iPad Pro 9.7 Random Restart

Normally wouldn't think much of this but, I have a 2 day old iPad Pro 9.7 128GB that has restart on me twice so far. In the middle of using it, it will cut to the Apple logo on the black background for a minute before returning to the passcode screen. Oddly enough, it will accept Touch ID in place of a passcode, something it doesn't usually do when it loses power. Any idea on the cause or how to figure it out? I chatted with the tech support but they only help they could provide was to do a restore. I just performed it, but my concern is that I installed an app or enabled something causing the iPad to crash and it'll simply continue to do that due to the bad app.

My random restarts stopped with 10.2 but this ipad has multiple problems. The only things the techs can tell you to do is to factory reset. The problems keep changing. One time it was freezing and now pages in Safari turn white. Apple won't admit that these ipads are defective. They will do nothing except factory resets. How many times do you need to reset the iPad to get it to work for awhile until Apple admits there is a problem..They won't admit any of their products are defective.

There is no easy way to replicate, it is very random when it occurs. It does seem to happen when using the app switcher. whether that's pressing home button twice, or four finger swipe up, by the time you choose the other app it crashes. Also, it's happened just pressing home button to get back to home screen. I don't know if safari or mail have anything to do with it per se, I'm pretty sure I've been in other apps and just pressing home button to minimize crashes the iPad. Maybe others can say if it's happened with other apps besides just safari and mail.

Well after almost a week of no crashes with 9.3.2, my silver 256 gb iPad pro 9.7 (cellular + wifi) crashed. I was opening Word Whizzle when for some reason safari randomly opened. I closed safari and attempted to open Word Whizzle again and it crashed.

While Safari was involved with this crash, most of the time when my iPad crashes I am not even using safari. Nor is it open in the background. Most of my crashes happen when I switch from one app to another. Especially when using apps like The Sims or SimCity.

WHile the crashes only last a few seconds most of the time, it is still very disconcerting...mainly because I don't know why this is happening. While I suspect the issue is software related (this is my second iPad Pro 9.7 with this issue), it's always in the back of my mind that it could be hardware related or that my iPad is part of a batch of lemon devices. When you spend $1000 on a device that has issues right out the box you can't help but wonder if the worst is yet to come???

Rest assured that if there is a problem with the product, Apple will make it right. I tried pushing mine by opening all types of programs and switching between memory intensive applications and I couldn't get it to even stutter. I would look at this as a good sign for everyone as I upgraded mine probably a bit differently than most. I started with the Developer Release 1 and updated with each beta released and then I upgraded to the final version by using the over the air upgrade. It would seem that perhaps something in a previous beta that stayed when I upgraded.

I was told that I would get a replacement iPad two days ago for this issue by Apple, but now I'm second guessing if I should even bother exchanging. Seems lots of people have done that and still have the restart issue. As a side note it seems that 9.3.3 Beta 1 is out, but not for iPad 9.7 Pro. So no fix in sight yet, not even for the bricking issue. I've NEVER experienced buying a new product, it rebooting randomly out of the box, and hoping that a bug releases fixes with no fix in sight. I love my iPad but I'm seriously considering getting an Android at this point, ugh! At least it will "Just work".

I doubt this is a hardware issue, and I wonder if it isn't related to the amount of RAM in the 9.7's and how iOS handles shifting from one sandboxes app to another with all the instant saving of state that occurs. I mean these routines may have been better optimized for the larger iPad Pro. It doesn't bother me to have a partial restart - when it goes to the Apple logo and comes back to Home in a few seconds - because that's much better than the difficulty in killing a hanging app in OSX or, worse, the need to restart OSX. It's a bit more troubling when the iPad 9.7 completely restarts but that doesn't happen nearly as often and even then the process takes much less time than on my MacBook Pro and then doesn't necessitate a bunch of fiddling to restart processes, etc.

While I agree that the restart is not debilitating to it's use, it is unaccepotable for a product that lines itself up as a Pro Tool and it costs $1000. This is also happening out of the box, not 5 updates into it's life cycle. If it was working fine and then an update caused this it might be more forgiving to look past it, but brand new out of the box?? Not to mention that this doesn't appear to be affecting other iPads, like the 12" bigger version or even older iPads. My older iPad Air which was on 9.3 before I bought this new one didn't have the issue. I will say that if it was a complete restart, not just a springboard restart, I would have returned this. I'm still holding hope an update will fix this.

I Downloaded Chrome on my iPad and have been using that exclusively for the past 4 days and not one crash. I have to consciously make sure that I don't click on links in my email or imessage or any where else as it will launch Safari by default. If I copy any links and then paste them into chrome and don't open Safari at all, it seems to be stable. Maybe it is a Safari issue...I minimize and switch between apps with no problems so far. If by accident I end up launching Safari via a link, I quickly close it and open it in Chrome by copying and pasting. See if this helps, it seems to for me, but clearly Apple needs to look at this. I will keep submitting crashes via the feedback tool, since I subscribe to the ios BETAs.
