appleTV keeps asking for appleID, password and authentication code circularly

after updating my iPhone I was asked to use the double authentication code, I had no idea of what kind of nightmare this is. I spent hours going from a device to another checking passwords and authentication codes. The last one is the Apple TV, after this stupid innovation my appleTV keeps asking for my AppleID, password and authentication code, and than goes back to the request for the appleID. Basically my AppleTV is useless. how can I eliminate the stupid authentication code, that makes all my devices basically inaccessible?

Apparently the new Apple TVs will work as expected. The older ones are not designed for two-factor; but Apple should fix this via a software update (will they?).... but the work-around works.

Do not turn two-factor off because of this, just go to your iphone and get a fresh code after you type-in the password on the Apple TV and before you append two-factor code. Do this by....

(On iphone or ipad)

  • going to settings, iCloud
  • click on your iCloud ID at top of screen
  • click on "Password & Security"
  • click on "Get Verification code"

... then just type that code in the password field after your ATV password.

It works, I've done it on three older Apple TVs.

Go online log into apple site account. Security. Turn off two step verification. As i did and worked fine after apple tv reset. Problem with this is you can’t use apple cash w/o it. I don’t use it so doesn't matter. Answering two questions is better than the useless attempts to add paswood to apple tv. Won’t use it till its software is more user friendly and clear about what needs to be done.

It’s buried in this thread but if you read my post here is the solution:

Solved it on 2nd gen. my password is 14 characters long and by the time I was getting to enter The code I think it had timed out. I entered my password, got the message to enter with the six digit code and the pop up on my phone - ignored the pop up, entered my password in full then went to my phone to generate the code and entered immediately.

i Think the 6 digit code expires after 30'sexonds.

hope that helps!

One trick I leaned that worked is to log out and log back in on your computer for icloud after you have typed the ApplID and password in applTV but not submitted yet. While you are logging into your icloud you get the 2-Factor message to your phone login with the numbers on your computer then quickly add the same numbers to the end of your password in the apple TV form field and submit. and it worked for me on the first try, I was also lucky that I got some repeating digits but if your fast enough it works. Good luck!

I ran into the same problem last weekend..... grrrrrr

I first followed this:

"If you use two-factor authentication with devices running older OS versions, you might be asked to add your six-digit verification code to the end of your password when signing in. Get your verification code from a trusted device running iOS 9 or OS X El Capitan, or have it sent to your trusted phone number. Then type your password followed by the six-digit verification code directly into the password field."

I did it and IT DIDN'T WORK and it kept going back to entering my email then my password. I tried 3 times. It ****** me off (my pasword is 18 digits long and complicated).

I had to go on my IMac, turn off the two-factor authentication on my appleID, add secrets answers, and then, go back to the Apple tv and try again. It finally worked.

I'm not adding two-factor authentication until Apple finds a solution.

Frankly, Apple should have told us that two-factor authentication doesn't work on Apple tv 1.

Gundog600 is correct. To clarify, to log back into your Apple TV, you need to enter your iTunes username (email address) and password. You'll be told you can't log in, but you'll get a message on your phone/Mac saying a device is trying to log in. DO NOT CLICK 'ALLOW' YET.

Go back to the Apple TV, and re-enter your iTunes username (email address), and enter your password WITHOUT CLICKING OK.

Then go back to your computer/phone and click 'Allow'. The 6 digit code will appear. Enter the code (without the space) in the password text entry box directly following the dots representing your password, and then press 'ok'. (The password and the code go in the same box).

You should be able to log in.

It seems that the 6 digit code remains valid for a very short period, so the rationale for the steps above is to get to the point where you are ready to start typing it on the Apple TV before generating the code.

Hope this helps.

I must say this. It seems there are two possible workarounds. But apple needs to get its act together on this one.

1. Possibly append the pre-fetched two factor 6 digit code to your password. (did not work for me).

2. Log off iTunes in Settings of the Apple TV then log back on, opting to save your password. No prompt for two factor... go figure. Worked for me on my Gen 3 apple TV after I had not used it for a while.

Yes, and if you enter your password you won't have enough time to enter the 6 digit code, which is why the solution is to use your iPhone to generate the code AND THEN enter your password and the code at the same time. This solves the issue of not entering fast enough which is impossible using the non-keyboard Apple TV interface. This solution worked for me perfectly.
