appleTV keeps asking for appleID, password and authentication code circularly

after updating my iPhone I was asked to use the double authentication code, I had no idea of what kind of nightmare this is. I spent hours going from a device to another checking passwords and authentication codes. The last one is the Apple TV, after this stupid innovation my appleTV keeps asking for my AppleID, password and authentication code, and than goes back to the request for the appleID. Basically my AppleTV is useless. how can I eliminate the stupid authentication code, that makes all my devices basically inaccessible?

iPhone 6, iOS 9.3.1

Apparently the new Apple TVs will work as expected. The older ones are not designed for two-factor; but Apple should fix this via a software update (will they?).... but the work-around works.

Do not turn two-factor off because of this, just go to your iphone and get a fresh code after you type-in the password on the Apple TV and before you append two-factor code. Do this by....

(On iphone or ipad)

  • going to settings, iCloud
  • click on your iCloud ID at top of screen
  • click on "Password & Security"
  • click on "Get Verification code"

... then just type that code in the password field after your ATV password.

It works, I've done it on three older Apple TVs.

It seems a common problem and with this type of device and I for one cannot understand it. Its supposed to be a TV not mobile device one of the least mobile devices in the Apple Range!

I have heard about these self-generated passwords and I have tried it several times but always get it rejected!

I reset the whole TV and removed streaming from security. Now I only get asked once or twice. Never like before when my elderly Mum could happily watch my TV and selection of comedy(!) all evening, poor Mum she really cannot handle Password requests and two factor authentication well yes Apple this is really a great shame some customers really cannot handle this. She was a fan not having to stand up and insert DVD's like before, but not any more !

Responding to this hoping it helps at least one person. What a nightmare, Apple!!!! For no reason the AppleTV I've used for years stopped accepting my login info. Literally two months of frustration with this BS. Finally I saw someone mention the issue could be a 30 second time limit on the verification code that gets sent to you that you need to add after your password. I went to iCloud and turned off the 6 digit verification code and chose security questions instead. When I went back to the AppleTV I was in on the first try. If the root of the problem was a 30 second time limit on entering the verification code then shame on Apple for being so STUPID!!

ALL the problems here are the result of the two-factor code's 30-second time out. By the time you put in your password on the Appletv, the code you'd received up front has expired.

The solution is to get the two-factor code AFTER you've typed in your password (and before you hit enter), then add the six digit code to the end of the password and it works.

How do you get a fresh code when you want it?

On iphone or ipad

  • go to settings, iCloud
  • click on your iCloud ID at top of screen
  • click on "Password & Security"
  • click on "Get Verification code"

Append that new code to the password on your apple tv and you're done.

This does not work. I have tried it multiple times.

I have tried appending the code to the password with space and without space

I have tried getting to the next screen and inputting the code when Apple TV asks for it

It does not work

NOTHING WORKS APPLE THIS IS APPALLING AND I CAN EVEN CHAT WITH AN APPLE SUPPORT PERSON TO HAVE THEM SOLVE IT. FOR GOODNESS SAKE JUST TURN OFF THE REQUIREMENT FOR TWO FACTOR AUTHENTIFICATION ON APPLE TV.

you cant even turn two factor authentification off any more.

If anyone else has a solution other than smashing the Apple TV device with a hammer I would love to hear it .

I cannot use my Apple TVs with the two step authentication turned on. I have read every forum and tried exactly what is recommended a ton of times. The two step authentication cannot be turned off now as some suggested and also adding the verification code to the password doesn’t work even when I complete it within 30 seconds. Apple Please help!! It is not fair to your customers!!!

Glad u got ur app tv box up n running again. I agree with you I won’t invest in an upgrade and when my 3rd generation box becomes defunct and no longer works I too won’t look to Apple for an upgrade I’ll do what many others are doing and use an alternative.

It’s a shame because Apple products have always been high quality but when it comes to suggestions they don’t even listen to the customer and that’s probably going to be the downfall as more loyal customers will start to look elsewhere for simple more user friendly products to work hand in hand with their selection of gadgets.

Everyday I sign in with a password I set the day before. It always tells me that password is incorrect. When I change it, the same thing happens again as if it never registered but I know it did. What causes this. This happened on my husband’s phone and he is locked out of his and Apple support could not help me unlock it. Actually there are two problems here.

That’s good to know but I must I’m sure like many Apple consumers query why they choose to end after care service? I would have thought Apple of all brands would try to retain customer loyalty and offer unlimited customer support even with older versions of products.

yes it business viability, though surely, when weighed against the sales and purchases from both new and existing customer base acquisition, Apple would prefer to continue to rise above its competitors and, a way to stand out from the crowd; just as it has done in the past, it’s objectives would strive to excel in after care service and unlike its competitors keep all models of products as up to date a possible as the loyalty from long term customer base would influence new customers having heard that this brand is exceptional when it comes to after care service, and that would outweigh the nominal expense Apple incurred keeping all product models up to date and user friendly.
