I have an iPhone 6 (128GB) purchased about a year and a half ago. It's out of warranty. I'm running the latest version of iOS (9.3.2). Several days ago, the GPS services stopped working. Any mapping apps or detailed location services are no longer functional.
I went to a local Apple Store, and the Genius indicated that I was not the first person he's encountered with this problem, but that Apple does not currently recognize it as a known issue. He told me it was a hardware issue, and that there was nothing he could do except offer to sell me a replacement phone for about $300. He suggested writing to Apple at apple.com/feedback
Unsatisfied, I tried calling Apple support. The service person had me reset network settings and double-check multiple configurations in the OS settings. Nothing. He left me with three options:
1 - In the Apple Maps app, click "report an issue" and an Apple engineer should follow up. Perhaps it is a problem they are working on.
2 - Backup the phone and then perform a full restore
3 - Buy a replacement phone
I reported the issue via Apple Feedback, and in the Apple Maps app, and I will try the software restore (although from what I'm reading, and what I was told during my visit to the Apple Store, it appears to be a hardware issue.)
This is truly disappointing as this is a core functionality of a very expensive device. I did not purchase AppleCare Plus because I carefully avoid damage and am willing to risk replacing a broken screen if need be. But I expect Apple to step up and own premature hardware failures.
Some screenshots from my phone showing the inaccuracy using Waze and Apple Maps. Apple Maps had me about a half mile off course.
