iOS 9.3 - Safari/Mail freezes after clicking links on iPhone 6S

Hi,

Never had any problems with my iPhone 6S. Just upgraded to iOS 9.3 without any issues. After the upgrade, I can't click links when searching something on Google in Safari or clicking a link in the Mail, the apps just freeze.

I tried clearing Safari history data/cache, closing all apps and restarting the phone (both regular and holding both home/power key), disabling all sorts of settings form Safari settings, but no luck.. Anyone with an idea how to sort it out?

I have the same problem with mail, Safari, and messages. Links work with the gmail app. Links work in Chrome but only with a long click to get the option to open in a new tab. It appears this has happened before with 9.2.1 but I could not find an answer that fixed the problem. I do not think it started until 24 hours after the update. iPhone 6s+ 128gb 9.3.

I have the same issue on iPhone 6 running 9.2.1, suddenly clicking on hyperlink in Safari does nothing (e.g. Google search results), holding on hyperlink freezes the Safari completely and one has to kill it.

The same behaviour is in Mail app.

In Firefox, clicking on the link doesn't work either, holding and opening in new tab works.

In Opera Mini, clicking on hyperlink originally worked, but in another week, it stopped working, too. So only solution is to hold and open in new tab.

How the **** this can happen suddenly without updating? I'm still on iOS 9.2.1 and it makes me angry. In fact, I'm more and more disappointed with iOS. Although having iPhone since the first generation (1 -> 3G -> 4 -> 6), I'm thinking about switching to Android..

It is not an 9.3 update issue but a 9.0 issue so that is why you are seeing it. An app you have - it could be one or more - updated. In simplified terms an app has links embedded in it that associate to the hyperlink you click on. The way to do this in the app is to use "wildcards" but some developers simply entered every link. For some reason Apple put a limit to the number of links that could be called and so when the maximum is hit it puts the phone into an endless loop. 9.3.1 will fix this limitation. If you will upgrade it will solve tthis issue. Do not click on the hyperlink on the upgrade screen that explains what the update will do as this will freeze your phone. Only use the update & install button.

then why did we not experience this until 9.3 was released?

Because it took certain apps to be updated with bad configuration files before the bug revealed itself. One in particular was the booking.com app. That’s why it wasn’t picked up in all the betas releases before. People with experience and knowledge now know this bug has existed since iOS 9.0.That’s why it’s possible for bugs to go undetected no matter how much you test things. Bugs often don’t show until an update is released to the world at large where tens of millions of real life users are hitting it with untold variations of setups. Sometimes it takes a combination of factors to trigger a bug. That’s why some experience the bug while others don’t. And beta testers typically are experienced users who don’t have weird setups and goofy apps installed.

It’s false logic to make the assumption that comprehensive testing will find all bugs. Software is very complicated and, much like living organisms, code interacts with other code sometime unpredictably.

I Saw this bug on my iPhone 6 Plus since iOS 9.3.1, not before. My iPhone 6 Plus is useless since weeks now. Can't use safari, App Store, Game Center or Game Center depending apps, TestFlight, Apple Music, and many more features like many sections of the Settings apps. 9.3.1 is NOT fixing anything. I see this bug actually on other devices too like a iphone 5s. i tried the 9.3.2 beta on the iPhone 5s but it has not fixed the problem still. This bug causes problems in many other iOS features like in app purchase stops working within apps. Just about any feature that relies on using your iTunes account and contacting Apple servers is affected and does not work anymore, everything just freeze. **** with this!
