Trying to upgrade OS 10.6.8 to el capitan. App store says 10.6.8 is compatible, but when I start updater, it says it needs 10.11. Not sure how to proceed.

I have the same issue. But when I click on the Apple store it does not lis the OS X for El Capitan. It only shows MacOS

Sierra and requires 10.7 or later. How do I upgrade from 10.6.8?

i too havent heard much good coming out of Lion. Do i have other options to upgrade with my current laptop config?

With the possible exception of Lion, you can't upgrade your OS.
