Connecting Square Printer with Airport Extreme and Hotspot

Hi,

My family has a small pizza joint and I am looking to move our POS system to Square. We do not have WiFi, so I was wondering if there is a work around to use the personal hotspot feature, configure the AX to "Join a wireless network", and then connect the printer to the back of the AX to print receipts and also use the cash register. This is the POS kit from Square...

Perhaps getting WiFi would be the best solution, but I just wanted to see if this is possible. I have connected the AX to the personal hotspot, but cannot get the printer to be visible to setup within the Square dashboard app.

Any suggestion is highly appreciated.

Thank you!

Your link doesn't work for me.

You should be aware that Apple removed "join a wireless network" as an option.. it no longer works in any of the later v6 utilities.

Even if you do use it later equipment will not work..

On older equipment when it does work.. it has a nasty effect..

The airport becomes a dumb client on the network.. the ethernet ports were turned off.. so the only access was via wireless.

Nothing plugged in by ethernet will work in this setup. (USB might work though. )

Apple does allow the express to be used as a wireless bridge. It is called client mode.

You can buy any other brand wireless bridge though.. there is no reason in this situation to buy apple product.

I am not too familiar on how to set up a bridge. Would using two Airports also do this?

Thank you.

Using a pair of apple routers.. any ones.. you can setup extend wireless which works same as wireless repeater.. the ethernet ports will remain active in both units.

But the airport that is used as the main unit must be plugged by ethernet into the modem or main router.. Hotspots do not usually provide ethernet and so are useless. If you can plug by ethernet into the main router/modem.. then it should work ok.

If you need specific help with the setup we need to know all the details.. what modem / router you have?? What model airports.. and what you are doing the setup on.. mac or ipad using airport utility??

Is it possible without having WiFi in the shop?

Sure.. much better to run ethernet.. the printer specs say ethernet.

One AX would connect to the hotspot and creating a network

But as I warned you the only airport that can do this is Express..

Once you run ethernet there is no need for a second airport.. you will simply plug it in by ethernet.

Then I presume you will connect the ipad via the hotspot.. so you still need wifi somewhere..

Still not working.

I got it to work one time last night with the original setup. That being the iPad with LTE, airport express, printer, and another iPad Pro connected to the LTE network. I was able to print and open the cash drawer like normal. I disconnected everything and brought it into the shop. Reconnected, and that's where everything went wrong.

It would not connect in the Square App, despite the "Printer Connected" screen coming up. When you attempt to print, it would say the receipt has printed, but then a couple second later, a "Printer Error" message comes up. From last night to now, I have purchased a new T-Mobile hotspot, and also exchanged the Airport Express with a brand new one. Set it up the same exact way (in the shop), and it doesn't work.

I have tried many different ways of setting it up, but the main thing I noticed is that after setting up the device to "Add to an existing network", the airport will restart and then in the settings, it no longer says "add", but "join a wireless network".

Here is an imgur link with screen shots what I am talking about.

What am I doing wrong?

Thank you.

Under the hotspot configuration site, it shows...

Those values are fine.

Your previous screenshot shows a client with IP of 192.168.0.255 .. that is not a valid address.

Change it manually if you must.

I brought everything home and plugged it into my router to test the printer and cash register. They work.

I am doing something wrong with the config.

Do I plug in the printer to the back of the airport into the WAN or LAN?

I can remember going through this with someone else .. it was working fine at home but everytime they moved the setup to a business area it fouled up.

The printer should be connected to LAN port.. but let me assure you that is irrelevant to your problem.. in this mode the Express is a bridge and WAN is assigned to LAN.

I do not think some of this software is up to commercial standards. And in a business situation.. using flakey wireless to run a vital part of a business.. is simply unwise.. cable it.. and use software that can be relied on.

Ok. I will try again when I get home. Do you change it manually through airport utility, or through the T-Mobile hotspot website. I thought about doing that, and as I skimmed through both, there didn't seem to way to change that...

Yes, you are right about the flakey wireless. I suppose I wanted to test out the system with this setup first before investing into a contracted setup with the cable company. I was expecting for it to be pretty streamlined, and it actually did work at home. Don't know what's going on now.

I'll update. Thank you!

Please directly post your screenshots.. it makes it much faster.. and lots and lots of them..

This is the one you posted on imgur that I saw was wrong.

The IP of the Airport Express is fine.. 192.168.0.112 is valid address.

Notice the connection says unknown.. that might be a problem.. so tap it or roll the mouse cursor over it (depending on if you are using Airport utility on ipad or computer). I need to know what the link speed is like.

Also do the same thing for the wireless clients.. 192.168.0.255 is NOT valid. The max usable address is 192.168.0.254 .. 255 is called the broadcast address. There are floating data boxes at least in the computer version which will give you more info. eg below.. I stuck the pointer over the last client in the list and the extra box pops up. This is helpful info.

Do you change it manually through airport utility, or through the T-Mobile hotspot website.

The IP should be controlled by the Hotspot.. so you will need to check there what is failing.
