iOS 9.3 - Safari/Mail freezes after clicking links on iPhone 6S

Hi,

Never had any problems with my iPhone 6S. Just upgraded to iOS 9.3 without any issues. After the upgrade, I can't click links when searching something on Google in Safari or clicking a link in the Mail, the apps just freeze.

I tried clearing Safari history data/cache, closing all apps and restarting the phone (both regular and holding both home/power key), disabling all sorts of settings form Safari settings, but no luck.. Anyone with an idea how to sort it out?

I have the same problem with mail, Safari, and messages. Links work with the gmail app. Links work in Chrome but only with a long click to get the option to open in a new tab. It appears this has happened before with 9.2.1 but I could not find an answer that fixed the problem. I do not think it started until 24 hours after the update. iPhone 6s+ 128gb 9.3.

Just to contribute something more to your incredible research... despite my so-called "work-around" of using only the Gmail app or Inbox, which links take me to Chrome (which works fine), I have noticed the following: I now seem to be able to click on links within Safari now when I go there through the Safari app rather than through Mail (links in Mail and iMessage still freeze app). I have also tried a few of the fruitless suggestions to plug the phone into the computer, do the on/off with iTunes, airplane mode, also even resetting the network settings--all to no avail. However, after each of these my phone acts up even more, occasionally freezing when I attempt swipe to put in my code after reset, and sometimes thereafter the swipe will freeze. After resetting the network settings on my phone, it inexplicably took my MBP offline, as well. Also, iTunes had trouble recognizing and trusting my MBP for awhile. I, too, am concerned about iCloud and the issue of my having two Apple IDs--one before there was ever a cloud, and one they "gave" me automatically during one of the early iPhone/cloud installs. To keep things simple, I try to use only the me.com (or iCloud.com), but worry that, across my many Apple devices, there are apps installed under the other ID.

Of me, my husband, and my son, all of us have the version that ends with 234, all did the update OTA, all have iPhone 6s pluses, and only 2 of us have this issue, while the other does not (even though he DID have the Booking.com app). Could the version in some way reflect the geographical area which selects the best download location? (We are all in Texas). Another note, my fingerprint ID, which had been working flawlessly, now occasionally fails.

Of note: I received an email from an acquaintance, who is a high-level engineer at Apple Cupertino, on an unrelated matter, apologizing for a delay in getting back with me on an unrelated matter, saying that, due to the recent "issue" plaguing Apple, they are all slammed with meetings, implying day and night, and she has little time for sleep or anything else. So...it appears that something is progressing there.

On a last note, I am to receive the new iPad Pro 9.7" today, and I will be interested and concerned to see if /how it is affected. I got rid of my iPad 4 and mini just prior to the problem, so don't know if they were affected. I guess I will hold up on installing a backup on the Pro until I see a fix. Thanks again for all the useful information!

I too am having freezing issues in the mail app, safari... with my iPhone 6plus 128GB. I have reached out to Apple support twice about this and can't believe Apple has not been able to come up with a solution. I would be happy to go back to iOS 9.2. Why doesn't Apple allow this "no brainer"? This is so frustrating! I have lost my patience with Apple...

Safari processing of domain names? Certificate issues?

Ok, sort of in that vein, and the link-processing vein that seems to be affecting iOS 9 re: link manifests like Booking.com’s, I found this in a separate thread here from 2013 at

“After using Firefox for many years, I decided that it's time to give Safari another try. There's however a minor issue that is bothering me. I've quite an extensive local network, have my own DNS server, and Safari ignores the local domain (lastname.ch) that is configured at the level of the dhcp server.

On all software except Safari url's like "printer" (for my network printer/scanner), synology1, or webcam2 resolve to the ip addresses that are behind printer.lastname.ch, synology1.lastname.ch, webcam2.lastname.ch, etc. However, in Safari I really have to type the full domain or it's taking me to Apple's competitor Google.

Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

[Time evidently goes by, so AppleStefan bumps the thread with a short post. No response from Apple... unless Jblumel below is from Apple.]

I don't think there is currently a fix for this in Safari

The behavior used to be that, if you typed in a value where a name lookup failed, it would append .com to it and try a lookup, and if that failed, prepend www. and try a lookup for that (I believe that was the sequence, but it's been a while since it behaved that way). If any of those succeeded, it would load the site you wanted. This behavior allowed it to use the domain search value(s) from /etc/resolve.conf and hostnames and aliases from /etc/hosts.

Now, the behavior is apparently that if the value you enter doesn't "look like" a valid hostname, it will skip the lookups altogether and do a search using your default search provider (Safari Preferences/General). It's pretty annoying if, for example, you have a bunch of /etc/hosts entries so you can just type in a short alias and have it quickly load a site (in which case the search results are usually worthless to you). Firefox seems to at least go through the process of a lookup before sending you off to the search provider, whereas, Safari apparently skips the lookup if the value doesn't look like a hostname..

The only workaround seems to be to load the site/page once using the full hostname, then, for subsequent access, use the Top Hits section from the suggestions list to pick the url you actually want. Often, if it's a relatively unique name, it may be pre-selected for you. I found it works best if Safari Preferences/Privacy/Prevent search engine from providing suggestions is checked.

So, for example, once you load 'webcam2.lastname.ch' once, you swhould be able to start typing 'webcam2' and that site should show up in the Top Hits, perhaps even preselected, so you can just hit enter. How well this works depends on how many other sites you go to with similar names and how frequently you go to them.

Hello,

reading this thread is interesting.

I do have same problems with a couple of my devices (6s, Ipad...). I almost crashes my 3d touch in the beginning because I thought something I do wrong when I pressed it :-)

Also must admit that I tried a couple of proposals how to fix it. Disable Java script is a no It will cripple a lot of url.

After a while I decided if apple will not tell us officially a work around then all this ideas are somehow waste of time. Even though for some people it did work which I really doubt.

Hope apple recognizes that links do not work in

* mail

* imsg

* whatsapp

* calendar !!! ( so if you use your phone for work with calendar entries including links...you are stuck)

* banking apps

* booking apps

* ebay

* amazon

.......

I just hope that they will bring out a release which fixes all of these.....

And it is not only links do not work but also freezes apps and phone

Following this thread a while already hoping and hoping that the fix will come soon.

I could only accept this delay because apple will not only fix this issue but will surprise us with a lot of new features....:-)

So the trend is that for using an iphone for business you need to have a test phone which you use to test everytime something new is coming out or never update IOS after waiting at least couple of month.

Updating apps seems also a becoming more risky
