I've had this exact problem too, and have been on the phone for 3 hours trying to help their 'engineers' resolve it.

So apparently this is caused by something taking the DRM slot which Netflix uses to verify content and on older Macs (before 2014) as they have a different DRM procedure or chip than the newer ones. So what ended up happening was they installed some scripts on my computer to reset various thing in safari, caches, cookies etc and we ended up basically restoring safari to its original state but even though this we couldn't come to a resolve.

So still today I live with this same issue, for some reason netflix will work in Chrome but Netflix doesn't support Chrome either as they haven't enabled Chrome utilised high definition on it.

  • Things i can possibly resolve this for you is to enter in to safari this link 'http://netflix.com/clearcookies' this will clear only the netflix cookies and apparently others have found luck with this.
  • Try create a new user and try whether this works for you.
  • Boot your computer in safe mode, what this does is only runs system files, or file that were put on to the computer during installation, nothing user based. To do this hold Shift on start up and it should boot as usually except in red text you should see safe mode.
  • Last resort: If your still feeling adventurous take a backup of your computer and complete a fresh install and If this doesn't work nothing you do will be able to fix this with ease.

I'll try to be of assistance to you as I'm also eager to see what your findings are with this issue and sharing this may also be a help to other people with the same problem.

A few more things what operations system are you running on your mac? e.g. 10.11.4?

And Just to clarify you are using safari correct? And if so what version?

There are a few more things we can try if the first 3 don't work, although if your feeling keen try the last one.

Cheers

Apple is not interested in fixing Netflix's problems. Netflix competes with Apple. Apple would probably prefer that you purchase movies from the iTunes Store.

The problem appears to be the result of Netflix's zeal for digital copyright protection, and whatever method they use to accomplish that is causing problems with Safari.

When streaming Netflix movies on Safari you will get that error, or others, for no apparent reason. The movie will just stop streaming and refuse to start. Restarting Safari won't help. Restarting your Mac will, but the fix will only be temporary. Your only recourse is to keep bugging Netflix. Maybe cancelling your subscription will get their attention. You shouldn't have to put up with their ineptitude.

Something I have noticed is that not all Netflix movies/shows are blocked on safari. I've been trying to watch Marvel: Agents of Shield, and that won't play on Safari. However, Farscape runs just fine. I can consistently go between the two, get the error code on Marvel, and then watch farscape no problem. I tried emptying the cache in the develop tab and that didn't work. I also deleted silverlight, which didn't change anything either. Any other ideas?

Hi! This solution does not work on my Mac Book Air.

Netflix tell me that this is an "open issue" and they are currently in discussions with Apple to resolve it. They also believe it's an "Apple issue" and not a "Netflix issue". I tend to believe this because it only happened after the OS-X 10.11.4 upgrade.

Using a different browser (I've tried both Opera and Google Chrome) works.

If that were the case then why does Netflix work fine in alternative browsers. Most folks seem to have got this problem AFTER the OS-X 10.11.4 upgrade. Clearly, something has changed within Safari!
