Safari and all browsers not opening Java Script Links - Seems like App Issue

I have 3 ipads and 1 iphone... A few days ago all but 1 of the ipads and my iphone started showing the same issues...


In safari or even with chrome on each affected device, Java script links no longer open. It freezes and becomes unresponsive then crashes.

This is the case from google search bar clicking on a link (and it is OK if I load in desktop request mode) and even from emails with links to a website.

Since 3 devices have the issue and 1 doesn't I am assuming it has to do with a bad app or app update (although never had anything like this happen before from an app.) The 9.2.1 software on the devices has been fine up until a few days ago when this happened

However with many apps on the devices I don't know which app or update is causing the issue. I tried to narrow it down without any luck.

I of course tries clearing the saved data soft rebooting and all that but the issue doe snot go away. Even with all apps swiped close it STILL happens. So maybe it is an app that loads something at startup.

Since I am not seeing any other instances of anything like this that also make sme assume it is an app. Does anyone have any suggestions... At the app store does anyone know if there are diagnostic tools to find an app that may be causing an issue?

I am not suborn and take offense to your calling me that. I asked for help and get insults.


I do not have time to do things with devices I am not someone who has any time in life... just typing message sis affecting my daily routine.


I have upgraded to iOS 9.3 on all devices and the problem is stillt here.

I ten even restored settings on one of the ipads to factory.. STILL have the issues.


I am now restoring the iPad from anb icloud backup... whih meant first it was set to factory and now is restoring... Once this is done, I am hoping the issues is fixed and will do the others. With hindreds of apps this process takes days or weeks per device to fully restore.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities! I'm sorry to hear that you are having this Javascript issue with your devices. If you have a current backup of your data, you may want to try restoring one of the affected devices back to factory settings and testing in that default condition to see if the issue persists. From your question, I understand that hyperlinks are not behaving as expected after updating to iOS 9.3. We know how frustrating situations like this can be and we want to make sure your devices are working as expected.


iOS 9.3.1 was recently released. Performing this update should resolve this situation.

this is happening now on 4 devices and randomly fixes itself. Then again no links to JavaScript including any link in email work again.


I have too much data and apps to restore devices especially when there is no solution to the issue. I can't figure out why this happens and when. I don't have to,e to deal with device restores.


I have also seen nobody else having any issue like this.

Thosmos very frustrating.


Basically. ANY link will not open safar that has java. So nothing from email too it just freezes then crashes. On 3 devices!


Thos also happens with chrome... So it's not a safari issue its something with iOS m


i can't narrow down what causes it as it fixed itself twice and then the links stopped again. ipads iPhone.


Anyone one who has any ideas please let me know. Right now I, hoping next weeks 9.3 update may fox it.

I Have tried every setting. Off on iCloud not iCloud. I have done all that soft renoot hard renoot. Nothing works.


SInce nce this is happening on 4 of my devices and nobody else is reporting issues I would think that:


- Itnis because I have a lot of apps. Although this never was an issue in the past and still have a lot of memory. And why would apps affect loading java web pages and links


- Somehow an App is causing this behavior. Apps shouldn't affect global things like that but may

be that's the case since nobody else seems to be having this issue yet I have it in 4 devices!

Its not a site. It's any site from any link in email safari chrome anywhere.


On 4 devices.


I Haven't reset all settings yet as i want to avoid having to reset everything up again.


I Am waiting until 9.3 comes out Monday and seeing is maybe installing that will fix the issue. If not I'll try to reset all settings.


Whara odd is nobody has this issue at all as far as I can see. I've tried everything. it's not just safari. No inks to anything with JavaScript open. Which includes ANY link in an email.

It is not to any random site.. it is to all sites INCLUDING just the main google search page when you type something in the URL bar.


It is EVERY link in ANY email text ot graphics.


Basically anything that calls to any web browser... Requesting a deskop version of the google search does let me click links but ONLY it appears to ones not using Javascript.. Some will work and others won't


You can test it by just tapping a link in your email. Mine does nothing but freezes the email program sits there little then crashes and closes email. The same with Safari or Chrome.

Mike,

The only thing you do not want to do, but REALLY have to do, now, is backup each device to iTunes to save what data you can off of each device.

Completely erase all the contents of each iDevice and set each device up as new, then do a restore of the recent backups from each device.

I see no other choice for your issues.

You need to have these devices get a fresh start and you need to backup these mobile devices more often, in the future, to protect against these types of mobile device failures/issues.


A mobile computing device is NOT a permanent place to your store important data to. These devices are not as matured, stable and robust enough technology as a full blown laptop or desktop computer to trust for long-term data storage.

You need to have, at least, one other more robust and reliable source to store your important and precious data and images that you never want to lose.

Even on a more robust computer, you need to have/should have a backup of your important data on your computer, that you never want to lose, in case of hard drive failure or some other computer failure.



Here is my own modified backup/restore procedure that has already worked, successfully, for many older iPad users.

I have done this and my iPad 2 and 3 are working like new, " out of the box" units!



THIS PROCEDURE DOES NOT RETURN YOUR iPAD TO ITS PREVIOUS iOS VERSION.

Also, as a disclaimer.

I make no guarantees, expressed or implied, that any of my own procedures will return EVERY older iPad to a usable, running condition.


First, connect your iPad to USB and sync and backup your iPad to iTunes (make sure,FIRST, your iTunes is up to the most latest version).


Then disconnect/eject your iPad from the computer.


From just the iPad, in the Settings App under the General setting, look in the right column for Reset option, then erase and reset your iPad to completely erase your iPad and then, again, from the iPad, set it up as a new iPad setup to factory "out of the box" operation.


Then reconnect your iPad to the computer and make sure to cancel the syncing, by tapping the small X to the left in the top center iTunes display box.

iTunes should detect your iPad. If iTunes begins to try and sync, again, cancel the sync.


Select Restore from Backup instead and pick your last backup to restore back to your iPad.

Once the restore is complete, finish setting up the iPad and let it sync back to iTunes you can either cancel the sync, again or let it backup, again.


Then disconnect the iPad.


Do one hard reset of your iPad by holding down both the Home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until your iPad goes to black and restarts with Apple logo, then release the buttons.



Once your iPad is back to the Home screen,


In the Settings App under the General tab, to the right under Spotlight sesrch, try disabling the search under apps that really do not need a search, like some games, remotes, apps that really do not need to be searched, etc., to reduce the list for Spotlight to search.


In Settings app, under the Safari settings panel, tap the panel and in the right hand window, turn off/disable Safari Suggestions.


Try turning on Reduced Motion.

This is found in the Settings App in the General tab the left panel.

In the right panel look under Accessibility, the look for Reduce Motion and turn this feature "On".

You should see an appreciable performance increase on all iPad 2, 3 and 4 models.


If you have the iOS Mail app set to automatically fetch mail at one of the default fetch time intervals, in the Settings App, under the Mail, Contacts, Calendar settings panel, tap this panel, in the righthand window, turn off/disable Push Mail and set fetching mail for either every hour or set for manual fetch only for all of your mail accounts.


In the Settings App under the General Tab, in the right column, look for Background App Refresh and turn this setting to "off".


If you purchased any music from iTunes, you will need to redownload that content back to your iPad for playing directly from your iPad and not from Apple Music servers.

Also, if your iPad contained a lot of images in the Photos app, these will take time to regenerate the original AND thumbnail images themselves inside of the Photos app when you first launch it.

I have no idea what this long message is about... I know how to back up devices and have backups. Than you for taking the time to try and help.


I am trying to see if anyone has answers to a specific issue I am having. I have plenty of backups and know more about iOS and computing in general than many people.... I am having a very uncommon issue and am looking to see if any one has a suggestion for that... not to restore devices.


I do not have the time or wish to involve in that, especially when the cause of the issue is not known. I do not have the time for that.


The cause could be because I have many apps, OR there is some app that is somehow affecting launch of Java links from everywhere. Since this is on 4 devices, not one, and only seems to affect me, I would think it has to do with an app or app update, although apps arent supposed to mess up the iOS like that.


If anyone has suggestions to get this working again without restoring, .. and I tried turning on and off every safari setting that doesn't matter, and all sorts of reboots... please let me know.


Restoring the device can create the same issue if there is an app or app setting that can be causing this. I will try 9.3 today seeing if that install will help too.

Mike,

This is my own, modified, backup and restore procedure that YOU NEED TO DO so you can put your devices right, again!

You are not going to be able to fix this issues. Period.

No one else is having this issue and no one else here has been able to figure it out for you!

Your issues seems to be unique ones that no one here has ever encountered.

You need to backup ALL your affected devices and restore them as new devices.

You NEED TO DO THIS!

Willing or unwilling!

No one has any idea how this has happened, but at this stage, the only way to solve it is to restore every single device affected back to factory, "out of the box" condition setup as a new device, first, then restore from a backup.

My restore and backup is a little different as to not incur any other issues during the restore process.

You need to wipe every single device affected and set them up as new, blank slate devices, and then restore the backed up data from each device.

There is no other choices, now.

I have outlined what you need to do.

You need to make the hard choice to do this OR stay with devices that don't work properly.

No one has a solution for you.

You have something that is not, specifically, iOS related affecting your iDevices.

A clean wipe and restore of these device might be the only way to clear up this issue.

Try my procedures on one device, to see if this fixes the issues you are having.

If it does, then you need to do this with the rest of your iDevices.

Just do this and stop giving excuses as to why you do not want to do this!

At this point, you really have no other options left to you.

You NEED to make the time and DO THIS!

If someone had this issue and seen this post and had a solution, they would have offered it by now.

You will need to take the time necessary to wipe clean and restore these devices.

Stop being stubborn!

You can choose my backup & restore procedure or use Apple's standard my procedure.

My backup restore procedure is a little different as I set the device of as new away from the computer and away from iTunes after the initial backup.

Plus, once the iDevice is reconnected to the computer and iTunes, I set all that yo as new and THEN do the restore of the data at the very end of the my procedure.

So, the iDevIce stays like a new device during the initilal connection to iTunes on the computer.
