ipad pro 9.7 update 9.3.2 issue

Today when I tried to update my IPad with the 9.3.2 update over wifi, after downloading the update and the install started like usual. Upon rebooting, I get the Connect to iTunes screen. I connect my iPad to iTunes and try to update it, says update failed and that I need to do a restore. The restore fails (error code 56). I tried all of the fixes from the help page with no luck. Any suggestions or do I need to send off my iPad for repair?

Thanks

I used a firmware file to upgrade my replacement iPad Pro from 9.3 to 9.3.1 yesterday. Today the iPad Pro says its up-to-date and that 9.3.1 is the latest version of iOS. It looks like this happened enough that Apple had to pull 9.3.2 for this model. I'm not sure if that pull impacted other devices and availability for those devices since Apple only releases one firmware I'd say that its pulled for everyone. However I cannot confirm this.

Supposedly an iOS update will be coming out at the Worldwide Developer's Conference in June. No news un a software fix as of yet. When my iPad crashed and error 56 I took it to the Apple store and they told me sorry hardware issue, we'll have to order a replacement. No compensation for my down time to lost files, as a matter of fact they have your sign a waiver of liability for any files your had on the iPad.

update: Went to Apple store yesterday after they said they would email and call me when my new iPad came in, at 3pm I called them. Their response was oh, sorry we forgot to call. Picked up new iPad and spend 3 hours downloading update software and will spend several more recovering music and apps.

No excuse for this incompetence.

Exactly the same issue here, with a 256 GB iPad Pro 9.7. Tried the update, it froze, said I needed to restore. During the restore, the progress bar gets about 3/4 of the way through, and the status message bar says "restoring iPad firmware," and that's when it happens. Totally dead.

I chatted with Apple Support, and they determined a replacement was necessary. I am in an extremely rural area, so I was pleased when an overnight FedEx box arrived the next day (this was yesterday) and was picked up by the same FedEx truck an hour later, after I packed it. I'm hoping to have the new one, which they say will also be shipped overnight, by Monday.

But everyone is correct--how can a minor software update cause a major hardware failure?

It doesn't. The Hardware issue is already there even before the software update is applied. iOS 9.3.2 simply uses the hardware in a way that makes the issue real evident.

With or without the update that hardware component was going to cause issues sooner or later.

For everybody else, basically at this point, if you have an 9.7" iPad Pro, the best course of action is to update to determine if it has the hardware problem, and if it does, request a replacement from Apple. Apple will replace it for free, in a store or over night mail as shown above

You can of course choose not to update, and hope the hardware problem does not show itself later down the life of the iPad when a free replacement may no longer be an option.

Make sure to backup either to iCloud or iTunes before updating.

The hardware may be there if you believe the error code. I'm not sure I trust it though as I know error codes are not always accurate.

Even if we try to update and it fails and we get a new iPad - how do we know Apple has fixed the hardware issue with your replacement iPad? I'd probably guess that it hadn't been fixed if this issue is new to Apple. If it is new to Apple they should recall all product that has the faulty hardware issue now. We should have the full year of warranty to return the iPad and get a replacement if this issue shows up with later updates - which there will be. Still would like explanation from Apple on issue and if it is tied to OTA updates vs wired to iTunes and whether it is hardware or software related. I'm not updating until Apple confirms what has been going on. Hope they will be honest.
