Why ''original media'' has no sound?

Trying to figure out this mystery : When inside FCP, if I position cursor on a clip, it plays correctly. But if I right click and ''reveal in Finder'' then try to playback that (same) clip, in Quick Time, it plays without sound !... What's wrong ?

Not too practical as I may want to use those same clips in other programs (not only FCP....)

Is it a setting I might have set somewhere ? Just can't figure out...

Thanks,

Rob

Tom, how can I do this ? (I never had to do so with an AVCHD cam.... always had 2 versions of each clip in a separate folder...)

What are the steps ? Do I need to re-create another Library or can I change its properties ? Or much easier : can I just use something else such as : www.lifeflix.com ?

And hope to solve all these issues ?

Has nothing at all to do with the type of media. Did you trash your prefs? It reverted to the default settings.

Select the library in the browser. Look in the inspector. You will see the library properties.

Click Modify Settings to change the settings from In Library to some other location.

This is basic stuff. You really need to get some instruction on the workings of the application.

Tom,

Thanks very much. Again, never had to do this previously, and yep: possible that when I clean installed OSX 10.11 (and reinstalled everything) I might have gone ''default'' - and never had to change this stuff over a year... I agree this is certainly basics 🙂 But as a Premiere Pro user, I feel still relatively new to the FCP mindset and ways to hide basic controls...

Indeed, I now get that folder on my external drive... Still no sound under QT though.

Thanks very much, one more time 🙂

Still no sound under QT though. (Just start to wonder : would I need to do any setting in FCP for this as well? (wrap-up on my previous posts: forget the QT7 way, no way to add the ''Pro'' features or upgrade). QT 10 won't even offer a way to import from that cam. I don't see the Canon cam HV30 in Apple's list of cameras either and I have not installed any kind of driver for it... (This also makes me realize that when I import from my other (AVCHD) Sony Camera, I use the Camera Window / Plays MEmories app from SONY most of the time - the only after do I import what I need in a FCP project....

I played a little bit in the settings of the Canon camera to find anything allowing me to set DV, and anything referring to audio.. See pics below. While not necessarily done in this order, I tested a capture after each change. Now the cam shows it playback in DV, not HDV. Audio was set to 16bit, instead of 12. AV/DV set to ON instead of OFF. Audio LEvel set to ON instead of OFF. Yet, no success !!... Still playback correctly within FCP. No audio playback (just image) in Quick Time. Am I missing something ?

If the camera is not showing up, it's going to be hardware issue, cable or socket etc. double check everything.

To import from QT X click the arrow and it will show you connected devices.

An HDV camera should work fine:

Select New Movie recording from the QT X File menu, tick HDV Camera or VCR, play the recording then hit the start red button, hit again to stop.

HDV cameras will play DV just fine.

Changing camera settings will only affect NEW recording.

Ok tried it. Unfortunately, while it ''does'' record, even on screen it does show sound movement while recording, still NO SOUND in QT when playing back. Yep I raised the volume.

So recap:

- If I record through Final Cut, I get sound when playing back within FCP.

- I get NO SOUND playing back the clip (as revealed in Finder, played back with QT)

- I get no sound when recorded with QT, played back with QT.

Next step: I will try to import that media captured with QT in FCP and see (hear) if there is sound and post again....
