iPad Pro 9.7 Random Restart

Normally wouldn't think much of this but, I have a 2 day old iPad Pro 9.7 128GB that has restart on me twice so far. In the middle of using it, it will cut to the Apple logo on the black background for a minute before returning to the passcode screen. Oddly enough, it will accept Touch ID in place of a passcode, something it doesn't usually do when it loses power. Any idea on the cause or how to figure it out? I chatted with the tech support but they only help they could provide was to do a restore. I just performed it, but my concern is that I installed an app or enabled something causing the iPad to crash and it'll simply continue to do that due to the bad app.

My random restarts stopped with 10.2 but this ipad has multiple problems. The only things the techs can tell you to do is to factory reset. The problems keep changing. One time it was freezing and now pages in Safari turn white. Apple won't admit that these ipads are defective. They will do nothing except factory resets. How many times do you need to reset the iPad to get it to work for awhile until Apple admits there is a problem..They won't admit any of their products are defective.

Look, I posted previously the differences between the 9.7 and 12.9 versions of the iPad Pro, the only substantive difference is the Wi-Fi chip. It just doesn't make logical sense that individuals having replacement iPads continually having the same problems on different units, that others do not have at all. I would say that sure maybe the first time it could be a problem with the device, twice with the same issue, it is something you are doing differently from the rest of the masses that do not have these issues.

To constantly complain without trying to figure out if it is an issue with something else you are using is not going to get you a solution to your problem. If a cohort of individuals seeing the same issue could publicly say how they are connecting to the internet, the sole difference in the hardware, you could provide what is most likely an issue with another product you are using with your iPad. If it is an issue with an old or unique gateway, this issue could be addressed by Apple with a small addition to the driver file for the connectivity chip in question.

But without further information provided by those with the issue (who are a very small minority), it will not be possible to diagnose where the issue lies. Those of us that are interested in figuring out issues like this can search out issues with other hardware compatibilities by actually getting our hands on the other hardware you are using and replicating the issue, but not without your help by discussing how you are using the product.

I Have worked with Senior Advisors and have sent data to Apple per their request. I was told awhile ago that the engineers have enough data and don't need any more. Not once have I been asked by senior advisors about my wifi setup. All they know is to tell you to factory reset the iPad. If Apple needs the information let them acknowledge that there is a problem and ask for the info they need. I doubt that people in Spain, Germany, England, etc are using the same equipment and ISPs we are. We are complaining because there is a problem and Apple is not reaching out to us. If they need this info let them ask or are you an Apple employee?

Normally people post to community forums to try to find a solution to their problem, I see no other reason why someone would post a problem here. I am simply trying to help you figure out the source of the problem you are having. Your pushback to someone attempting to help is strikingly bizarre and perhaps an indication that no problem actually exists to begin with. Sorry for trying to assist you with a problem you apparently do not want solved.

Does not matter to the case WitchyTripod.

Three remarks:

1.

I had a talk with a senior advisor too, he told me to (indeed) do a factory reset, and leave the machine clean for a while.

I tried in a very rapid manner to open all apps and Safari tabs, in order to trigger the reboot. Nothing happened.

But after a while I needed my old apps and settings, so I flashed my backup back on the device.

I had the reboots again. Though ONE thing changed: instead of a white Apple logo on a black background, I now have the black logo on a white background!

I need to say, in the process I seem to have transferred from the old 9.2.2 edition (which could brick the iPad but luckily did not with mine) to the new 9.2.2 edition. And I haven't played long enough with the "clean" device to conclude there wasn't any reboot problem.

2.

The WiFi chip is a good thing to explore. Though some evidence exclude the chip as a cause, similar chips have proved to be culprits before in the days of yonder.

My setup is a TP-Link Archer C9 V1. I'm on the 2.5 GHz band; I've shut down the 5 GHz band as it was unreliable (lost connections on whichever device).

3.

Seems to me the Apple company policy is to avoid at all costs to look clueless. Problems with hardware are dealt with in small font size on obscure pages on the website, problems with software are solved silently in any update.

Thing is, the AAPL stocks may not lose value.

So, if we as a community can help providing data to nail this b****d, I for one am happy to do so. Regardless of the rigid attitude of the company. It comes with the $1000++ deal for the Apple brand device.

To conclude: I'm sure Apple will show recognition of the problem as soon as they've figured out the solution. And the recognition will come in the form of either a silent update or a hush-hush Apple Repair Extension Program.

There is a known issue with the TP-Link Archer C9 V1. The linux kernel running on it has a vulnerability that also results in random restarts of connected devices. Here is the white paper.

TP-Link has not released a fix for the router, However if you want to venture into the DD-WRT open wireless firmware you can get to the forum discussing this issue on this router: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=1000696

This is the issue and almost every router is affected if it was produced prior to the NetUSB problem being found in the linux code. This is definitely what is causing the problem with the iPad Pro 9.7".

This now explains why I was having kernel panics in a macOS MacBook Pro at one of my homes and not at the other.

It's actually a NetUSB issue. I personally had a connection issue with a 4th Generation Apple TV connected through my ASUS router until I updated the firmware to the latest version.

Same issue here.

Apologies if another commenter has already stated this...

No matter how many contacts folks have made with Apple Geniuses, advisers on phone, etc. it is always a good idea if everyone experiencing a problem like this fills out a feedback request. I don't know how many of these need to be filled out for Apple to realize the canary has died in the coal mine, but it certainly seems safe to say that the more the better. Here is the link to the iPad feedback site. You could simply cut and paste the OP's comment in the description box.

That is one issue that allows for malicious code to take over the router. There are other consequences for having the non-uniform packet size, namely causing applications and things like a springboard program or other daemons to crash.

This is the issue, the unique wi-fi chip utilized in the 9.7 iPad Pro was the dead giveaway. This is not an issue with an up-to-date Apple product, but the router that you are using to get online. To ensure you don't run into NetUSB issues, get a router that doesn't have a built-in USB port for file sharing or printer sharing. If you do get one with these features make sure to keep it updated. I have never had a problem with Ubiquiti EdgeMax Routers or their UniFi WAPs but I have with the top of the line ASUS router (the one that has like 12 antennae).

The issue was so similar to this iPad problem you are having, except it was my Apple TV that kept crashing out of programs to the Apple boot image, ASUS had fixed the NetUSB problem in a firmware update, and it not only fixed the crashing but also boosted performance overall.
