2008 Mac Pro only starts when resetting PRAM

I very rarely turn off my 2008 Mac Pro as it's a hassle to restart. I get a gray screen with no action so have to shut down, pull power cord for 15 seconds and then do a PRAM reset as it starts.

Any idea what's going on -- maybe a failing battery on the MB?
Thanks

Alan

Notcloudy That is the issue -- I can select the OS X disc at startup after pressing the Option key but when I go to System Preferences<Startup Disc there is none to chose. Alan

You have corrupt system preferences - and they do have a cache. I have Intego Washing machine - and when I show what it deletes on Preferences cache it is in Your library-caches- preferencepane.search index.cache.

If you delete the cache (as it all caches) it does reappear later on --

You also might want to log out and log back in again and check the startup disk preference.

Touch a forest of wood - fingers crossed and all that - my system is back to stability (struggle started in November)

So the System Preferences cache needs to be deleted? Can you please give me the exact location.

Thanks

When you look at folders in your hard drive - click on users - your name - then your Library and in that are caches.

As I use Intego Washing machine to empty caches as required -- can't give you more than that (also am on snow leopard).
