Brian, thanks for the hint!

Unfortunately, I'm not able to update or install anything. The first thing that happens is asking for the ID for activation. No other option.

The person at Apple Care that I had on the phone said that he's not making the final decision, but he sounded optimistic on unlocking my iPhone when I was able to proof my legit purchase of it by sending him the invoice.

Nevertheless, the idea is quite scary if I would have bought a legit used iPhone and would have not have an invoice where my name is printed on. It might have done it much more complicated.

Here is my update:

Apple unlocked my iPhone yesterday. I received an email from Apple Care stating that they have reviewed my invoice and unlocked the iPhone. I called my Apple Care contact to ask him if there are any documentation on why my iPhone was connected and locked to an unknown ID. He was very kind, took the time, tried to be as helpful as he can and answered all questions that he had answers for. But unfortunately he didn't have any further informations. Apple engineers might keep such informations confidential. At least he said that there are no signs for that my account got hacked, so he could exclude that possibility.

Then he gave me instructions to update the iOS to 9.3.1 in Recovery Mode. After that I met with my niece, I handed over her new iPhone and we both activated and installed it as her's. It worked. I hope that that unknown ID won't pop up again in the future.

I suppose that's some good news. But not great for explaining how. The reason it wasn't explained I think would either mean that they don't know or can't tell. I honestly think, at the moment, that Apple doesn't know how this has happened.

I had a theory it was to do with people getting their phone network unlocked by a 3rd party. But doesn't sound like you had. Or the account being one on the iTunes family; but you'd probably have recognised that?

GOt to wonder if Apple have recognised a problem that they don't know how to fix that they wouldn't tell everyone because it would be open season for people to claim a stolen iPhone was locked incorrectly; so they'd hope people still had an invoice with a serial number on it....

I'M convinced that this was a screw up on the iOS 9.3 update. I was so angry that my iPad was useless for almost a month. Its a good thing that the Apple Store unlocked my iPad although my receipt didn't have the serial number.

I Was prepared to never buy another Apple product again.

I Decided to turn off find my iPhone before every update. If my phone would have locked up I would have been forced to buy a new phone, and as angry as I was with Apple, I would have gone with android.

I am having the same exact problem - went to restore the iPhone, on Apple's recommendation.

What initiated this was an issue with rapid battery drain. Frankly it does not seem to be tied to 9.3 or 9.3.1. I didn't want to guess as to what was causing the battery drain. I ran Xcode and the Instruments app to monitor the iPhone. I found one system task - identityservices - that was consistently using 50 to 100+% CPU cycles. EXC diagnostics reports on the phone itself consistently pointed to a thread that was dealing with Messages.

The same issue created battery drain on the watch and a second iPhone and watch we have on our account. Turned off all iOS devices, rebooted, and it went away - for a little while. Started back up - called Apple support - got routed to a tier II person - recommended I restore the phone and set it up as a new device.

Then, last night went to restore the phone as new device - ran into "Activate iPhone" with an email hint of "T*****@yahoo.com." Called Apple, quickly routed to a tier II - followed by Tier III person. Sent my proof of purchase - it's now in the hands of a "small team" that will fix it. BTW, if you do some reasonable searches on the various forums - you will see a number of what appears to similar legitimate issues. And in multiple cases they were not using 9.x.

Very strange that another Apple ID mysteriously got 'associated' with my iPhone. Phone was purchased new, from Apple, and set up with our ID.

I'm guessing this bad ID may be creating an issue with the message queue and as a result - indentityservices - using so much CPU.

One thing I can say - I'm using the second iPhone myself right now - no battery loss - no issues - no problems.

I'll post what happens.
