Mac Pro 1.1 Lion and new DVD burner old SuperDrive dead

TTen years later original SuperDrive is dead. Trays but won't mount or read any disk. I purchased LG burner from Mac sales. Installed it. Powered it on. Mounts disks, but I can't get it to book from it to install SL or Windows 7.

Any help is appreciated. Just spent 4 hours installing it and cleaning all the **** dust inside the case. It's currently stuck trying to read or boot SL for about 20 minutes.

Attempting everything. Removed unnecessary drives and peripherals. Booted into recover and fixed permissions. Nothing I get the missing Mac OS X folder ? After that I restart it. Left alone it won't boot on its own into either Lion or SL.

In fact without holding the Option key it won't boot into either OS. I've rest PRAM to have it boot on its own in OS X. Do I need to replace the PRAM battery on my 10 year old Mac Pro 1.1?

The two SATA ports on the Mac Pro main logic board don't work with Windows. You can connect a SATA optical drive to the PATA cable with a converter, such as:

Note: when using non-Apple optical drives with OS X, disable hard drive sleep in Energy Saver system preference.

Tthank you for your response.

I'm heading to friends house after work. I'm borrowing her Mac Pro 1.1 but hers is next up in cpu configuration. Still has her original dual SuperDrives. I'm going to try installing Windows on my SSD (solid state disk ) and bring it back to my Mac Pro.

I helped upgrade to SSD (solid state disk ) to give her Mac Pro new life. She's an independent graphics artist with family. Making her Mac Pro last a little longer helps.

I will look at the link later. Interesting.

So this is how it went.

Sip (gin and tonic)

My friends Mac Pro 1.1 with dual original super drives reads both Vista and 7 Pro just fine. Boots and begins installation. I tried installing to my SSD, but after saying it can't install until it is formatted to NTFS and I format it, it tells me it can't install to the computer or can't find the volume to install

Sip (gin and tonic)

So after trying both disks 3 times each and reseting my friends PRAM and doing some quickie repairs she requested I gave up and headed home.

Then I booted up the gin. Installed the tonic. Formatted with some lime juice and let the ice cubes install. I am going to try later with a fresh mind and perspective.

Ok I've return to trying again.

I'Ve installed Snow Leopard using the new drive and installing on 120Gb SSD (solid state disk ). It was slow but does boot from it. Not on its own I selected boot up from system preference. I've installed Photoshop Elements so I've ruled out the drive. I've held down both the C and D keys at different attempts and gotten the 'No Bootable Device.....' error message that repeated down the screen as I held those keys down and stopped when I released them.

I booted from the Leopard DVD and replaced SL and ran Bootcamp from it. Same no bootable device message again. I've installed Vista, Windows 7 Pro, and Windows 10. now I can't even get the the disk to boot let alone the installation process.

What changed? Video card and SSD (solid state disk )?

Installed Mac Pros original factory DVDs. In trying to run hardware tester nothing would happened. Also discovered the software is so old that software update cant find much of it anymore. Guessing Apple has removed it for download.

Anyway way after having no luck running hardware test I've upgraded to Leoaprd and trying to install Bootcamp Windows Vista. Boots up but gives me the same error message as before.

So I'm currently reinstalling Snow Leopard on the hard drive again. Booting from OWC LG drive wit no issues. Only with Windows DVDs.

Once I managed to get Vista installed with original SuperDrive, it failed and refused to mount any disk including the SL boot camp drivers. Nor the new drive from mac sales. Thankfully my external USB DVD drive mounts fine in Vista. Installed drivers then once everything was stable installing Windows 7 over VLists. Won't do an upgrade just a full installation. From there I can upgrade to Windows 10 again. Feel like I'm working the failing transmission on an old car. Better start saving up for a new Mac.
