OS X 10.11.4 freezing and/or crashing while using Safari

Hi everyone!

Have others experienced freezing and sometimes crashing of Mac OS X 10.11.4 while using Safari? Is this a known issue or is it just me?

The way this manifests itself is that scrolling and mouse movements suddenly start to get slow and jerky. Then, within 30 seconds to a minute, the keyboard stops working and mouse clicks no longer have an effect, but the mouse cursor will still move. Then it either stays that way indefinitely or the system crashes. The only recourse is to force a reboot using the power button.

This happens to me every other day, but I cannot reproduce it on demand. I believe (but I'm not certain) that the first such crash has occurred before the recent upgrade to 10.11.4.

This is on a

Mac mini (Late 2012)

Mac OS X 10.11.4

Safari 9.1 (11601.5.17.1)

Cheers

Bee and cdhw,

It seems that Flash Player was causing my "freezing" issue. The very last version of Flash Player (21.0.0.213) was showing as installed on System preference but an earlier version of Flash Player somehow appeared to be used by Safari. I have no idea how this happened, possibly a corruption of some sort during the latest update of El Capitan.

What did I do? I had to uninstall Flash Player fully, using the Adobe Flash Player uninstaller. I ran without it for a few days and no freeze occurred. I re-installed Flash Player yesterday as it is needed on some websites and I remain "freeze free". It is however still early days to say that the re-installed Flash Player is "freeze-free" but so far so good.

Just sharing:-

I have exactly the same problem after 10.11.4 update on imac. My computer crashes and it just try restarting on it's own for about 6 times and more. I have to unplug to stop it restarting.

I have been on the phone with apple senior advisor since last week. We have try everything and finally they advise me to wipe out my hard-disk to reinstall. However, I wasn't able to do that as it seemed my imac cannot connect to the internet after the crashes. This turns out to be a blessing.

The next morning, I try 'command R' and it manage to revive again for a couple of hours. I suspected it's safari but no proof. Since then, it can restart erratically occasionally, I was certain there's has to be other fixes without wiping out my hard drive!!! Can you imagine one has to do that!

After the update, all my devise, laptop, ipad, iphone started experiencing problem signing into my wi-fi. It keeps asking me to select network and sign-in with password every time the device log into wi-fi.

Back again to Apple advisor and they assured me, my setting was correct. However I felt there's some conflict in the setting, that is why the imac can't connect to the internet to do a hard disk recovery. Lucky for me, otherwise it would have wipe my hard disk and I have to reinstall everything again.

I then went to changes a couple of settings in the Airport Utility and voila I have no problem with all the devices automatically login.

I set google chrome as a default browser to stop safari opening in my imac. With safari out of the way. My iMac hasn't crash for 8 hours today. Finger crossed. I hope it last.

Nothing works. I've tried changing browsers. Firefox runs very hot in the CPU and eventually complete freezes.

To those of you suggesting all kinds of complicated fixes: THIS IS NOT WHY WE USE MACS.

Apple is starting to resemble VW with its refusal to address its diesel problems.

You should start your own post then. This thread is about those having problems with OSX 10.11.4 and Safari freezing. Apparently you have a different issue if Firefox causes you Mac to run hot. You will not get much help if you post to the wrong thread.

i am running 10.11.5 beta 1 for a few days now, nothing has changed. I even get freezes now without any browser open, no flash installed, and the computer more or less idling with the screen off and just some itunes internet radio playing. RAM usage is at about 8GB (of 32 total). Hardware test fine, memtest OK. Since Apple is reportedly working on Metal and the underlying graphics framework in order to leave their neglected and slow openGL-implementation behind, I currently suspect a driver issue.
