How do I stop the Music app from opening on my iPhone when I plug in my headphones?

I've got an iPhone 6 running the latest software. I've noticed since a few updates ago that when I plus in my headphones the Music app opens, even when the phone is locked. I find this really irritating, as there are obviously a lot of other reasons I would plug in my headphones other than to use that app. It also opens to the same song each time (first song alphabetically), instead of something more logical like the last song I listened to.

In any case, I have to assume Apple developers wouldn't create this without a way to turn it off - anyone know how?

(This is almost as annoying as the time they assumed everyone wanted a free U2 album in their music library. Please don't make assumptions on my behalf!)

Does anyone have an answer for this? I absolutely HATE this idiot feature. Every time I go to make a phone call the stupid phone starts blaring music. Apple, this is really ridiculous that there's no way to turn it off and make it stop doing this.

I hate to say it but this is still a problem.... I had this same issue with my iPhone 7+ and thought it was just that phone. Never questioned it just planned to replace the phone. Until I bought the iPhone XS Max 4 days ago and guess what? It’s still happening. Apple replaced my phone yesterday and the new one is doing it again today! It seems that they aren’t recognising it as a common problem

I am having this issue as well, however; when I have another app open that I listen to and I am trying to pause this app music comes on instead. I do not have my music open, but it plays anyway. I tried the above suggestion, but it doesn't seem to have helped. Its really annoying!!!!!!! I want to pause the meditation app and my music plays instead!

So, I signed up for these boards because I’ve been having the same issue in regards to music auto-playing, and came across a solution that has worked for me. I have an iPhone 6 and depend on a white noise app and sound-cancelling headphones to sleep through the night.

If you use third-party wired headphones, the issue for voice control/Siri/Music autoplaying at the slightest movement is the fault of metal on your phone touching the outer rim of your headphone jack. A lot of headphones have a little metal nub at the base of the jack that locks it in, but also makes the phone sensors internally go nuts and cause your phone to act possessed.

What I ended up doing was getting a small square of black electrical tape, poking a hole in the middle and threading the jack that connects to the phone through it so that there’s a barrier between the base that usually touches the outer part of the phone and the long part that actually inserts into the phone. Headphones still work, jack still rests firmly inside phone, but with that layer it prevents the random autoplay issue when you want to listen to anything else besides the music app.

I have this problem too. I have a third party headset that I use for phone calls. Sometimes the music comes on terminating my call. I must admit that so far, it has never happened when I am using the phone without a headset.

I read many of the suggestions.

1-I only have Handoff in my Settings menu so don't know how to disable suggested apps. Also I never use Music so don't know why it would suggest it.

2-This also happens when I am in my car and the phone is not connected to any power in the car. It is often in my handbag and suddenly there is music coming out of the car speakers which is coming from the phone. (I do not have CarPlay) just regular Bluetooth. Just to be safe I disabled CarPlay or rather I removed my car from the list.

3-I had the same car and the same phone for years and this never happened. This is a fairly recent (last 6 months) thing.

Is Apple going to add a Autoplay On/Off for their Apple Music App or Not??? I want to listen to something besides music on my radio like stream talk shows, etc, but I can’t because it pauses and as soon as I press play button the music app plays music instead and it’s impossible to turn off the stupid music app because it will just turn on again by itself. Ugh.. if it wasn’t a company phone I’d throw it off a cliff after I poured gasoline on it and burned the Android wannabe... missing my HTC One :(

iphone 8 = garbage!

Exact same issue on iphone X and latest Ipad, I can be watching something and all of a sudden what i'm watching halts and some random song from my playlist starts to play, it is highly annoying, i don't want to remove music app as i have some albums and things i like to listen to, but there MUST be a way to prevent it just deciding to start to play something randomly! come on apple that cannot be hard to have a enable or disable option for that happening! fix it !

This has to be one of my favorite iOS bugs, especially because apple is all about the experience of music...

Here is my automatic music playing experience on my iphone 6.

I get into my car, connect my iphone via BT and make a call. Then as soon as the person answers, I hear them with a random song playing like an underscore while I try to talk to them. The best part is I can't stop the song from playing. Oh, I see the mini player but its pause button won't respond to my touch until I end the call.

After trying the majority of suggestions on this thread. The best solution I could find was to delete all my music from my iPhone and use Spotify or Amazon Prime which apple won't let autoplay.

Of course, the music app still opens whenever I attach my apple headphones or attach it to a bluetooth speaker/car. But since there is no music to play it just looks stupid instead of me.

Apple please stop adding useless features until you can get the core features of your phones to work reliably. Phone first of features are second.

I believe this feature is part of Suggested Apps. It thinks you want to listen to music so it automatically opens music for you when headphones are detected, likely because you have been doing this a lot recently. You can't disable this behavior specifically, but you can turn off app suggestions altogether by going to Settings > General > Handoff & Suggested Apps > turn off switch labeled 'Installed Apps'.
