iPad Pro 9.7 Random Restart

Normally wouldn't think much of this but, I have a 2 day old iPad Pro 9.7 128GB that has restart on me twice so far. In the middle of using it, it will cut to the Apple logo on the black background for a minute before returning to the passcode screen. Oddly enough, it will accept Touch ID in place of a passcode, something it doesn't usually do when it loses power. Any idea on the cause or how to figure it out? I chatted with the tech support but they only help they could provide was to do a restore. I just performed it, but my concern is that I installed an app or enabled something causing the iPad to crash and it'll simply continue to do that due to the bad app.

My random restarts stopped with 10.2 but this ipad has multiple problems. The only things the techs can tell you to do is to factory reset. The problems keep changing. One time it was freezing and now pages in Safari turn white. Apple won't admit that these ipads are defective. They will do nothing except factory resets. How many times do you need to reset the iPad to get it to work for awhile until Apple admits there is a problem..They won't admit any of their products are defective.

theshrubbery, if all of us change routers to a model that you suggest is free of problems, and the problem still exists, then what?

I suggest to fill in the Apple feedback form each and every time the problem occurs.

And I suggest advertising this software/hardware problem on every social media platform available. This works - I posted one tweet and Apple Support contacted me the very same minute.

This problem has to get out to every Apple news covering site; the ones who post about how fabulous this device is...

As soon as I hit the home button after posting it did it again. With this newest IPad it isn't as frequent. As others have said it seems to be a home button issue. If Apple has to recall all of these because it is a hardware issue their stock and sales will tank. Shrubbery is just trying to deflect the issue away from Apple and to the consumer.

Rexboe,

The Asus RT-AC66R with the latest update still contains the NetUSB security hole, which has been a huge issue for routers that have a USB port that can be shared between computers. Not only will it cause kernel panics on Unix-based systems like linux, macOS or iOS, but it opens up your system to potential hackers. You can see the release notes of the updates and not a single one addresses the NetUSB flaw:

Here is an explanation of the issues with the RT-AC66R:

I think you are in luck however as there is a DD-WRT firmware release to make this router stable:

Best.

whsalumni,

The Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station is no longer sold by Apple. The product was pulled from the shelves at the same time that they released the most current update 7.7.7 and 7.6.7 depending upon which version of it you have.

Apple did not release why they pulled this item, it was thought that it was due to the impending FCC deadline for having the 802.11ac standard as approved in place, and the product uses an Apple variant. However they never released the reason for this item pull. It very well could be because of this compatibility issue occurring between the two Apple products that was discovered with the new Wi-Fi chip being used.

If you have another USB-free wireless router available, I would try hooking it up and seeing if it corrects the issue you are having with the iPad Pro. If it does than your warranty for the iPad Pro will cover the AirPort Extreme Base Station too, and I would wait until Apple releases their replacement for the old AirPort Base Station, and then call them and explain how you came upon this issue.

If you don't have another wireless router, you could go to a local Best Buy or Fry's and just get a cheap wireless router that doesn't have a USB port (to be sure you aren't inheriting a NetUSB flaw) and see if the router fixes your issue, you always have 30 days to return it to either store.

Believe it or not, I am merely trying to help in what seemed to me to be an odd issue happening to a small number of people. It's also good to make sure your network is secure and if it has the NetUSB flaw, it is not. I'm not getting anything out of helping here other than the satisfaction of trying to help others, so please don't impugn my integrity.

Best of luck.

Jegelie2,

I am not getting anything for helping here, just trying to diagnose an odd issue and perhaps enhance the security of wireless networks. I have had this very issue with the Apple TV but thankfully ASUS had a fix for my particular router, otherwise I would have been having the same problem with my 9.7" iPad Pro. I was particularly curious about this issue that was being seen by several people because I was trying to replicate it with my two separate networks, and I couldn't get it to crash. (An Asus Router and Extender & A large Ubiquiti UniFi wireless system w/ an EdgeMax Router)

If you are having this issue, you should try to see if you have a router that is affected by the NetUSB flaw as it is a huge hole for hackers to exploit. I can look up your router for you to see if you have this issue with the router you use. Many routers can use open-source linux firmware that fixes the security issue, so you may not need to purchase anything, just flash the router with an alternate OS.
