accompanying Anker charger cables, in addition to Apple-issued lightning cables. It's not crappy stuff. However, I've always used third-party chargers/cables (mostly Anker) since even before the 6S phone and have never had these battery issues until now.
Also, what you described (When I try to restart, it says it needs to be plugged into power. When I plug it in, it still says it has the original charge, whatever it was between 10 and 60%) is exactly my experience.
Whether or not my Anker is the issue (and I highly doubt "not," as the Genius Bar said my battery was in good shape), these issues only started when I updated to iOS 10. I really suspect this is a software issue — not a hardware one.
Keep us posted if you learn anything else about these complaints.
Thanks!

My spouse now has the same issue with her iPhone 6.
She just updated to 10.1.1 just as I did.
She is using the original charger and cable that came with it only, all the time.
This same issue happened to me with my old iPhone 5 that I give to my mom, the silliest way to solve is change battery, after that the phone became norma again, may be you used all the battery cycles left of your iPhone battery
I meant easiest not silliest sorry was an autocorrect from my Iphone.
Apple acknoledged the problem to exist with the battery of some iPhones.
You have to check with Apple whether your device qualifies for the replacement program.
Thanks for the info! I've signed up for a battery replacement appointment. Will let everyone know how it goes. Fingers crossed...
