Almost same thing here:

- iOS 9.3

- I'm the original owner of an iPhone 6. Have been using it for 1,5 years now.

- Bought it new when they just came out at an Apple Premium Seller here in Germany.

- Never used a different Apple ID than that only one I have.

- Never activated "find my iPhone".

I bought a new iPhone SE and wanted to hand my iPhone 6 over to my niece. So I did the following steps:

1. I erased contents and settings on my iPhone. (No prompt to deactivate "find my iPhone")

2. Once all the reset process went through and the iPhone restarted and showed the "Hello" display, I turned it off to make the configurations later together with my niece.

3. I logged in to my Apple ID on my computer. I saw my iPhone 6 listed in my devices. I deleted it from my list, just to make sure that it's not connected to my Apple ID anymore.

4. Then I met with my niece and we wanted to install the iPhone 6 with her Apple ID. But the iPhone was locked. It says that it is connected to s*****@yahoo.com and that I have to unlock it. But this is not my ID and it's completely unknown.

I tried to enter my own ID, tried to reset through iTunes, but nothing helped. So I called Apple Care. They said "find my iPhone" is activated and it is locked now. They asked me the obvious questions: did I buy it used, did my family played around with it, have I forgotten about the ID that locked the iPhone etc.

But as stated above: I'm the original owner and neither have used a different ID, nor any family or friends played around with the iPhone.

I asked Apple Care, hey, could it be, that it's a technical activation problem at Apple's? They responded "no, it can't be". They said that it's most likely, that I forgot that I've used that ID to activate "find my iPhone". To be honest, I was a little bit ******.

They asked for my invoice of the purchase which I sent them. They are checking it now and they will come back in about a week they said.

In the end of my talk with Apple Care the following came into my mind and I told them:

When I erased contents and settings on my iPhone, it didn't prompted me to deactivate "find my iPhone" which should be the fact if I would have turned it on. It just reseted. You're not able to reset it without deactivating "find my iPhone".

Apple Care agreed that this sounds unnormal and told that they'll forward this to the engineers.

Now, I'm waiting to Apple to get my iPhone unlocked and get rid off the unknown ID.

Hi herrvo. 3 question.

Did you notice if the phone was in a sealed box that you had to open plastic wrapper? Did you notice the box has an iPhone picture on it or just iPhone written in silver? DDid you also happen to notice the model number of the iPhone starts with an N or an M?

mine is a replacement and starts with an N. Original retail iPhone 6 starts with an M.

IF the phone box was not in plastic wrapper, can you be sure you were first to activate?

Problem 1 - not sure what you mean by sign in and removed phone from your Apple ID; I hope you don't mean find my iPhone on icloud because that implies it was on.

Problem 2 - not sure how but in both your cases; this email address is stored in the phone securely; it's not checking your account online. It's checking the account of the email address shown if it can connect.

Hi iZian,

thank you for your response!

- The phone was in a sealed box. I do remember cutting the plastic wrapper, as I kept that wrapper around the top side of the box attached to it.

- The box has "iPhone" written (with Apple Logo) in silver on the sides and a moulding on the top side of an iPhone (no print).

- Part No. begins with M.

Problem 1: No, I didn't sign in at icloud.com. I logged in into appleid.apple.com, where all my devices are listed, including my Macs.

Problem 2: No clue. Actually I thought that the iPhone checks the IMEI with the Apple Server and database. And according to the database there is an Apple ID connected to it. But I'm not sure if this is how it actually checks.

The fact that I was able to reset the iPhone without the prompt of deactivating "find my iPhone" connected to any Apple ID (mine or the unknown one), let me think that it must be a technical issue.

By the way, I've never "jailbreaked" or manipulated my iPhone.

Passcode yes, but I'm not 100% sure about the iTunes password. I might had to enter it and I might have done it by fingerprint.

Is it generally possible at all to use a different Apple ID for iCloud services like iMessage, FaceTime, iCloud Drive, Store and then a different one for "find my iPhone"? I mean, I've been using the iPhone with the iTunes and Apple stores and all the services I mentioned (except find my iPhone) all the time with my ID. The unknown ID that is locking my phone now has never shown up.

Aren't you asked for the IDs and passwords whenever you have a bigger iOS update? 9.3 just recently where I had to enter my ID which worked out fine.

IT is possible to have a different account signed in for different services. And more than one iCloud account. But only ever one find my phone account.

Apple documentation suggests that you'll be asked for iTunes password if find my

iphone was enabled, it doesn't say and I can't remember if that is to disable it or merely to remove it. And I don't want to proceed that far to try it on mine right now !

I only remember putting in my passcode for the iOS update. Not password. Because which password? I don't think you have to be signed into iCloud or iTunes Store to receive an update.

I know I can change the Apple ID used for iMessage too. I think that can also be different to the iTunes Store and the iCloud. I'm fairly certain from when we used to share one store account.

THe he last thing I can think of is something going wrong with iCloud family ?! I know that I can log into MY itunes account and see my fiancé iPhone from MY find my iPhone screen online. She can log into hers and see mine too. But I guess nobody in your family has that email or you'd recognise.

I have similar problem with my ipad mini 2. I`m sure, that I`ve bought the new one. And I have always had only one Apple Id, which was used for my ipad and icloud. And right now, even after updating 9.3.1 and resetting my device with iTunes, ipad still doesn`t wanna accept my Apple Id. I just have no idea what else I can do to have my tablet working again.

Thank you iZian for your efforts to help!

- I haven't known that it's even possible to use different IDs for different Apple services on one device. I haven't actually tried it.

- You're right, I only had to enter the passcode to start and install the iOS update. But once the update was installed and the iPhone restarted, it asked me for my iCloud ID and password, maybe additionally for the iTunes store. But this might indeed has nothing to do with unlocking anything, but with activating my Apple services.

- This is what the Apple documentation says:

"With Find My iPhone Activation Lock, your Apple ID and password will be required before anyone can:

• Turn off Find My iPhone on your device

• Erase your device

• Reactivate and use your device"

-> And I was able to erase my device without a prompt for entering a password for that unknown Apple ID. It would not make sense to be able to erase the iPhone with my real Apple ID, if the ID for "Find my iPhone" would be different. I assume that I would have been asked explicitly for the "Find my iPhone" one.

- We don't use iCloud family. We've never activated it.

I'm wondering what the technical process is if an iPhone tries to activate itself. Is it for sure that the iPhone securely stores the origin ID in itself and checks for it? If so, it must be a hack, a pre-activated device when I bought it (though brand-new from a legit Reseller) or just magic of how that unknown ID came into my iPhone.

Or, what I've been thinking, does the iPhone check its IMEI online in the Apple database and looks to which ID its connected? Which would conclude to have an problem in Apple's database.

Apr 2, 2016 1:37 AM in response to iZian

I have tried to install/restore with iTunes by connecting to my Mac. But the first thing that shows up is the activation prompt without any other option than entering the ID and password.

I haven't tried it through recovery mode. To be honest, I wouldn't like to try this, because I've initiated Apple's support.

It's an unnormal device behavior and I would like to get rid of that unknown ID, if it is indeed somewhere stored and rooted in my iPhone. If the recovery mode thing would work for now, the ID might pop up at any other circumstances again.
